Sista, I look forward to that warm embrace. You are a peach of the first order. You have chided me on subjects, but I have always had reason to respect your thoughts and concerns. I, too, admire you, for I know you have a tought road ahead in this state. I am with you and your WBW to the bitter end.

You know that in mnay ways I lean conservative. In many of the groups I have attended, they will sometimes turn to DOMA, which pissess me off because of all the problems in this country, DOMA is such a non-issue. Things have gotten to the piont that sometimes I get into heated debates with folks that sometimes call me freind. I can't always return the feeling because I can't call friend someone who intends to discriminate against my friends and family.

I almost feel sorry for the closet bigotry of some because they believe they are defending one thing, but the consequence of that defense is harmful to the cause of liberty. They refuse to acknowledge that marriage is not JUST for the religious. It is part of legal lexicon, that marriage is not just a religious ceremony, but, removed from religion entirely, marriage is a contract between two people.

I get 'married' to K, and she gets my stuff, my monies, if I kick off. But a dear friend of mine for 30 years now, when his mate died, he didn't get squat. The state did not recognize their marriage, nor their civil contract because they were a gay couple. Instead, the state gave all the holding and belongins to a family that hated and disowned their gay son. This family was happy to profit from their disowned son. They were happy to deny any of the gifts that should have gone to a partner who had been a steadfast support to their son.

It isn't just unfair, it is unjust. But you have your closet bigots, hating to be called bigots, but the consequences of their acts and words is bigotry.

I love my dad. He was a pretty good father. He had wells of bigotry he did not admit to. He was upset whehn he found out what I had done in L.A. that night when I stopped the gang bangers from beating the gay couple to death. My mo would have rushed to their aid. My godfather would have jumped in to save them. My dad, he would have walked away. That is what panic fan and LLW would do. They see a guy getting beat to death because that kid is gay, they walk away.

A good man would die because they do not like him because of how God made him, yet these creatures say they love God, yet they wold would a child of God die. Because they are bigots.

When I think of things like that, of folks who argue as panic and LL do, I get a deep rumble of fury. There are people I deeply love who are targets because of folks like panic and LLW.

I know how you cannot 'choose' to be gay or not. I wanted, dearly, to be gay. My friend was of such an amazing character and courage and patience, I wanted to want him. Try as I may, though, while we were great friends, and helped each through many heartaches and abuses. He was beautiful. Yet for all the beauty I could see, I was not attracted to him. I wanted to be, Lord knows I was having a hard time with soem of the (bad as it turned out) choices I had made with women. For a short moment, I even thought the problem and fault was mine. But I finally did accept the reality of the biology. We would always be friends, brothers.

And then I think on how he had lost his partner of 30 years, and all the things they shared wwere ripped form him by the state because they could not get married, make that contract between to adults, between two human beings. I think of all the things they shared, gone. Just to ameliorate the delicate insensibilities of some zealot.

Also there is my most dreaded fear of my friend, of Sista and WBW being hurt by some thug. And folks like pnaic would do nothing but watch and slink away. Perhaps that is why I dive in so recklessly when I see a situation. I could run, I could call the cops, or I could do what I have always done when the underdog is getting pounded into hamburger. I stop it. Even if all I have is an unloaded shotgun that I may have to use as a club. I see images of my friends, like Sista with jubilant trogs jumping up and down on their head and I just can't help but fly into the fray.

Because of what I see, and have seen, I have to speak up. This is a verbal street corner, and the thugs are attacking MY friends, MY family and I have to come in swinging to defend my friends and family from the trogs.

These despicable scum, they twist anything and everything, religion, science, math to enforce their own narrow beliefs upon others. that their words have consequence, they care not.

Hell, they say they aren't bigots, can't everyone see that?

Sista, our hearts and prayers with you and WBW. I say 'ours' because I know K is just as dedicated as I am in ending this nonsense of discrimination in marriage.

STJ, thanks for the heads up on Netflix streaming "For The Bible Tells Me So". I'll try to catch that this weekend sometime. Friday nights seem to be a bad night down here for trying to stream movies because of all the heavy net traffic down here in Podunk.
As for the whole "fetish" thing, that isn't uncommon with conservatives. My ex knew some people whom knew people that were that lifestyle (among other things).
You and WBW had better stock up on whips and pleather, and stocks too, for that matter, and soundproof the dungeon, because . . . Michele's hubster receives state and federal funding to practice his fetish, but you can't . . . .

Bachmanns: Gays in Bondage, Need Discipline
By Trudy Ring

Gay people are “barbarians” who need to be “educated” and “disciplined,” in the opinion of Marcus Bachmann, the husband of Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann.

Marcus Bachmann, a clinical therapist, made the statements last year on a syndicated religious radio talk show. ThinkProgress.org’s LGBT page has posted audio of the remarks, characterized as theoretical advice to parents who think one of their children may be gay.

“We have to understand: Barbarians need to be educated,” Bachmann says in the clip. “They need to be disciplined. Just because someone feels it or thinks it doesn’t mean that we are supposed to go down that road. That’s what is called the sinful nature. We have a responsibility as parents and as authority figures not to encourage such thoughts and feelings from moving into the action steps. ...

