Anyone responsible enough to have ever felt the frustration of realizing you're probably too drunk to safely drive home will appreciate this: a new company is coming to Little Rock that will offer cheap chauffeur and take-home services for those stuck out after having too much to drink. Still better: They'll bring your car home, too. Better still: they're hiring!
According to a press release, BeMyDD is a chain with outlets in 42 cities. The company offers two forms of drunk-transpo: a personal driver service for $15 per hour, and a pickup service for $25 (plus mileage) in which two drivers are dispatched, one to take your drunk ass home, and another to follow in your car so it doesn't get stripped and melted for scrap metal in the middle of the night by opportunistic thieves. They also plan to offer medical, business, and elder transport
The company is currently looking to hire 100 part-time drivers for the new office they plan to start in central Arkansas. Applicants have to pass a background check and have a valid license. According to the BeMyDD website, employees will be able to set their own schedule, pick the zip codes they're willing to drive to, and will work "professionally dressed" (fingers crossed for bunny suits, which will make the ride home extra entertaining). The company will be conducting interviews at the end of February. You can apply here.
Lots better than a ride from the boys in blue. Cheaper, too.
Back in 2009, Discovery night club owner Norman Jonestold the Times that, "anything I've got is for sale to the right person at the right price." It looks like the right person was Phillip Patten, owner of the North Little Rock bar Sidetracks, who purchased 610 Center and Pulse/Off Center from Jones in the fall. No word on the price, but manager Todd Chambers detailed some of the things that have changed and some that will stay the same.
610 Center is now officially SixTen Center Street Bar, and Pulse is Miss Kitty's/Saloon. Sidetracks is now known as Trax.
Chambers said Miss Kitty’s has a "rustic country décor going on. It’a a work in progress." He added that the club would be opening up to live bands. "We’re also going to do karaoke starting this year and some other theatrical acts. And it’s still going to be a dance and socializing bar, too," he said.
Miss Kitty's and Saloon — both under the same roof at 307 W. 7th St. — will also be rented out for private events and fundraisers. All of the bars will remain gay friendly and gay-owned and operated, but open to all, Chambers said.
As for whether he might be considering the sale of Discovery, Jones chuckled and quipped, "like I said before..."
15 characters played by a cast of three at Radio Music Theater
In April, Vicky and Steve Farrell plan to open The Joint, a comedy/rock club cum coffeehouse/bar, in that gaping storefront on Argenta's Main Street. The Farrell's are new to Little Rock, but they're no strangers to comedy or theater. They met in the mid-70's, as college theater geeks, performing in a summer show on a Mississippi Riverboat. They married and acted in conventional plays in Minneapolis before launching two comedy ventures in Houston,Texas. The first of those, The Comedy Workshop, hosted national acts such as Rodney Dangerfield and Robin Williams.
Their North Little Rock venue will borrow from their second Houston venture, Radio Music Theater, a conceptual approach to two act plays, involving a cast of three tackling 20 or more characters. On weekends, The Joint's large stage will host similarly structured plays riffing on local politics and other topics. But the coffee/comedy fusion is new to the Farrells, and they're branching out in other ways, too. They plan to have a small stage and a permanent piano in the coffee shop, which will open early and close late, serving wine and beer at night. The space seats up to 30 and will host open mics and informal music. The large stage, in a room which can accommodate 120, will host Wednesday night improv and Thursday night local and national music acts.

Tomorrow, The Underground Pub, the 12-year-old bar and venue underneath Bosco's in the River Market, celebrates its grand reopening following a makeover.
Much has changed, according to owner Scott Harris. For one, it's dropped all thing British pub, including the word "pub" in it's name; now it's simply, The Underground. No more British pub food either. The menu is now solely the burgers and fried food variety of bar grub and only available for dinner, daily. The new look of the bar is dive-y, Harris said. The interior is all black, 4,000 Christmas lights are hanging from the ceiling and Prohibition-themed decor lines the walls.
"If Deep and Midtown had a baby, this is what it would look like," Harris said.
On the music front, Harris said he's planning on hosting less dance-y pop and more harder rock from local bands on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and possibly Tuesday night in the near future.
The Pacifiers perform on Friday at the reopening party.
