I say let's legalize pot, allow it to be distributed and sold legally, and tax it heavily. Require those that want to purchase it purchase a permit, and require them to install a THC/alcohol detection device in their vehicles. It could reduce our prison population 80% within 10 years, and might save Mexico from collapse. The War on Drugs is lost...we have to think differently.

Caller: "Hello 911, Someone is just shot a window out of my house and is now crawling through. Please send help!"
911 Operator: "I'm sorry ma'am, all our officers are out currently making drug deals or escorting drug traffickers so they won't be harassed by the good officer's. It'll probably take 20 - 30 minutes before someone will be free of their deals. If they are not totally screwed up themselves, and they can find your address, I might send them. I also want to emphasize to you, ma'am, that you do NOT call West Helena between the hours of 1 and 2 a.m. because this is our pot smoking break. So long, and have a nice night."

This might be what part of the problem is. Or maybe the 911 operator could have said, "I'm sorry, our officer's are now selling pistols and AK-47's to the local burglars and don't have time to screw with you and your petty burglary in process call. Bye bye."

Really? How do you explain excessive drug use/activity in places like Dallas, New York, London, Paris, L.A., Seattle, Colorado, Florida, and other places? It is called supply and demand (simple economics). Just because a place is blighted or non-educated or the exact opposite, you still have the same problems. Drugs are in demand and they make an extensive amount of money. The invisible hand will always be there to guide it along. Even if you legalized aspects of it, you would still have a black market. The US refuses to alter the war on drugs, therefore, we will continue to have more of the same. This is only news for law enforcement officials and local media outlets.

The Delta is an economically depressed area which makes it ripe for this kind of a situation to brew. As long as drugs are illegal, there will be a trade created by those seeking to improve their material position in life.

I predict that eradicating the vermin in this situation will only be a temporary solution. There must be investment in the community via the education system to produce capable people, but that won't be enough. Some form of Industry must be added to the area to gainfully employ these people - otherwise all of today's actions will be for naught.

Oh, wait. My mistake. Investment in this region would require participation by the Millionaires - many who would not be caught in the area in broad daylight.
One concern of mine... as a landlord... is the damage that smoking inside causes (this includes tobacco as well.) The stench of pot (or tobacco) smoke costs thousands of dollars to clean up.

I had to take a house back from a bad tenant last summer, and replacing the carpet, then applying Kilz and repainting every wall and ceiling cost me a bit over two thousand dollars. Plus the house was vacant an extra month while I was doing the work, not earning any money.

If we create a "medical marijuana" entitlement, who reimburses me for the cost to my house when a tenant stinks it up? Today I can ban smoking on my properties... the non-smoking tenants love the clean air.

Sounds like they busted some bad cops and other less than gentle people throughout eastern ARK. Good for law enforcement and the communities. I saw alot of extortion in those indictments.

Pot isn't that big of a deal to me, nor cocaine, or any other illicit drugs. However, the way they are distributed by people is a whole other issue. When you have police officers on the take, guns, extortion, etc. You have a huge problem. I am glad the readers of the AR Times think that this isn't a big deal. Citizen 1 should lay off the dank prior to responding to this thread.

The marijuana in this case won't be the big ticket item. It will be corruption and extortion.

Reality is such that various bad laws need to be whittled away as a way to make them irrelivant and reduce resistance.

Chip chip chippin away. It is realistic instead of optimum.

Incrementalism is a successful strategy when it must be demonatrated that the sky won't fall if an action is taken.

At this time the predictions of reefer madness can only be proved bunk but incrementalism.

Similar to same sex issues. A couple states have legitimmized same sex unions and viola! The sun came up the next day.

Many terrified widow women whom had been led to believe they would be barred from heaven due to the chaos unleashed on the USA, saw that nothing changed, and if they worship a loving God He would surely not deny them eternal bliss for what they could not effect.

Same with pot. People high on pot do not tend to get aggressive as alcohol tends in a portion of the population. Pot smokers tend not to drive really fast, pot smokers tend not to get in bar brawls, pot smokers tend not to beat their women, pot smokers tend not to call in sick hung over, pot smokes tend not to.......

So yes, let us incrementally reform the ignorant pot laws so that..

1) We can keep it out of minor's hands.
2) We can reap tax money instead of dump loads of tax money into the Detention Industrial Complex, Enforcement Industrial Complex...
3) End the law which initiates the first contact of impressional teens with the criminal element of society.
4) End the law that breeds contempt for legal authority.

That is how this thread went from big drug swing into legalize and regulate pot thread.
700?! To arrest about 60 people it took 700?!

I'm NOT knocking the investigators, just the ridiculous amount of manpower needed to investigate a bunch of drug dealers. How much money was spent on the investigation? Again, I'm not knocking the investigators, it's just obvious we need a more effective way of dealing with illegal drugs.

Why did this thread turn into legalize pot soapbox? This is about Helena/West Helena and a large drug/public corruption bust.

If your effort to get medical marijuana on the ballot is successful I will vote against it. Medical marijuana is a farce. Has the FDA ever approved marijuana for any purpose?

If you want to legalize marijuana for all then I will vote for it but don't try to use the excuse that it should be used for medical purposes only.

Slingerland is right about it being illegal at the Federal level. The feds are even going after pot stores in California and shutting them down. For some reason the Obama administration has switched sides on the issue. Maybe his big bank supporters are pissed because they are not getting this legalized pot money to launder like they do from the boys in Mexico.

My point is that if the law is a bad one, we need to fix the law, not ignore it. And the Supremacy Clause gives this round to the Feds.

A local law doesn't matter. It is still illegal at the Federal level. Until the Federal law is overturned, smokers are still liable for criminal prosecution.
