The videos on the net have shown that a small percentage of police have no business holding a badge.

I'm just now starting "Original Blessing" by Matthew Fox, outlier. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

In the meantime, let me once again recommend "Saving Paradise: How Christianity Traded Love of This World for Crucifixion and Empire" by Rita Nakashima Brock (arrested this week at Occupy Oakland) and Rebecca Ann Parker: http://savingparadise.net/. It takes a lot to move a crusty old atheist with a view of Christianity incarnating paradise on Earth, but they did it.
And no, I don't think Steven Evil is evil as a person, but his ideas are. I also think you're right that he's got a basically good heart. It's his head where the trouble is located. I'm still thinking about taking him up on his offer to meet when I'm in Springdale next week for Thanksgiving with my mom and my daughter.

Anyway, I spent last night at the Occupy Little Rock camp this morning, but left before breakfast, as quiche is not my thing. Mac is a great cook and I'd been hoping for more home fries. Last weekend, I spent a night and day there with the Arkandaughter. Neither of us found any vermin in our clothes, unless Steven Evil counts her and me.

Steve? The ball's in your court.

I disagree, John. Steven is misinformed about a lot of things---probably too much faux news and too much time spent on those anti-government, survivalist and right wing web sites. BUT, he has a good heart and is not a troll. He's worth saving.

My next mission is to disabuse him of the notion that "the nature of man is pretty base". How very Calvinistic of him---Calvinism is just one of the wrong turns taken by institutional religion that has warped beyond recognition the message of Christ. We are not base, Steven. We are "born trailing clouds of glory, from God, who is our home". If you are taught from birth that you are born totally depraved and enslaved to the service of sin, then you are apt to act that way at least some of the time. You are also apt to see that depravity and sin in others.

Granted, sometimes the clouds are tattered and worn thin, allowing more dickwadishness to shine through than glory. But given the right conditions, we all are capable of becoming fully human and mostly good.

In defense of "dickwad", Urban Dictionary has, at present, 29 definitions to choose from. My favs are #10, # 16, and #20. For sheer inventiveness, #7 gets kudos from me.
"precise, and factual" And I am in awe of the precision and factuality (I just made that word up) of epithets like vermin, critter, scum, rabid dogs, fleabagger, etc. Alas, so many epithets, so little time to glean them from Steven's posts. Even our military uses epithets to dehumanize the foe; it's so much easier to kill someone if you can think of them as less than human. "Gook" comes to mind from the Korean and Viet Nam conflicts. The Third Reich was rather fond of the practice since it was much easier to march "vermin" off to the ovens, than an actual human being. It's also much easier to pepper spray them when they are sitting in peaceful protest.
Why, it seems like only yesterday, Spanish for Boner, when we were talking about the aborning New World Order.

Actually, it was April 5th we discussed same on these very threads. 'Member? ‘Course ya do.

Chris Hedges saying: "The phrase 'consent of the governed' has been turned into a cruel joke. There is no way to vote against the interests of Goldman Sachs. Civil disobedience is the only tool we have left.” ‘Member that?

And Kevin Zeese, director of Prosperity Agenda? “The political process no longer works. The economy is controlled by a handful of economic elites. The necessities of most Americans are no longer being met. The only way to change this is to shift the power to a culture of resistance."

And ME? “Populaces aren't stupid, no matter how backward or ill-educated. Nor are they forever passive. History is replete with great uprisings against corrupt regimes and governments, including America's own history.

“Wherever one looks -- the Middle East, the Near East, the Far East, China, Europe, South America, North America -- the pendulum's already started to swing.

“NO entrenched powers ever yield or change without a fight. This fight -- worldwide -- is epochal.”

That was April 5th, eLwood. Well before the it-shay it-hay the an-fay in August in the Middle East. This is now.

As I ip-slay into my Jacuzzi and the soothing Caribbean caress of Crabtree & Evelyn’s Spider Lily salts (for Razorbabies wondering where to shop to stuff my Christmas stocking), my iPod reverberates off the marble tiles: an old song from Karen Carpenter, who was departing as I was coming in.
“We’ve Only Just Begun.” ‘Member?

Only, in my mind’s ear, a more menacing harder-edge martial rendition by, say, 3 Doors Down or Nukeateen (if they’re still around) for the, you know, 2012 zeitgeist.
Hate to break it to you...well, no,I don't hate correcting you.

Those two lib/con are both idiots. They are caricatures of the left and right in America. Thing is, the large percentage, are more middle of the road, and will more likely sit and watch Survivor #99 than participate in either OWS or TeaParty event. That rabble is nowhere close to 99%. Maybe 30%, but not close to 99%. Granted, the prime motivation of the OWS, from the beginning was envy, and they are little more than a sometimes peaceful, usually violent lynch mob, the cops will sow restraint the protesters don't deserve. I think that is practical and magnanimous. The lib is wrong when she claims that it was only the greed of wall street that caused the debacle. She conveniently forgets the facts that it was the greed of the large percentage of folks who speculated their lives on a real estate bubble they stupidly believed would never burst. Yup, the little guy, too, holds culpability in this mess, but they would rather hide in shame, or debase local properties rather than face their shame.

Sorry, Yoss, but those two, as an example, are poor representations of me and Outlier. I know Outlier could come up with better stuff than the lib.

But the clear and most hilarious hypocrisy is how those facts are received. Oh well, I am used to seeing various hypocrisies where ever I go. I know the nature of man is pretty base. We have seen this amply displayed with the various fleabaggers in some of the larger cities.

