Up since 4:00 AM, so I've had plenty of time to listen and read. Two opinion pieces caught my eye. That fine writer, Charles Pierce, always makes me think and laugh. Here's a sample illustrating why I love his writing style and insight.

"I fear we're now in for a fearsome period of reality-detached spin. The Republican "Establishment" — although having bottom-feeding slugs like Matt Drudge, indicted crooks like Tom DeLay, superannuated media harpies like Ann Coulter, and Bob Dole, The Vengeful Undead, for your "establishment" illustrates another story about Republicans that's worth a second look, but won't get it — has lined up impressively behind Willard Romney, who has
abnegated himself impressively enough just to make that happen."

http://www.esquire.com/blogs/politics/mitt…

Paul Constant at The Stranger is neck and neck with Pierce in competing for my affections. Are all the contributors at The Stranger gay? No matter. If Durango can have an online dalliance with a lesbian, then I can have a virtual crush on Constant. He shares my conviction that conservatives aren't funny with this line:

"He can't make jokes, because jokes are born of nuance and self-understanding..."

http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/the-mes…

I am not as creeped out by Mormonism as Constant. I do share his view that Scientology is pretty creepy. Robert Wright had a conversation with a Mormon, which gives one insight into Mormon belief. One plus for Mormons is they don't believe in a hell---just levels of of heaven. Of course, you have to believe in an after-life to appreciate that, and I am agnostic on that subject and gave up worrying about it years ago. As I assured the Baptist preacher who knocked on my door a year ago and asked if I knew where I would spend eternity, "if there's a heaven, I'll be there." I don't think he believed me.
There is a public hearing at 10:30 this morning at the Natural Resources Center (NRC) in Conway on the proposed closing of the Farm Service Agency office in Conway and moving the remaining staff and records to Conway County (Morrilton) which is already in an overcrowded facility. The Conway office is the result of the previous consolidation of the Perry and Faulkner County offices a few years ago and the NRC was designed and hailed by USDA management when it opened as a one-stop shop for all of the rural needs in one facility. Rural Development had already been reduced to 10 hours a week and that operation has already been completely shutdown and their operations moved to Russelville.

This is a result of a bill passed during the last year of the Bush administration which called for the closing of over 200 FSA offices across the country and Arkansas is a major victim with 10 offices on the chopping block including Pulaski County which had their hearing last week. I am sure Saline probably wrote on this since Saline County farmers (and there are a few) will have to drive just a little further, to Lonoke, which I assume for most of them is not anywhere near their local routes.

I haven't been any nearer Morrilton than I-40 and the two exits on the way west since teh death of a family members 4 years ago but this closing, and that of Rural Development, are major hits to the agricultural sector in Artkansas and, as Farm Bureau likes to say, this is 25% of our economy.
Conservative steps to the plate...it's a swing and a miss!

Waltons don't donate to "a" politician.

There's 50 states, that's 100 Senators. Races each 6 yrs.
There's 435 Representatives with races every 2 yrs.

There's judicial elections in every state. Waltons have stores in all states.

All 50 state legislatures have key committee members.

I will bet you my last dollar the Waltons donate to ALL of them plus state Republican Parties is many states.

It's not as cheap as we like to think, but what's 15-20 million every few years to billionaires?
Interesting viewpoint of the waning 20th and 21st Century changes in U.S. politics.

Polarization also has affected the two parties differently. The Republican Party has drifted much farther to the right than the Democratic Party has drifted to the left. Jacob Hacker, a professor at Yale, whose 2006 book, “Off Center,” documented this trend, citing Poole and Rosenthal’s data on congressional voting records, that, since 1975, “Senate Republicans moved roughly twice as far to the right as Senate Democrats moved to the left” and “House Republicans moved roughly six times as far to the right as House Democrats moved to the left.” In other words, the story of the past few decades is asymmetric polarization.

Two well-known Washington political analysts, Thomas Mann, of the bipartisan Brookings Institution, and Norman Ornstein, of the conservative American Enterprise Institute, agree. In a forthcoming book about Washington dysfunction, “It’s Even Worse Than It Looks,” they write, “One of our two major parties, the Republicans, has become an insurgent outlier—ideologically extreme, contemptuous of the inherited social and economic policy regime, scornful of compromise, unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science, and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.”
I do support the concept of intellectual property protection - with the essential fair use privileges needed for an open society - but is this a burning issue in Arkansas? Is there a good reason for our local congresssman to co-sponsor a bill that mainly benefits sleazy Hollywood lawyers? In exchange for a thousand bucks to his reelection campaign?

That nasty ol' liberal-biased media is becoming more skilled at politely calling a politician, an elected official a liar, but then with more and more Republican officials, practice makes perfect. Are Brewer and Palin twin daughters of different mothers?
Are the GOPers, Tea Bag Partiers, Conservatives eating their young? Will they turn on BreitBart next? Fox is safe . . . Well, let's hope New York is a right-to-work state. We simply can't have teachers, especially very pregnant ones, who work at charter schools organizing like they have rights in modern day Amerika. That simply will not do.
And the parents of those charter school children! Have they no shame? Tsk, tsk, supporting teachers' rights. Where are their family values?
