The Hidden Rex is a three-piece that reminds me of some of the great SST Records trios of the ’80s, sometimes even within the same song. “Seethe” simultaneously recalls moments from the first Dinosaur Jr. album and the slightly off-key charm and weirdness of the Meat Puppets circa “II.” The group’s geeky, cheeky covers of mainstream hits (Cher, Nelly, Ludacris, Danzig) echo The Minutemen’s irreverent homages. Of course, it’ll be all original songs from The Hidden Rex come Thursday.