I look forward to this fad passing with the first good blast of winter in the north. Soon the Oakland mayor will have no choice but to clan out the rabble in that part of the world. Meanwhile, the smaller, less violent, more earnest groups will implode from inaction and chaos. No movement has succeeded without a sound goal, plan or figurehead. It is the way of humanity to look for leaders. You cannot change that fact. You can try, but history proves you wrong in every single time. If we were at the point where leadership was irrelevant, you would not have the kind of problems we have anyway. That level of social and intellectual evolution has not happened yet, so it will be another few thousand years before the change does come.

Leaving us with now. The Tea Party had a great idea. Identical in many ways to what the OWS wanted to do. The gatherings were bigger, just as raucous, without the violence. If I had been followed into those meetings and gatherings by some of the folks who had the oWS ideals, maybe it would not have been co-opted by the religious right, and all the crap and corruption they brought in, added in that made me leave in despair. ow, we have what started as the OS, a group of folks eschewing class, and leaders, and plans, and, in the end, any hope of success. Because there were no leaders, there was nobody that cared to take care of the violence from some of the elements that, perhaps, used to be small. Now, they have taken over the group. now, they have earned, by their actions, their own epithet, fleabaggers. They will fail because peole won't follow a mob, and a mob is all this group aspires to be.

As I said before, a golden opportunity wasted. But no, it is dissent, it is peppered with facts, and the response from empty dotts is their own idiocy with an Oxford accent.

When this mob is put down like a rabid dog, there will nobody to blame but the quasi-leaders who refused their responsibilities, and deserve all the rancor real activists have craved for a decade. I sure won't shed any tears for these idiots as they exceed the patience of the people they claim to represent. Bt hey, slap yourselves on the shoulders, ignore those signs, and keep screeching about how unfair the world is, as you continue to defile your own cause.

I know exactly why Abbey departed out to the desert. I share part of his despair for the banality of the human race. I have kids, though, and grandkids, so I keep swinging, for them. I get them the books and the knowledge and the patience required for the continuing fight. Maybe we will get someone worthy of following, who speaks like MLK.

". . . The absolute best way to speak to complete idiots is, of course, not to speak to them at all.

That is, you work around them, ignore them completely, disregard the rants and the spittle and the misspelled protest signs and the fervent prayers for apocalypse on Fox News. Complete refusal to take the fringe nutballs even the slightest bit seriously is the only way to make true progress.

This also happens to be the invaluable advice of one Frank Schaeffer, noted author and a former fundamentalist nutball himself, who made a simply superb appearance on Rachel Maddow's show recently, wherein he offered up one of the most articulate, fantastic takedowns of the fundamentalist idiot's mindset in recent history. It's a must-watch. Do it. Do it now.

Now, you may argue that, while Schaeffer may be dead right and also rather deserving of being quoted far and wide, it's also true that calling people stupid is no way to advance the debate, and is itself rather childish and stupid. And you'd be absolutely right.

But you'd also be missing the point. When you ignore the idiots completely, you are not calling them anything at all. You are not trying to advance any sort of argument, because there is no debate taking place. You are simply bypassing the giant pothole of ignorance entirely.

You are not kowtowing to the least educated of your voting bloc, like the GOP is so desparetely fond of doing. You are not trying to give the idiotosphere equal weight in the discussion. As Schaeffer says, "You cannot reorganize village life to suit the village idiot." By employing option three, you are doing the only humane thing left to do: you are letting the idiotosphere eat itself alive.

Do it for the children, won't you? . . ."
No excuse. Not clipped, just a display of the lowest common denominator, in mob from. I really don't care who used certain words of the English language. My meaning is meant for the target, and the target alone, not for how others desire to find a hidden meaning. If they are vermin, it is because, from what I can glean, they are vermin. Has nothing to do with you bringing Goodwin in on this, it is just how it is.

This is a rare opportunity... people of all persuasions (including many baggers) meeting face to face and sorting it all out. Why would you want someone else to tell you what you can know or do on your own? Heck, Fox is not beneath, editing tricks or even sending people out to disturb kids so they can film and make false claims... why waste time trying figure out what such cretins are up to... when you know you have to begin watching them with that in mind?

All mega corporate, oligarch owned media is part of the problem... I expect bad news, poor representation of a peoples movement from all of them at some point... their salary, their very job will depend upon that.... Fox is THE worst.

I have marched, I have protested. Knowing my Constituional rights, I never used force to impede anyone, unlike the Fleabaggers.

More to prove my point, and disgust, you might want to watch the video within this link, and justify how enjoying a Constitutional right constitutes impedeing children from getting t school? So, how does the rest of the 'peaceful' movement view THESE particular scum and thungs? Is that how it is done, Eureka, go after the kids?

http://nation.foxnews.com/occupy-wall-stre…

Is that the right to assemble you were talking about, Eureka? Do any of our local OWS groups here, or in Little Rock view this as an embarassment? If so, good, it shows more character than I thought possible.

I believe in Right to Assemble far more emphatially than these bozos. I have done it, I have confronted it. When I protested, I didn't assault. I had the duty of helping a friend get to her appointment for a pregnancy test at the local Planned Parenthood. There were some anti-abortion zealots out there, protesting, as is their right. I had no problem with the protest, you wouldn't either, Eureka. Where you and I disagree, is how we practice out rights. These zealots screamed at my friend, who was NOT there for an abortion, but for a test. Two of them made the mistake of trying to block me. Using force to block me is not constitutionally protected. The cop that arrested the idiot agreed with me as they loaded him into the ambulance.

If the OWS doesn't get smart about clogging areas, they will lose still more sympathy as the cops clear them out, and keep them from assaulting folks who just want to get from point A to point B.
