Best known as the composer and voice behind “Schoolhouse Rock,” jazz practitioner and cult musician Bob Dorough is returning to his homestate to play his first Little Rock show in several years this Monday, April 18, at The Afterthought.

The Cherry Hill-born pianist and vocalist who filled the role of geeky-cool jazz kid better than anyone since, is also a former collaborator of a number of huge names, including Miles Davis, Allen Ginsberg and (one of this writer’s biggest musical crushes ever) Blossom Dearie.

Oh—and he also released two of the best, most charming jazz albums ever in his debut, “Devil May Care,” and its follow-up, “Just About Everything,” both of which showed extraordinarily well in last year’s Arkansas Music Poll.

Dorough will be joined by spectacular Afterthought regulars Joe Vick (bass) and Dave Rogers (drums) for the one-night stand.

And here’s a great article on Dorough, courtesy of Stephen Koch, from the Times’ digivaults.
