I already said it wasn't worth it. So no argument there.

Sorry if the fact I am an on-time college graduate from a top 40 lib arts school (meaningless, really) generates an overwhelming amount of cognitive dissonance and violates many of your cherished caricatures of the educational and intellectual profiles of those with whom you fundamentally disagree with.

The good news for you is that they do have therapy for those type of problems.

We should not be encouraging default on any kind of debt. That isn't the kind of nation we should be, and I think we all know that. This is the kind of problem that goes in circles. The people who cause it pay for the people who make the laws to get into office. Both parties, though the repugs are worse. The cost of college would drop pretty hard if there was a bigger tax base of middle class workers, and no need for college degrees to do things like work in a warehouse.

This who thing is a mess. Next up, all Burger King managers will be required to hold an MBA!

Lots of virtue in this young mans thoughts Re college expenses vs debt accumulation.

One thing is for sure ( other than death and taxes ) and that's student loan debt. If you take out college loans you better be able to pay them back quickly. Even if your chosen career path results in an income needed to pay them back later than sooner.

Else, the accumulating interest of deferments will be a financially ruinous ball and chain for the rest of your life till death do you part.

There are plenty of repayment programs, but not one considers your payment based on your income vs lon balance. Every repay program is based on your proximity to the poverty line.

Some say that clear writing indicates clear thinking. Over the years, I have had far too many employees who can’t write clearly and apparently can’t think clearly.

Hmmm. Now that I think about it, my college experience, while largely enjoyable, did little to expand my economic situation. The nuts and bolts of my first choice of profession I could and did learn quickly, most of them in one semester. Beyond that, it was primarily practice and that could have been learned on the job, just as it was by those who preceded me by 10 or 15 years.
Certainly that's not the case in such areas as the sciences and medicine, accounting or math (yech!), history or languages, and, no doubt others I haven't considered.
Now probably one of the most popular courses of study, seeking a business degree? What, to decide to eliminate hundreds of products from Wal-Mart shelves to concentrate shelf space on a few of the best selling products, or most remunerative, only to have to backtrack in short order? To eliminate their fabric departments, only to start stocking a line of sewing machines?
On the other hand, I'd say the most neglected course of study is geography. No, not just the study of the existence of world's countries, or the states and their capitals. Yes, that’s part of it, but just physical geography is much more encompassing, touching upon such things as climate, its historical changes and subsequent evolving land use. You can study agricultural practices from slash and burn to our modern factory farms. Do you know, for example, that our overuse of weed killers has resulted in a field killing layer of residue, similar to a salt layer, being formed inches below some modern fields?
That doesn’t even begin to touch upon the human aspects of the subject from politics to economics to our inter-relationships with each other and with the environment. And much, much more.
Sigh. I wonder what our political landscape would look like if geography were more strongly emphasized in schools.
Okay, that’s my quota of soapboxing for the day.
Although history, with an appropriate emphasis on civics …

College is far less meaningful if everybody goes. The idea that we can send all the blue collar jobs over seas, and send all the workers to college is laughable. We now have a large number of college graduates waiting tables.

BRING BACK THE FACTORIES. Stop with this 'those jobs are gone and they aren't coming back' bs. Make the cost of outsourcing so high that it is no longer lucrative to seek out of country slave labor. If they want to bring in slave made products, there should be a tariff on it the size of a C-130. The jobs will come back pretty fast when these greedy bastards realize that they won't be able to sell in THE MOST ROBUST MARKET IN THE WORLD if they don't do something to keep the market alive. You know, like keep the middle class in tact.

I think there are plenty of students who would be well off not attending college.
If I wasn't afraid of the statistic that 50% of all small businesses fail, I'd probably venture out into entrepreneurship but I'm not fond of taking risks like that.
We still need engineers, scientists, doctors, nurses, etc. so there will always be a need for higher education.

If you want work in a technical profession, the world would prefer that you get the proper education at all levels of school. We had our visual demonstration of lack of knowledge in Brownie's excellant work in NOLA. I want my doctor to have a much education as can be crammed in him. I want bridges built by people who understand engineering as well as failure analysis.

If I want a car, then I'll take the high school drop out who may not be a science expert but understands cars. Plumbers, I want them to have worked as a helper in an apprentice program.

If you want to be the leader of the world, then you better know how to evaluate people because you hopefully can hire the properly-educated people to keep your a-- out of jail and not kill anyone. My management philosophy was to hire the best managers I would find, who knew even more than me in their area, and then get out of their way and let them do their work.

But seriously, I'm not sure I've read a better article all year than this one about the Higher Education Bubble in America. Having attended and graduated from a $30,000+/yr school (and feel it was mostly a waste), it really is quite on point about the problem of what American kids and their parents are being sold by Colleges and Universities like the one I attended.
Yes. If you are a super-genius capable of teaching yourself the things you need to know, college might be a waste of time and money. As for me, I'm going to go ahead and go to doctors that have been to college, and let other folks use the ones who pick up their medical knowledge on the internet.

One of the most persistent generated myths in America is one MUST graduate from high school to be a success or one MUST graduate from college to be a success.

High school is more of a maturation process/procedure where academics has the lowest priority of all the school day activities and college is a very expensive venture in to a world where such priorities are flip-flopped and which only 42 % of attendees are able to do the priority reversal enough to graduate.
