The state Board of Education has cleared the way for Baker Kurrus to be named the new superintendent of the Little Rock School District, voting to waive hiring requirements for a district administrator. The board voted 7-0 in a special meeting this afternoon. One board member, Joe Black, was not present; chairman Sam Ledbetter did not vote. The board will hire the new superintendent tomorrow.
Federal Judge James Moody this morning sentenced Lu Hardin, the former president of the University of Central Arkansas, to five years probation for his guilty plea to wire fraud and money laundering. He declined to impose a 9- to 12-month sentence recommended by federal court sentencing guidelines.
