"CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW respecting an establishment of religion, OR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." Do you really believe the Establishment Clause was intended to address Christmas decorations in schools? Doesn't a plain reading of this say, oh, something like: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion?" Not: "And no superintendent shall allow any staff members to post any decorations that reflect any religious roots behind any seasonal holidays." Yes, they need to allow any Muslim staff member who wants to post their views to do so as well. That is where Christian parents have to train their kids what is the truth and what is not. Walk the hall with your kids and discuss what is truth. Religion exists in the real world; why must every trace of it be removed from government schools? The bulletin board doesn't say "Jesus saves." It just traces the cultural roots of oh, the whole reason there is a holiday season in December in America.
I'm originally from Paragould. However, I was raised differently; maybe because the 3 Jewish families in Paragould at that time were family friends. Maybe because the church (yes, I'm Christian) I was raised in taught about other religions because tolerance (at least) is a tenet of my denomination. Interestingly enough, Kay Williams is usually listed in the AEA delegates (yes, I'm a teacher, too) - she surely knows what is required by law.

If it wasn't so rabidly unconstitutional, I'd be OK with this display if the nutty woman would put on on the other wall saying Good Morning Buddha, on the next wall We love you Allah, and on the next wall a picture of a 57 Chevy for non-believing students. God by any name doesn't worry me, it's that some people will only advertized their god, while well over 15 million Americans have other religious beliefs and a whole bunch more than that have zero faith in a higher power.

I don't want to see a Trojan condom sign every 20 feet nor do I think Trojan should advertize in our schools and court houses. It's like all those years that black people had to watch lily white TV until Bill Cosby came along. Share the world people! Add your goofy religion to the other 5000 known brands of organized religion, but quit hogging! Jesus doesn't get to be Number One just because you go to a Christan church. You'd be screaming bloody murder if there were Buddhist displays in your kid's school or down at your court house.

It's either all or nothing and our founding fathered decided NOTHING was the way to go. There's 8 churches per block in Fort Baptist....go handle all the snakes you want there. These idiots act like there's no where to practice their religion......and the truth is we're lousy with buildings of worship. Can't put a Jesus statue on the Moon either! Now...Merry Christmas to you, go be nice to someone and say all the prayers you want at bedtime...my damn Dish box replacement will be here tomorrow and I'll be a happier camper.

If a parent's religion is is so damned important to them, why is it that they are OK with having their kids exposed to "Jesus" in such a casual manner by public schoolteachers with whom they are barely acquainted?? Even the smallest of towns have multiple congregations of the same denomination because they can't agree on how to preach, how to dress, how to wear their hair, etc. Yet, these same people are comfortable with exposing their kids to religious instruction at school, however superficial it may be. It seems to me that if your religion is that important to you, you would want to impart that importance to your child in an environment where you had some knowledge of and control over the content of the subject matter. If I were a schoolteacher and I was required to "teach" the Bible to my students, I would be happy to do so...and when all of my students concluded that the Bible was a collection of fairy tales written by ignorant goat herders who were simply trying to explain the world as they saw it with their limited knowledge, the school board would be very regretful that they forced me to "teach" the Bible.

Thanks, Ozark, for citing the full text of the First Amendment. Most religionists conveniently forget the first clause of the sentence. If she has been warned before, how many chances does she get before she is disciplined? The principal said he was not going to fire her "for Jesus." He wouldn't be firing her for Jesus; he would be firing her for willful disobedience of an order. Do public school teachers not get fired for that? Of course, I am a realist, and I realize that he would be dead meat in Paragould, Arkansas, if he took any action against her.

      Citizen1,

This controversy in Paragould is not about promoting a private "cause" on public property. It's about promoting a religion on public property. That's a violation of the first part of the First Amendment, known as the Establishment Clause. Here's the text:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

The Occupy Wall Street movement has nothing to do with religion. It's about the second part of the First Amendment. It's about petitioning the Government for redress of grievances, peaceable assembly, and freedom of speech.

Jim Walton & Family could afford to build a private school system if they want, and make it free for all (like they did for the Walm-Art Museum in Bentonville). Then they could 'prove' how well their system works.

And yes, the America of yore is no more, no matter how hard the conservatives wish it weren't so. They have plenty of money to throw around trying to get the Supreme Court to reverse its decision in Engel v. Vitale (1962) that banned prayer in public schools. The Alliance Defense Fund is active in nearly every far-right and fundamentalist cause. They were one of the leading groups helping defend the Boy Scouts over their ban on gay scoutmasters.

I loved this paragraph in the Paragould Daily Press article, where Jerry Halsell, a Paragruel preacher, weighed in, endorsing the Alliance Defense Fund's ongoing legal campaign to sue governmental bodies in the name of "religious liberty" for following Supreme Court case law protecting, uh, religious liberty:

Jerry Halsell with the Trumpet for Heritage Ministry said the nativity scene could be on display without violating any laws. Halsell, when learning of the controversy surrounding the nativity scene, volunteered to assist Williams. He provided the Daily Press with several memos from the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) stating that a nativity scene displayed in a public school does not violate the “establishment clause” of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. According to the ADF web site, the ADF is America’s largest legal alliance defending religious liberty through strategy, training, funding and litigation.
