@Citizen1 ... The FBI guys and girls did not just show up on Saturday and say let's go arrest Ms. Martha. You are right in that there must be some plan behind the extra holding time. A few days or even hours in jail can make a person do things like plea bargain, confess, narc on others.... Bet the news on Monday afternoon will be interesting.

@Ms. Taylor .... Thank You for writing. Every story needs some balance. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

@Drew .... Does anyone even listen to him now or ever. I think an endorsement from him says volumes.

      I hate to bash what is clearly a local favorite, but after multiple people telling us that we had to eat at the Greek Food Festival, I picked up gyros and greek salad at the drive through yesterday, and was extremely disappointed, especially at $7 a gyros and $7 for the salad.

The gyros were dried out and small, the size of a small taco. The pita was so overwarmed, it was crunchy. And the greek salad was mostly iceberg lettuce mix that costs $.99 at the local grocery store. There was practically no flavor in anything. Definitely the worst $30 I've spent on food in a long time. Everyone in my family wished we'd just gone to Layla's instead, where for less than $5, we always get way overstuffed gyros sandwiches, and for less than $7, a greek salad that is the real thing.

      Well good to see that the Lynch & Convicting crowd is hard at work on a Sunday. Yep, an accusation has been made, so let's go ahead and tar & feather her right?

* Let's forget about due process.

* Let's forget about innocent until proven (in a court of law) guilty.

* Let's forget if she is guilty, there's due process.

No like the decadent ancient Romans we need our pound of flesh. The more we viscerate people here in this forum. Ironic the name, huh?

You know the charges, I often know the people. I know this to be a good, a kind, a compassionate woman. I know this to be someone who cared for her ailing mother often sacrificing her life, her career, for her mother. I know that she was a strong fighter in the state legislature on issues that mattered to poor folks.

She may have done what she was accused of, or there might be more to the story. The point is, all these cries of corruption, and she had it coming to her, or Cord Rapert, or whatever are NOT matters of any substance.

Today a lot of people who know her are worried about the person. If she is convicted, what will be done will be done.

      Now, to discuss some of the apparent chess game in the timing of the arrest.

First off, I have no idea or info on the strength or weakness of case against Ms Shoffner. This is just generic questioning raised by reports and indicate info I will be attempting to glean from future reports.

Was Ms Shoffner a flight risk? Or was there an indication of future actions that hamper the case against her?

The reason that popped into my mind first is that a late Saturday arrest and booking is significant. Compounded exponentially by the fact that the arrestee is going to be held instead of bonded out.

Possible reasons for picking her up outside of 8-5, M-F resulting in 36 hours locked up.

-Flight risk.
-Give her a 2 night taste of what prison will feel like.
-Shock her into plea bargain.
-Shock her into implicating others.
-Shock and startle co-conspirators.
-Inhibit her ability to coerce co-conspirators.
-Inhibit her ability to conspire with co-conspirators.

It has been often proposed that white collar criminals that stole money are most fearful of loss of freedom and shame of serving time, then monetary penalties.

These are what I will be reading between the lines to find out.

      Does anyone else think that it is ironic that these Tea Party groups organized to "promote social welfare?" On the IRS debacle, here's a sampling of the more sobering aspects:

"The outrage that Washington should be talking about is how the Citizens United decision has unleashed a flood of secret spending in US elections that the IRS and other regulatory agencies in Washington, like the Federal Election Commission, have been unwilling or unable to stem."
http://bit.ly/17ZJJOJ
====
"AFP (Americans for Prosperity) has turned in its tax returns every year, just as the law requires, reporting that it did not spend a dime on politics — an answer that seems implausible from a common-sense perspective, but one that the IRS appears to have accepted as consistent with its vague and ambiguous definition of political activity."
http://politi.co/13yIIIM
====
It’s ludicrous for groups like Crossroads GPS—which spent at least $70 million during the last election—to claim that its primary purpose is not political activity. Only the likes of Karl Rove would believe that running attack ads against President Obama qualifies as "social welfare."
====
"The IRS’s tea party scandal, however, could hinder the agency’s willingness to ensure politically active nonprofits obey the law. The IRS will likely operate on this front with even more caution, taking pains not to appear biased or too aggressive. That in turn could cause the agency to shy away from uncovering 501(c)(4) organizations that do in fact abuse their tax-exempt status by focusing primarily on politics."
http://bit.ly/18HKpcS
===
Feeling their oats, the fallout from this incident will be even more blatant political campaigning from these secret tax-exempt groups in future election cycles. Truly, elections will be elAuctions. The winning bidder will not be the voters.

      Dave Rickard's memorial service yesterday was nice. The place was packed, of course, and there were a lot of wonderful people there. One of the ironies of death is that at the memorial service you get a powerful reminder of just how good a person was, seeing how much goodness gathers to say farewell to one of its own.

      Crooked politicians need to be tarred, feathered and rode out on a rail!

I don't care if they are Rep, Dem or Indy!

No wait, I take that back.

I take personal offense if they are Democratic because I have a higher standard for the party that wants my support.

Any support of Shoffner beyond the "innocnet till proven" or "fair trial" is support for corruption and decay in our gov't.

After a fair trial, if proven guilty then ALL THOSE SHOWN TO HAVE KNOWN OF ANY OF THE DEEDS should be-

1st   Forced to resign
2nd Charged with any and all possible crimes

If 2nd step, ANY of those are convicted - Return to 1st step and repeat!

I Login under name Citizen1, because 1st I am a citizen, then all else follows.

If Ms Shoffner is shown to have done what she is charged with, she has done that to Citizen1 AND all citizens.

Anyone that spouted Huckabee blah blah blah, or Nick Wilson blah blah blah, is part of the problem.

In "Art of War" by Sun Tsu, much is made about losing the "Moral Authority" in a cause. That loss undermines success horribly.

1 It hands massive propaganda advantage to the adversary.
2 It kills morale within your own ranks.

To simultaneously weaken your cause AND strengthening your adversary is a double threat. Those are the ones not only beheaded but hoisted for display.

The Democratic Party needs to be seen as the one to disinfect its own ranks to demonstrate that it can be trusted put citizens above party.

      Yes, Cord Rapert is indeed Republican Sen. Jason Rapert's cousin. He worked for Shoffner till about 2 years ago when he was fired. I heard it was related to the NYC trip and Rapert drinking/partying too much. He had worked in all her previous political campaigns. He ran for a local office last year and lost. He ran as a Democrat but his political views have always seemed more Republican (Church of Christ conservative).

Shoffner also has many close ties to Republicans. Steve Campbell (married to Witt Stephens daughter) was a big supporter. His Republican son worked for Shoffner in the Treasurer's office. That is till she fired him after the last election. Seems to me Shoffner has pissed off a lot of people recently.

But if she's guilty she's guilty. Only time will tell.

From the bar and all along my way out the door, 5 of the employees smiled at me, thanked me, and told me to have a great day. I thought that was really nice that they each stopped what they were doing to go out of their way to provide friendly customer service. The seafood coconut soup was awesome as always!
