I can't believe the blind support some people show for a person and company that has single-handedly done more than anyone else to destroy the American economy. Their money is used to manipulate and control the market, and obviously the legal system too. They removed enormous numbers of manufacturing jobs from the USA and gave them to China. They pay the least to their suppliers and their workers, and pocket more money than they know what to do with. Meanwhile, Walmart workers need food stamps to survive. Poor Alice!!????? I think not. Greedy, uncaring and dangerous more aptly describes her and her family.

How about this,,, Alice needs a breath-ah-lyzer key device for all of her vehicles. And remember, or realize, Alice, by her dad, became wealthy, by being a cheap-skate... Not only by cutting out the middle man, and by being as cheap as possible to all the men and women who work for them, the WalMart employees. Lowering a lower class, and taking their cut. Labor just keeps getting cheaper (for them). That is why WalMart vigorously eliminates any sign of workers unions being formed. Just t isk about it for a while. Watch some documentaries about them. It's true. It's about profit, profit from the workers. That is why they can sell so low.

Alice Walton is a drunk and she is so because she is a failure. Her one brief marriage failed & all of her attempts to start and run companies on her own failed. Her only contribution seems to be Crystal Bridges, the cost of which is spinning out of control. What people don't seem to get is that the museum lies to the public on a regular basis - about costs, timing of purchases, etc. Why on earth would a 501c3 have the need to lie? It is because the museum is a seemingly clever way to avoid taxes and other expenses (they got the Arkansas legislature to pass tax laws simply meant to benefit them) for the corporate investment by Walmart in art. Still Alice continues her ways. She is a sad and pathetic figure. It is truly unfortunate that someone of her means will never really find herself and make any great contributions of her own. The museum was apparently an order from her mother and her family to assist in the family's investments. Too bad that the museum will do no real redefining or discovery of art. It can't be. It is all about dollar value of art. What is this work worth and what will it be worth 5 years from now? Poor Alice, what will your contribution really be, if anything? I just hope she doesn't hurt any more people before we find out.

Norma, I wholeheartedly agree with your synopsis - even as the victim of a drunken Walton. My major gripes are: a) with the system that allows these people, based on their financial and political power (in my opinion), to elude the justice system that most other citizens would have to face in the same situation; and b) with the other family members who actively allow and promote this behavior by financial, politically and emotionally defending these unacceptable actions. James McNabb Walton actually testified to the court that his family was helping him overcome his alcohol problem by sending him to AA and then drinking socially with him so that they could "monitor" his intake. LUDICROUS! He also testified that he and his family knew he had a problem, but I guess it wasn't a big enough problem to address until he nearly killed me and other innocent citizens in our community. And the legal system in this matter? What a joke! I am not envious in the least of the Walton's fortune - I am disheartened that this fortune seems to allow the family to be reckless at the expense of others.

      Amazing.

Apparently not one blogger here has ever had an alcoholic family member, spouse or friend.

Demanding that Alice Walton make rational choices? ("Why didn't she get a chauffeur?") Alcoholics aren't rational. What an uninformed statement.

All the resentful comments alluding to money and privilege can be ignored. They're pointless, other than displaying the bloggers' issues with envy and class. They have nothing to do with alcoholism. Look at Gloria Vanderbilt's life -- which she opened like a book a couple of weeks ago on her son's, Anderson Cooper's, show. A MUCH harder and more traumatic childhood and upbringing, and adulthood, than Alice Walton's. NO alcoholism.

Alcoholism eventually becomes a disease if untreated. Alice Walton's already killed one person because of her untreated disease. Interventions? They don't work. UNLESS the individual has "bottomed out" (an entirely personal assessment: obviously killing somebody once wasn't enough for Alice to "bottom out" -- THAT'S how tragic she is now).

So here's what will happen. Alice Walton will continue drinking and denying she has a "problem."

She will eventually die of alcohol-related illness. (Alcohol is a toxin that deteriorates and destroys the brain, liver, kidneys, heart and every other organ.)

Alice Walton is poisoning herself to death. Before she eventually kills herself, she may well injure or kill more people.

Her sad and tragic condition has nothing to do with being a good person, bad person, rich person, poor person, heiress, nobody, right- or left-wing person, philanthropist, miser, Ted Kennedy, Michael Jackson or anything else.

It has everything to do with a now chronically poisoned dysfunctional physical system exactly like any other addict.

Alice Walton's "spokesperson's" statement is hollow and meaningless without long-term treatment.

Without that, Alice just gets worse and the question REALLY becomes: who dies first as a result of her long-term self-destruction? Alice or somebody else ?

Oh, and quite interestingly enough, you'll find many references to James Walton Sr. having four children (and many billions of dollars) - but what you won't find so easily is information on that fourth child, James McNabb Walton (the son and drunk driver in Blacksburg). Apparently, there is something that the Walton family wishes to hide about this member. I should dig out the police report and my files from the court hearings...

This is not the only Walton that seems to have an alcohol problem and knack for staying out of jail. James Walton (grandson of the Walton clan) was arrested and charged with misdemeanor DUI and felony hit-and-run in February of 2008 in Blacksburg, VA. Mr. Walton was underaged at the time, and had just flown into the Virginia Tech campus on a private plane after a hunting trip in TX. The incident occurred at 4:45pm on a Monday afternoon, when Walton slammed into the driver's side door of an attended vehicle and then fled the scene. The felony charge was ultimately not upheld (thanks to the joke of a Commonwealth's Attorney in Montgomery County), and Mr. Walton was allowed to quietly withdraw from the university. During one court appearance (at which his mother, father and siblings were in attendance), he admitted to the court that he was attending AA meetings in Denver CO, though still drinking socially; it was at this hearing that the felony charge was effectively dropped pending a 1-year probationary period.

While this incident wasn't highly publicized, I can provide all of these details because I was the victim of Mr. Walton's crime. I was also the victim of egregious harassment by the sleazy attorney, Chris Tuck (Blacksburg, VA), whom Mr. Walton's parents quickly retained to resolve the incident. Mr. Tuck not only made unsolicited, surprise visits to my residence, but continued to call my phone after I had expressly asked not to be contacted.

DWI/DUI may generate state funds, but these laws are critical and should be enforced to protect the safety of other citizens.

I sincerely hope that the Waltons will invest a few of their billions to get get help and/or cages for their reckless and careless family members.

We stand in awe of the Walton Family! They have generously donated $2.4 billion to the Crystal Bridges Museum. That is an impressive...... Uh, 2.58% of their $93 billion fortune. The museum has been acquiring artwork since 2000, so those donations have to be amortized over 11 years, or 1/5 of 1% per year. A comparable donation from a family with a net worth of $100,000 would be a whopping $218!!! Couched that way, their donation, of inherited money, doesn't seem all that generous.

The comments about Alice Walton's face are uncalled for. I don't like the misogyny people here often stoop to when talking about women's looks. (I'm looking at those of you who decided to name Sue Madison "Mad Sue" because of a photograph you thought unflattering. Max's frequent references to Joyce Elliott's short hair bother me, too.)

On the other hand, when Alice Walton was arrested for drunk driving in Springdale, she did the "Do you know who I am?" thing with the arresting officers. She threw a hissy over being stopped while rich. If she's going to expect the law to treat her differently because she's wealthy, I'm going to say that's wrong.
