Jan Parker: Art that grows on you

Fayetteville Underground kicks off the town's first First Thursday of 2011 tonight with four exhibits, including Chicagoan Jan Parker's "Oppression, Suppression, Detachment, Growth," photographic documentation of her installations placing personal objects near kudzu. Her statement:

In this work, I use outdoor kudzu growth with personal objects related to my family. Both the kudzu and objects are saturated with meaning. Together, given time in their environment, they conveyed a metaphorical narrative of family dysfunction, abuse, and growth. With photographic documentation, and the re-installation of the objects coupled with the skeletal form kudzu takes in the winter, my exhibition illustrates and exposes what underlies family dysfunction and the dichotomy of growth. I dedicate this study to my beloved Mother.

Also showing: Adam Campbell drawings ("The End of Isolation"), Carl Berman paintings (presented by his widow and curated by Hank Kaminsky), and Susy Siegele and Mike Haley porcelain.

The event is 5-8 p.m. at 1 E. Center St. FU is open noon to 7 p.m. Wed.-Fri. and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sat.
