Former State Senator Bobby Glover's son.
Mayor-elect Smith can thank the 1981 General Assembly and Arkansas' dubious racial history.
As pointed out in a recent Times article by Grif Stockely, in 1980 a black candidate was elected mayor of 66% white West Helena in a six person race. The winning candidate, Leo Chitman, only garnered 16 percent of the vote. The legislature quickly passed a law requiring run-offs in all local and county races if the winning candidate gets less than 50% (Steele had 48.2%). The law makes it harder for a black candidate to win a head-to-head matchup with a white candidate (in most areas).
North Little Rock...as pointed out above...is 62% white. Steele lost with 45% of the runoff vote.
Not in any way condoning drinking and driving, but Rule's son just had surgery on a brain tumor and is about to undergo chemo. Survival statistics are not good. Lots of personal and professional pressure on this guy.
It's all a shell game. If President Obama were serious in his conviction he would have said something BEFORE the NC election. His hands and lips are moving fast but keep your eye on the real issue. It's still the economy...and it is still a loser for the President, so he is successfully working to change the subject.
In 2008 a McCain supporter said a "B" was carved into her face by supporters of Barack Obama. Turns out she did it to herself. I'm not saying dude killed his own cat, but nobody thought a woman would carve a "B" into her face either. Anything is possible in politics.
Brett Cummins is a very good meteorologist. But high paid TV talent usually have moral or character clauses in their contracts. Basically they say if you embarrass us...you are gone. Homosexuality is not the issue. KARK management surely knew Cummins was gay and either didn't care or valued his ability more than his lifestyle. What really threatens Cummins' future at Channel 4 is the allegation of drug use. If a drug test shows levels of illegal drugs in his system...bye bye. Waking up next to a dead man in a jacuzzi is horrible...but might not have been sufficient to fire him. But who will trust a forecast delivered by a known drug user? Credibility is king in meteorology. Lose it...and you lose your job. Hopefully Brett is being watched very closely at this time by people who love him.
Re: “Procastinators' day at the Legislature OPEN LINE”
Given Arkansas' checkered racial past, this will be interesting: SB 812 seeks to lower the requirements for the director of the Dept. of Higher Ed (so that a white man can get the job) while SB 1182 seeks to raise the qualifications for the director of the Dept. of Career Education (so that the black man who currently holds the job would be disqualified).
