Just back from a long vacation, I don't feel my usual dislocation. Internet connections were sketchy, but I read the Arkansas Times and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and stayed up with e-mail.

Re: “Fix one highway bottleneck, create another

I always think when the ATHD speaks that they are a little disingenuous. They told the University Park neighborhood three or four months ago that the grassy barrier that faces north overlooking the old Sears store was too noisy and that they were going to build a large concrete wall to diffuse the sound.

Re: “Cotton, Westerman, Boozman: Suffer children

Let me add a story. Since I blew out both shoulders I have to use one of the neighborhood yard guys to do my 60-80 foot hedge. Last summer when doing the yard he stopped by to pick up a check and introduced me to an old man with him. From Guatemala with a daughter and grandkids here so he comes 2-3 times a year. Pretty dire talk insued saying kids now in that country become gang members/dope runners or hookers. Or you are killed.

Fast forward. My #2 sis in law just retired from LRSD. She now helps out tutoring at Hall High a couple of days a week as do many alums since it's on the failing list. One that she tutors is a young lady from Guatemala that was brutally raped at age 12 and the family moved here, she had her baby and now mother has passed away from cancer. Talk about the deck stacked against you! My sis always has to take snacks so she has a full stomach to study on. Going from Guatemala to a school that bills itself English As a Second Language is no small accomplishment.

Now as Max says, these people are from South America. Do you think for a minute these kids want to go out and cause a disturbance? Get real! They want to get to family and safety. I hope these gentleman think for just one moment how violent that rape was for that 12 year old and do they by chance have a daughter or granddaughter that age?

Re: “Thanksgiving eve open line

DBI - I'll take the flip side. We were at the U of A at the same time and my kids are the same age as yours although I have two boys. We will forgo cooking tomorrow like you and head to a cousins. Hopefully the boys and all the significant others will be here for Christmas. I will miss the cooking but I'm so very thankful for raising two great kids like you and mag have done. I think mine are kinda like yours, they will make a difference some day. Enjoy your meal tomorrow but give thanks to your two great kids, I will.