“And let’s face it: what is our culture, what is our public education system doing today? They are giving full, wide-open doors to children, not only giving encouragement to think it but to encourage action steps. That’s why when we understand what truly is the percentage of homosexuals in this country, it is small. But by these open doors, I can see and we are experiencing, that it is starting to increase.”

The remarks are consistent with other statements Bachmann and his wife, a congresswoman from Minnesota, have made about gays. Michele Bachmann, who has a lesbian stepsister, has referred to homosexuality as “bondage” and “dysfunction,” and claimed that encouraging young people to be tolerant of gays is “child abuse.” She has also said that being gay is “from Satan.”

Marcus Bachmann runs the Bachmann and Associates mental health clinic in Minnesota; it touts its therapies as “Christian counseling.” It was recently revealed that the despite Michele Bachmann’s vocal stands against government social programs, the clinic has accepted federal and state funding.
And, to whomever cited links re: Dr. Bagemihl, one of them simply linked to a brief bio of the scientist. Our poster then asserted something like, "Because Bagemihl is gay his research is biased."

(That's the same assertion about Judge Walker and his anti-Prop. 8 ruling, which has been shot down in court -- because it's simply stupid to assert that black judges cannot rule in race-discrimination cases, women judges cannot rule in rape or abortion cases, gay scientists don't count, etc.)

The other link was actually a "letter" in a blog from an anti-gay poster IN RESPONSE to News Medical's original article, "1,500 Animal Species Practice Homosexuality," which is cited here:

http://www.news-medical.net/news/2006/10/2…
Which is the same as our poster saying something scientific ISN'T science, because he says it's not, citing a troll's blog post to prove it.
John A Arkansawyer,

I've not found any "glimmers of nonassity'' with Arkansas Panic Fan. (BTW, I adore that phrasing and may borrow it sometime, if it's OK with you).

APF has posted 14 times on this thread alone. And with each post, he upped the ante with his inane "assity.''

I couldn't help but think about APF and his ilk tonight when WBW and I watched a fantastic documentary titled, "For the Bible Tells Me So.'' It's streaming on Netflix and is well worth the 136-minute investment.

It's essentially how the haters (not true Christians, like APF) love to use scripture to belittle and harass in the "Name of God.'' It's very moving and enlightening.

I loved Desmond Tutu's line when he says (paraphrasing), "I can't imagine God condemning me to a life of being hated because I am black rather that white..... And, I can't imagine God condemning gays and lesbians to a life of being hated because they're not straight.''

The following clip was in the documentary as a comical aside. I had seen it before but it's worth another look.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKqKsXdokCM

This thread is very telling and gives me hope. It's pushing 120 comments, and the "good guys'' outweigh the bigoted haters by a 9-1 margin.

When I joined this blog two years ago, I would estimate the haters to be about 60-40 on gay threads.

This state will obviously have to be dragged kicking and screaming by the Federal government for us to have full equality, but it doesn't go unnoticed by us LGBTs when our hetero friends are willing to stick up for us.

Thank you Norma, Tap, Any*Mouse, John A, Doc, Drack, Silver, Eureka, Hugh, Larry, Ozarkrazo, Nanc, et al. It means a lot, you guys. You probably don't realize how much.

Personally, I was most touched by Steven E's posts. This is a guy most of us are at odds with on other issues, but he's obviously one who will fight tooth and nail on a subject he believes in. Steven, I'm proud to count you as a valued ally in the LGBT fight for equality. I'll hug your neck when I meet you one day.
Doc, I figure if apf won't answer my simple question after being asked three times, it won't be hard for people to tell what's going on. I'm trying to be gentle as possible about it because there are hopeful glimmers of nonassity in apf's comments from time to time. I've got dear friends with isolated beliefs that offend me, and I seldom use the clue-by-four on them, either.

Sorry DD, my mental image of this person who is making a ludicrous attempt at one-upmanship brought the term to the surface. He/she did not understand my original normal/Gaussian point, that he/she was using "normal" in a way that confused the statistical and non-statistical senses of the word. He/she continued by showing who is adept at finding terms through Google without any understanding of their meaning. (Words, but not the language.)

This does get sillier and sillier as it continues, so I'm through with it. Perhaps JohnAA or bbbotanist will have some success with their efforts, but I doubt it. I do wish them luck, though.

arkansas panic fan, for the third time, I ask you: How do you "put homosexual activity vs heterosexual activity on a bell curve"? Be specific.

Since you've had trouble answering this rather simple question taken straight from your own words, let me give you a prompt: What are you measuring on your horizontal axis?

This isn't hard. Most who read this blog have an idea of what it means to read a graph.

Your original answer, "Take a statistics class," isn't good enough.

I also see you've dismissed scientific evidence about homosexuality in nature based on Norma's postings. Norma, bless her heart, is about as likely to talk about astrology as science, and to present speculative popular science as accepted scientific fact. Let's leave the farm and get back to primates and homosexual behavior in nature.

