The Arkansas Arts Center is loaning to the Laman Library works on paper that capture, for the artist and likely for the viewer as well, a feeling of the South. The exhibit, "Images from the South," opens tomorrow, Jan. 4, at the library, 2801 Orange St. in North Little Rock, and includes many works that, because they are on paper, on seldom taken out of the vault, including Romare Bearden's "Quilting Time" (1981), Judith Betts' "Mardi Gras" (1982), Carroll Cloar's "Sunday in LeFlore County," Louis Freund's "Community Life in the Ozarks" (1950), a watercolor by outsider artist Eddie Kendrick, "These Are Angels that Watch Over Us Day and Night" (c. 1991), a couple of photographs by Andrew Kilgore, "Benny Shew" from the "We Drew a Circle" portfolio and "Stephen Joseph Murphy from the "Fayetteville Townfolk" portfolio and more.

Kilgore, by the way, will be in town to give a reading Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Starving Artist's "Tales from the South" dinner and a show event ($8.90, includes fee).
