The United States Highway Trust Fund is a transportation fund which receives money from a federal fuel tax of 18.4 cents per gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon of diesel fuel and related excise taxes.[1] It currently has three accounts, the Highway Account which funds road construction, a smaller 'Mass Transit Account' which supports mass transit and also a 'Leaking Underground Storage Tank Trust Fund'.
How much does the trucking industry pay to operate on our roads?
Estimates of 21.4 billions dollars is produced annually and paid by the trucking industry.
The Fund receives hypothocated tax revenues derived from excise taxes on highway motor fuel and truck related taxes on truck tires, sales of trucks and trailers, and heavy vehicle use. Money goes to the general treasury but is then credited to the fund
Much of this is paid by individual Owner Operators, small business owners, who are already struggling with high fuel prices and increased government regulations and mandates.
The problem isn't that the industry doesn't PAY ENOUGH, the problem is the funds are not used for what they were intended for.
SPEND SPEND SPEND!!
It wasn't until this year that drivers finally received funding for more safe truck parking. It took how many drivers being killed to get this? Not enough truck parking causes drivers to continue driving, even if they are tired or over their allowed hours to drive. Many would have to park on ramps or in deserted areas, as Jason Rivenburg did, and was then shot and killed for a total of $7.00. He Left a Wife pregnant with twins and a 2 year old son.
