Cutting the special education department seems particularly cruel, considering how many students in LRSD are in special education. The end of the year is always extremely busy as preparations are made for these students for the following year. It takes many people to handle all the federal and state requirements of special education and taking away staff who understand special education is not wise.
It's also especially disturbing to know that many staff who received letters are hard workers doing the best they can with limited resources, but no one bothered to dig a little deeper. Maybe if they had, they would know that the treatment of special education by past superintendents plays a large roll in the problems that are lingering.
A friend & I had lunch there about two months ago. We both had gumbo, which we thought was good, but the serving was small. Very small. We commented on this to our server, thinking that maybe there's another size option, such as a bowl rather than a cup (& our server was very friendly, did a good job). Nope--that size was it. She said they wanted to know things like this as the owners may still need to tweak the menu.
For what we paid, it did not seem like enough food for lunch--more like an appetizer size. Haven't gone back b/c I can't pay those prices for lunch & be hungry the rest of the day. I'm disappointed as well b/c I'd really like some good Cajun/Louisiana type food up here.
I just love how Sec. Of Religion Martin says there were no complaints. Who would we complain to??? Anyone watching AR politics these past few years has seen multiple republicans commit multiple ethical (if not illegal) violations & they are never disciplined for it. We all know there is no one in our state government who seems to be able to rein in these right-winger, evangelical types. Now, I realize that they all run in the same pretend-Christian circles so they don't see a thing wrong with this.
I complained & told the story on the AR Blog b/c I knew it was the only place where others would understand and care. Arkansas has to got to do better in our next election. The fundy's have got to go.
Rick, you really did not miss much with the sermon, but the fireworks & lights were lovely. It helped that the weather was nice as well; cold but not bitterly so. I was really bothered by the religion pushed on us tonight, but who is there to complain to? As we've seen over & over again, the Republicans in this state get a free pass on most everything.
For anyone who couldn't make it to the Capitol lighting ceremony tonight, the music, lights, & fireworks were wonderful! Judge Reinhold was the MC & did a good job too! The not-so-great part was Sec. Of State Martin having an evangelical-type preacher there who gave an opening prayer. It had to have lasted 5 minutes or more & was really a sermon. Wow, nothing like cramming your own brand of religion down everyone's throats at the state Capitol.:(
Although I am a Christian, I am what might be considered "liberal" in this red state of ours--I actually believe in the separation of church & state. I can't speak for the others in attendance tonight, but I can say I was not the only person who was done with Bro. Pastor's prayer after the first minute. Everywhere I looked, people were talking quietly amongst themselves. He may have not converted many souls tonight...Our state has got to do better next time with who we elect.
It's just so pathetic to watch certain people in our state vilify our public schools, all the while supporting charters, no matter what. Many charters in Central AR don't have stellar academic records, yet they are allowed to remain open. Have any of these charter schools brought new & innovative ideas in education that can be replicated in other schools? Funny how that was supposed to be one of the reasons for having them, but it sure didn't work out that way.
As for this particular charter, I would guess we'll not hear a peep from our State Board about this.
Surely this should be a deep concern to the State Board of Education? Oh, silly me...they don't care what charter schools do.