As I said earlier, many primate species beside humans exhibit homosexual behavior in nature, including macaques, orangutans, and most notably bonobos. Do you dispute that? In particular, do you dispute that "Studies suggest 75 percent of bonobo sex is nonreproductive and that nearly all bonobos are bisexual"?

Oh, and jtsims, the anus has at least one function other than letting crap out. It also keeps crap from spewing, a lesson many on this thread might take to heart.

There are lots of churches that will bless a same sex marriage. Many UCC, UU, some Episcopalian, some Methodist. There are probably others I have missed. I agree with Hugh Mann that the government should not be in the business of bestowing sacramental status on anything and should only be giving licenses for civil unions. Unfortunately, our society has taken another road so it must be marriage for all.

"Normal" has connotations (for example, the "norm") that can confuse people like you. Now, before you embarrass yourself again, I'll let you in on a little secret. I teach doctoral-level statistics classes"

I am a billionaire too. Or at least I claim to be on the internet. Nice handle, Doc.

Please point out where I have embarrased myself Professor. I would love another lesson in statistics. Let's discuss multi-dimensional gaussian function. Go.

"Perhaps you want to veil your bigotry with science, however weak it is, or your own personal version of sin. This country, fortunately, does not legislate sin, it prtects justice. One wonders at what point justice suffers from allowing two adults from consumating a contract?"

Once again, look up the meaning of bigotry. We are arguing marriage for gay people here. Churches don't recognize it, neither does the united states of america. So by agreeing with those two institutions, I am a bigot? Ok. I don't believe in gay marriage. I am a bigot.

panic fan, LLW, folks like you make possible the killings of gay folks. You create that knee-jerk excuse mechanism that since they are a minority, that they are sinners, that they are damned, it is okay fine to subjugate and bully them. Example, that fine pile of scum, Clint McCance, who would disown his own child if that child were born gay.

Probably going a little too far with that statement. I never advocate the murder of innocent people anywhere. I have never said gay people are lesser than heterosexuals. That is a loaded statement and an assumption. I don't believe in gay marriage, sorry, but that doesn't equate into I want gay people dead.

This is a typical liberal overreaction. So someone doesn't agree with your opinion, well ok, not everyone does. Are you the type that is friends with everyone? Do you always want to make everyone happy? You seem to. Grow some thicker skin.
That is even more rare than homosexuals. Do you think that redheads should be denied rights that other people have based on their rarity? There have even been periods in history where many religions thought that redheads were evil or possessed.

Love this, panic fan and LLW, from religion, to biology, to whatever, all to justify their bigotry and their desire to discriminate against other human beings. This desire to subjugate does not come from any harm that gays commit, but from nebulous standards of thought. There is no justice in denying a human being the right to make contracts. Marriage, whether done by state or church is a civil contract. It is entered into by two consenting adults.

Perhaps you want to veil your bigotry with science, however weak it is, or your own personal version of sin. This country, fortunately, does not legislate sin, it prtects justice. One wonders at what point justice suffers from allowing two adults from consumating a contract?

You do not create legislation against something merely because your offended by it.

You do not create legislation to discriminate merely because the narrow views of some closet bigot says it is so.

Whatever their race, their color, even their sexual orientation, they are still human beings. Is there denial of that one fact?

I find it funny, to a point, that folks that insist they are not bigots, will debate the meaning of the word to justify their belief that they are not bigots, will enact legislation driven by bigotted ideals, intolerance and disgust that wil deny these human beings their right that all Americans should enjoy. There is NO other justification for the denial of rights other than bigottry. Gays to not commit criminal acts, though there was someone I debated on facebook that compared gays to rapists and murderers. That kind of blind, blatant stupidity is rare. What is common is this notion that the govt, or the populace, as ANY right to deny folks their liberties based on notions of morality that are nebulous, at best.

Again, where is the interest of justice in denying what are undeniably human beings, their basic rights? None of course, except to those that have narrow minds and views they wish to enforse, at piont of bayonet, upon the unbelievers.

panic fan, LLW, folks like you make possible the killings of gay folks. You create that knee-jerk excuse mechanism that since they are a minority, that they are sinners, that they are damned, it is okay fine to subjugate and bully them. Example, that fine pile of scum, Clint McCance, who would disown his own child if that child were born gay.

I taught my daughters that people are idiots on their own merits. Fortunately, they accept folks on face value. They accept folks as equals until they prove their lack of merit, by showing their idiocy in its many forms. Intolerance, hate, bigottry, a desire to subjugate others, these things they fight. I am extremely proud of them. Like the Melissa Etheridge song, Legacy, the hate ended with my family. Our family has been hurt by the kind of blind hate, the closetted, sheltered hate of the unrevealed bigots who claim they are not. We push back, all of us, against that kind of ignorance. The thinking of folks like PANIC and LLW leads to the gulags, to the camps. Folks like those would LOVE what Cuba has done with its homosexuals, the concentration camps set up for the 'Maricons'.

Folks like that, no matter how they couch it in science, religion or morality, endorse and endeavor to enforce hate. They are, and will always be, Bigots.
