I'm headed to Nashville tomorrow morning and will be out of pocket for a few days, so here's a quick round-up of some good Little Rock music released so far this week. It's been a productive couple of days (also note the new stuff I posted Monday from BLACK PARTY and Pepperboy).

1. The Casual Pleasures - "Phony Eyes"

I don't know much about these guys but they share some members with Ezra Lbs and Groovecluster, are playing at Pizza D's in August, and just released this song, which is kinda great, all post-punk energy and Casio riffs.

2. Fresco Grey - "Perfectionist (B Side)"

Fresco Grey is one of the better beatmakers in the city, and his emergence as a good rapper is just another step in the Young Gods of America takeover. Here he talks about "Kill Bill" and "Aladdin" and Ask Jeeves and Mannie Fresh, and in stylish black & white.

3. Saeuce Millz  ft. Zo Brad - "Swag N My Bag"

Saeuce Millz has been on my radar since his song "Remain" a few months ago. This new track just appeared this afternoon but it's pretty great too — just a real neurotic, oddly playful wall-of-sound.

  • Forever Charlie: Charlie Wilson live at Verizon Arena

    June 1, 2015
Charlie Wilson, one of the greatest R&B artists of all time, came to Verizon Arena last Friday night and performed for a near-sold-out crowd as part of his Forever Charlie Tour with special guests Joe and Kem. Joe opened the show, Kem followed with a great set, and Charlie rocked the house. If you missed it, you missed out on something wonderful. /more/
  • New music from Teenagers, DMP, Liquid Skulls, Yuni Wa and more

    May 29, 2015
Here's something new from Fayetteville band Teenagers' new EP "Wheezin' The Juice." I'd love to say something sharp and coherent about it, but nothing comes to mind. To free associate instead: San Diego, Rickenbacker, The Strokes, Capri Sun, longboards, mezcal. /more/
  • New music from The Uh Huhs, Country Florist, The Wandering Lake, Osyrus Bolly and more

    May 20, 2015
I'm late to this, but Osyrus Bolly and producer Manic the 17th teamed up on this track from Manic's compilation "T.I.M.E." "My words are like nature sounds," Bolly says, also calling himself the "young Malcolm X" and taking shots at Tyler Perry. /more/
  • Kanis Bash 2015 and a Q&A with Black Horse

    May 18, 2015
Kanis Bash is an annual fundraiser for Little Rock's Kanis Skate Park, featuring live music, art, merch, skateboarders and food. It started six years ago when finances became tight for a group of locals that had been volunteering their own money, time and services to maintain the free DIY community skate park. This year’s Bash attracted skaters, artists and fans from over a dozen states. /more/
  • New video from Swampbird, 'Matter of Time'

    May 18, 2015
The latest from Little Rock alt-country band Swampbird is "Matter of Time," off their album "Something To See." The video was shot in Nashville and stars Aubrey Peeples, from the TV show "Nashville" (also: "Sharknado"), and is, according to the band, the second part of a trilogy of videos directed by Conway native Chris Jones, which will collectively form a short film to be released later this year. /more/
  • North Little Rock cop highlighted by Killer Mike on CNN

    May 7, 2015
Atlanta rapper Killer Mike appeared as a guest on CNN yesterday and held up North Little Rock police officer Tommy Norman (who he discovered on Instagram) as an ideal example of how officers can involve themselves positively in their respective communities. Norman appears in the segment as well to explain his approach and comment on recent events. /more/
  • A Wizard, A True Star: Todd Rundgren in Little Rock

    April 28, 2015
Music legend Todd Rundgren released his 25th solo studio album "Global" earlier this month, and spent a few days in Little Rock in support of its release. On Saturday, April 18, I headed out to Arkansas Record and CD Exchange in North Little Rock for Record Store Day. They had food trucks, free merch and a special guest appearance by Rundgren himself. A steady line of Rundgren fans shuffled in line for over 3 hours getting an autograph and photo op. He even stayed an extra hour — missing lunch, apparently — to continue to signing autographs as his wife, Michele, offered to take pics with people's cameras. /more/
  • New video from Goon des Garcons, 'SHITONYOU'

    April 28, 2015
I'm been out of town for a week and have a lot to catch up on, but here's a quick endorsement for Little Rock rapper Goon des Garcons' new video, for "SHIT ON YOU," the opening track from his latest mixtape, "YOUNG DIRTY BASTARD." /more/
  • Help Knox Hamilton replace their stolen gear

    April 16, 2015
Over the weekend, Little Rock indie pop band Knox Hamilton played a show in Portland, and on their way out town, while they'd stopped to "take in the sights" at Multinomah Falls, the band's van was robbed. They lost four guitars, a bass, and various other equipment and valuables (including cash, phone chargers, passports and a guitar strap hand-made by one of the band member's mothers!) that they'll undoubtedly need to continue their tour — their next show is scheduled for April 25. The band has a GoFundMe campaign set up for fans to help out. /more/
  • New music from Tral Wayz, The See, Big Piph, headcold and more

    April 14, 2015
More great stuff from Fayetteville label Let's Talk Figures. This is from an excellent new EP by production duo TAPE.SET, a.k.a. Hutch Landfair and Andrew McClain. It's the ideal soundtrack for a bike ride on the International Space Station, or for dying on the beach. /more/

Sims Bar-B-Q — Why had I gone so many years without a visit? How could I forget that spare ribs are richer than back ribs and infinitely better when they have a good bark-like finish and Sims' nonpareil mustard-based sauce, augmented by a healthy squirt of the incendiary house hot sauce (you have to ask). The slaw is fresh. The potato salad, too. And don't forget greens unless you are a vegetarian. Yes, I said unless you are a vegetarian. The pigmeat quotient is high. Don't forget the 40's. Budweiser. None of that craft crapola here. Dinner and plenty of beer for six ran $75. Recommended. — Max Brantley
