I'm headed to Nashville tomorrow morning and will be out of pocket for a few days, so here's a quick round-up of some good Little Rock music released so far this week. It's been a productive couple of days (also note the new stuff I posted Monday from BLACK PARTY and Pepperboy).

1. The Casual Pleasures - "Phony Eyes"

I don't know much about these guys but they share some members with Ezra Lbs and Groovecluster, are playing at Pizza D's in August, and just released this song, which is kinda great, all post-punk energy and Casio riffs.

2. Fresco Grey - "Perfectionist (B Side)"

Fresco Grey is one of the better beatmakers in the city, and his emergence as a good rapper is just another step in the Young Gods of America takeover. Here he talks about "Kill Bill" and "Aladdin" and Ask Jeeves and Mannie Fresh, and in stylish black & white.

3. Saeuce Millz  ft. Zo Brad - "Swag N My Bag"

Saeuce Millz has been on my radar since his song "Remain" a few months ago. This new track just appeared this afternoon but it's pretty great too — just a real neurotic, oddly playful wall-of-sound.

    July 17, 2014

  • New music from Bonnie Montgomery, 'Black County'

    July 17, 2014
Bonnie Montgomery, who you may recognize either as the composer of that Bill Clinton opera a few years ago (covered by the New Yorker) or as a beloved local country singer-songwriter (she's released two EPs, "Cruel" and "Joy," via Fast Weapons Records), has finished a full-length self-titled album and it's due out July 29. /more/
  • This Week in Music (7/16 Tom Cotton Class Warfare Edition)

    July 16, 2014
Reggie Gold is another member of the local Young Gods of America collective worth paying attention to — this song appeared two days ago and has a weird, eerie Danny Elfman energy. He's also really great at Twitter, where he says things like, "i have flashbacks of ancient memories all through out the day..they be of the most vivid dreams." /more/
  • New video from Lo Thraxx, 'Royale With Cheese'

    July 15, 2014
We can all breathe easier knowing Lo Thraxx has a new mixtape on the way, the very well titled "$harkansas: The Cool Wave," and here is a kind of single, featuring a "Pulp Fiction" sample and lines like "I am Arkansas." /more/
  • Lucero to release two-hour live album in August

    July 8, 2014
Lucero, the beloved Memphis alt-country band fronted by Little Rock native Ben Nichols, will release their first-ever live album, "Live from Atlanta" on August 12. The album was recorded over three nights at Atlanta's Terminal West last November, and will be 2 CDs ($15) or 4 LPs ($34.99) with 32 songs, a "massive, career-spanning ... greatest hits collection," in their words. At two hours long, the goal was to simulate the real thing. You can pre-order the record now at their site. /more/
  • New music from BLACK PARTY, 'Falling'

    July 7, 2014
One of the Times' most anticipated releases of the fall is "V O I D," the new tape by Malik Flint, aka BLACK PARTY, which is due out on August 14th. Here's the first official single, "Falling," which finds him getting all morose and bleakly honest over a self-produced beat that samples James Blake. /more/
  • New mixtape from Pepperboy and S. Ray, 'Hard 2 Cope'

    July 7, 2014
Here is some more good and weird Little Rock rap from Pepperboy, who uses his new tape, "Hard 2 Cope," as an outlet to introduce S. Ray, just as he did last year with Yung Envy (what happened to Yung Envy?). /more/
  • New mixtape from Young Freq, 'Perfection Before Profit'

    July 1, 2014
"Perfection Before Profit," the blockbuster new mixtape from Little Rock's Young Freq, opens with a sample of then-Pulaski County Coroner Steve Nawojczyk from "Bangin' In Little Rock." /more/
  • New video from Cool Chris, 'OGxPurp'

    June 30, 2014
Here's a good, mellow video to start your week off with, the latest from Cool Chris, who is a lonesome soul. The beat is by North Little Rock native and brilliant person IAmNawf and the clip was apparently shot by fellow beatmaker Fresco Grey. If you missed "Trap Conversations," Chris' tape from back in April, now is your chance to catch up. /more/
  • New music from Pallbearer, 'The Ghost I Used To Be'

    June 27, 2014
Here's the first single, "The Ghost I Used To Be," from Pallbearer's forthcoming album, "Foundations Of Burden," recorded in Portland with producer Billy Anderson (Swans, Eyehategod, Sleep, Neurosis, Red House Painters) and due out August 19 via Profound Lore. /more/
