To celebrate his birthday yesterday, Little Rock's Pepperboy
released a new EP which, like his last tape, "3 Volleys,"
is largely war-themed. This time, though, it's a period piece. Off the top of my head, I can't think of another rap mixtape that has ever focused on WWII, because why would they? There was GZA on "Liquid Swords" saying, "I throw raps that attack like the Japs on Pearl Harbor," but that was a throwaway line. Pepperboy takes the metaphor and runs with it.
"The Pacific" takes on Pearl Harbor and the centerpiece, "Lost Soulja," is some kind of strange epic: "Time to feed, I got some cold rice. Gave a kid my apple, the village people nice. That's the only love, the jungle full of snakes, a mosquito bite could lead to your fate." It's like method acting.
