  • Dying Arkansas firefighter fights to collect stalled pension

Though he risked his life battling hundreds of blazes and Haz-Mat spills during his 24 years as a firefighter with the Springdale Fire Department, Capt. Harold "Bud" Planchon is in the biggest fight of his life right now, battling terminal colorectal cancer that has spread to his liver.

Re: “Dying Arkansas firefighter fights to collect stalled pension

That flash drive, by the way, included a fair rendition of all communications between us and LOPFI, my husband's medical reports, numerous doctor's notes, and LOPFI's clearly designed delay tactics. We are an open book, Arkansas Citizen. Though I suspect you have already seen all the documents, all you have to is ask. LOPFI is starving those it is supposed to serve and that includes my family. LOPFI or its directors are a disgrace! This is written by Mrs. Bud Planchon (Jane)

"Arkansas Citizen" must be either David Clark or a municipal league member. This journalist, God bless him, was given a flash drive by me when I went to the LOPFI "quarterly hearing" at which I requested, some weeks prior, to be heard. Mr. Clark, who is truly the most unsympathetic person with whom I have ever spoken, said, and I quote: You absolutely WILL not be recognized." Once at the hearing at which I could not speak, (my husband was too ill to attend), these people treated me like lint on the shirt...only difference being you have to look at lint. Law, my ass. I am about to teach them some law.

We do want to thank the National Union who has helped us immensely...state and local not so much.

Re: “Dying Arkansas firefighter fights to collect stalled pension

It's a damn shame that the local and state

union, who has done so little to help us personally, would now (at this late date) step forward to ride the cancer-soaked coat-tails of my husband. Where have you been prior to now? Ditto to the City of Springdale who knew but did nothing to ventilate those houses....Where are you now, Mayor Sprouse?

Re: “Dying Arkansas firefighter fights to collect stalled pension

Mr. Koon,

Thank you so much for covering this news story and bringing to light what LOPFI is causing us to endure. Mr. David Clark makes over $167,000 a year, so perhaps he could agree to cut his own overpaid salary so my husband gets that $ 3,800 a month in retirement pay he earned. We are so thankful that you had the courage and fortitude to cover this story. Many thanks from the Planchon family!
