When President Obama signed NDAA 2012, he failed to defend and protect the Constitution and thus repudiated his oath of office.

Re: “James Lee Witt endorses Mike Ross for governor

I used to think James Lee Witt had good sense, but I guess senility or time erodes us all.

Re: “New study finds no water contamination by fracking in Arkansas

If the intelligence quotient of Republican Senators and Representatives proceeds at the current pace, the value of Pi will be set to 3.0 by legislative fiat within a decade. Widely known as the Inhofe constant, the constant is adopted because it is an easier constant to remember. A few will protest and use the simple 22/7 approximation, but they won't matter and wither due to lack of congressional or conservative funding for their research.

Re: “The IRS' Tea Party blunder

I rather surprised that no one has mentioned one other probable scenario about why the IRS targeted groups using the names “tea party” and “patriot” as search terms. IRS managers and auditors are pretty sensitive and defensive about their jobs and how they perform them . . . especially since they traditionally receive negative comments from far left and far right and all gradients between. The one thing they do that all parties praise them for is aggressively going after tax protesters and tax scofflaws.

So why wouldn't a mid-to-upper level manager target groups with names that correlate to tax revolt, tax protests, and historical tax scofflaw actions as potentially suspicious and necessary for increased scrutiny to prevent those protesting by non-payment or avoidance to not pay their fair share. And why would the manager(s) think it necessary to inform a Commissioner that the auditors and managers were concentrating on classes or groups suspected of having potential to not pay or avoid their taxes? Isn't that what they are hired to do?

I don't think using the IRS for political punishment or threat is acceptable, but it has happened in Republican and Democratic administrations since the income tax began and the Service certainly tortures all of us to an extent. However, in this situation there may be some reasonable doubt about an executive branch criminal conspiracy unlike the Johnson and Nixon enemies targeting, etc.

Re: “University of Arkansas Board to discuss tuition increases for 2013-14

I enrolled at the University of Arkansas for 16 semester hours in September 1965. The first semester tuition, including all student fees, was $100 ($740.14 in 2013 dollars). My semester textbooks, all purchased new at the Student Union with my family, were less than $100. That is exclusive of room and board which was paid separately.

In forty-eight years, that appears to be a 7,818% increase or and average of over 162% each year since 1965. Someone can check my math, but since, to my personal knowledge, tuition was raised to $250 ($1,677.85 in 2013 dollars) in fall 1968. It appears a large portion of the increases occur in later years.

Re: “Welcome Sen. Elizabeth Warren

I agree Gylippus with your last post, but you keep on trying and trying.

And just for you, one type of loans are made to avoid disaster caused by greed and jettisoning regulations like Glass-Steagall because they were "too confining and difficult for the finance industry" after preventing disasters for over 79 years. The other type of loan would be to build an improved future with a larger pool of college-educated citizens and their contributions which would also include larger tax base.

And we understand you only comprehend the right's reasoning for subsidizing and deregulating the bubble-creating current rich.

Re: “The worst Mother's Day gifts

Sorry for your loss, NVR. Enjoy the special day, Sunday and your memories of her. I feel certain both of our mothers will be enjoying our thoughts and reminiscences of them and their lives.

Re: “Doctor who shot at car after Arvest robbery gets deal

And it is a good lesson for all of us innocent bystanders also, Steven E. To remember that with all the proliferation of CCW permits we have to drop and try to take cover not only from the armed criminal perpetrators trying to get away but, also the CCW holders anxious to play John Wayne or Dirty Harry and spraying 'legal' gunfire at the perpetrators, whether we want their ('heroic' to you, 'idiotic' to me) assistance or not.

Oh, and to take cover from the frightened police officers present, who may be returning fire of both the CCW and perpetrators because they can't identify which is which.

The unarmed citizens and CCW holder were lucky, this time, but some time soon an innocent bystander or CCW holder will bleed or die and whether from friendly or unfriendly or mistaken fire will not alleviate the tragedy one little bit.

More guns => more guns in the hands of people => more gunfire in crimes and arguments => less safety and more wounded and dead
