Re: “Gus's Fried Chicken lives up to the hype

Since the thread is about Gus's *chicken*, I'll first say that I can't wait to try it. Sounds great. And, I'll no doubt order the fried pickles. That's what I really wanted to talk about. I first had "fried dill pickles" at the (late) Loner Drive-In, in Atkins, Ark. in the early '70s. That was my grandmother's hometown, and in those days there were no other "eating places" except the cafe downtown. No Sonic, McDonald's, pizza parlors, etc. Others may disagree, and they could be right, but I've always believed that retail fried pickles originated at the Loner. Theirs weren't spears (as in long quarters), but they weren't chips, either. They were batter-dipped long slices...thinner than what Gus's is apparently turning out. My first thought is that these spears would be too dense for my taste, but who knows? I look forward to trying them. And the chicken. Never had Gus's anywhere.

Re: “Food Feedback Friday: midnight snack edition

Please don't tell Sami Lal at Star of India, but I tried Curry in a Hurry for the first time last week. I got one of those online daily deal thingies...$18 for 3 six dollar lunch buffet vouchers, which include a drink, but not an 18% gratuity added.

I was not displeased with Curry in a Hurry, after all it was cheap, but it was also fairly good. It's a smaller scale buffet than Star or Taj Mahal, thus there are fewer choices. The Tandoori chicken was the only thing that really disappointed. The flavor was not great to begin with, but I believe it was made from ground chicken or something like that. Definitely not the chicken on the bone I prefer. All in all, I like this place less than the other two, but I still had a descent experience.

A mistake was made with the voucher, though. The deal includes "one specialty drink per voucher". I told the proprietor that I didn't need a drink besides water. He reminded me that a drink was included in the deal, so I said, sure, I'll have some tea. He ended up charging me for the drink, plus the gratuity. I didn't bat an eye, feeling that 3 bucks was still a good deal for a buffet. Of course, I just wasn't thinking about the price of the voucher I had already paid on line. I still have two vouchers, so I'll point out the mistake next time. I don't think the guy was trying to pull a fast one.

Without the vouchers, I honestly don't see myself driving to this neighborhood and picking Curry in a Hurry over Taj Majal.

Re: “Stop the presses: Cordell's potato and chicken salads are back

I love stories like this (couldn't be better's, as well as the original post). I've lived in LR most of my life, and know only a fraction of this kind of lore. I do remember the Kroger at Park Plaza, but I don't remember the original Hillcrest Kroger, nor the drug store mentioned.

There needs to be a manageable repository for stuff like this!

Re: “Food Feedback Friday: dumplings, buns, and benedicts

I had my first go at a sandwich at Hillcrest Artisan Meats this past Saturday. (I had just heard part of Mary Twedt's Arkansas Cooks interview on the radio, and was out and about.) I had a fine, brick-pressed Prosciutto and cheese sandwich on a nice roll with greens, tomato, red onion, and (I believe) aioli. Perfection. The folks are super-nice, and they have some interesting stuff in there. I'll definitely go back...not just for sandwiches, but I want to try some of the other creations. Love this place.

Re: “Get tickets now for Heritage Hog Roast May 4

I like those fatty parts, too. After smoking pork shoulders, I finish them off in a hot oven to assure some crispy things.

Here's some info on Falling Sky Farm's meat share program:

Sounds kind of interesting.
