Not a great start for Kris Allen’s burgeoning career as a pop star. His debut sold 80,000 copies in its first week, the lowest first-week number ever by an “American Idol” winner. In a crowded week of releases, Allen’s self-titled album failed to even crack the top 10 in the Billboard 200. He finished behind albums by the likes of John Mayer, Andrea Boccelli, 50 Cent and Justin Bieber, that 15-year-old beat-boxing kid.

A Jive spokesman told Entertainment Weekly that the label isn’t panicking.

“We 150 percent believe in the Kris Allen record, and the indicators of radio growth and digital single sales prove we’re correct.”
