My God, Sista! Ya honestly brought a tear to my jaded eyes. I just read and re-read your one wonderful paragraph and you give me hope, you give me strength in my perpetually faltering faith in people. Dearest, I would love to proudly call you my sister, my sister in soul.

I am always mystified by how people can make claims about themselves, then proceed to make statements that makes me wonder how serious they truly are about their cause. In my lifetime, I have been party and witness to such casual inhumanity that I often thought my cynical dad was right. That people are only out there to get you, to take advantage of you. That part is in me, a part of me. Also in there, though, are parts of my mom and godfather. My mother's inexhaustible patience, and her firmness of conviction and her eternal yearning for justice. My godfather, who had suffered so much loss, first in Russia during the revolution, then later fleeing Nazi Germany. Then he did his thesis on atavism in northern Canada which again put his life in danger.

I had their example, the one that saw the worst in people and trained me to survive the worst. Then my mom and Godfather, who survived the worst and still saw good on folks. Yes, I have seen the temper in my mom, but usually that came out only when provoked. Between my mom and dad, the lesson was, be calm, be rational, be fair, defend others, but if provoked strike hard and without mercy to stop that aggression. The experience and example of my parents helped me through my life.

So now, all these years later, I have my very own experiences. Some were so harrowing that I know I will not tell my mom for fear of worrying her. But these examples I passed on to my kids as they grew up. Knowing from the previous generations that my kids might have a wild life, I did my best to pass what I knew and what my parents knew.

Among the many things were the use of words and passing them on and not passing them on. I was admonished by someone for using a term about some women on the View. It wasn't horrible, thought it wasn't the nicest thing, it wasn't horrible. The admonishment came from a person who, in another post uses a harsh racist word in conjunction with women being these new lower classes. Here is the blunt me, as blunt as I allow myself to get.

I do NOT give a flying fuck in a Rat' asshole if you vetted your racist term with your friends, no matter their color. Some words, because of their existence need to die. I don't need to vet words through my friends to know how bad they are, or if there is context for their use. There are pejoratives for wonderful folks like Sista that also mean a bundle of sticks, or an English cigarette. I will not use those words. They are awful words. Their very reason for being is to humiliate and belittle another person. I heard my dad use that term on my older brother, once, but it stuck. My older brother was not my dad's son, and he was harshly treated because he was darker. I loved my dad, but I also loved my brother, and seeing my dad beat and curse my brother left me with many issues that took years to sort out. Mom helped me with that. As a father I never used those words. My kids knew of those words, but they never heard me use them. They knew how I felt about it, and my delight, they refused to use those words themselves. Now they have kids of their own, and they don't use those words. Like me, my daughter went through her wild times. Like me, she made herself a defender of the beaten and abused. Like me (thankfully) she tempered her bold enthusiasm with a calmer wisdom.

So, as this family line goes, so dies certain hateful,, nasty, evil words. They are not suffered in our families, nor in our presence. I think of some knuckle dragging troglodyte using those words against my dear, sweet Sista, and my blood boils. I hear or read that evil word for blacks, and I see my brother with tears in his eyes as my dad raised a belt to him, again. There is no excuse nor use for them except as some footnote in a historical text of our dark ages.

I thank you, Sista, for your staunch defense of me, and your endless kindness, even on those topics with which we disagree. Your the brightest star on this blog. Even if some of your football picks are...suspect. Just for you, though, I will wear black and gold just for you. Well, the closest thing to gold I have is a screaming neon yellow shirt, will that do?

I showed my gold and hollered for the Dores till I was hoarse while they were playing the Wildcats in the SEC “tornament” as the broadcasters prefer to pronounce it. Don’t think they’d have beaten Big Blue without me.

You should also know, sweetheart, that DSSW shot me in the head at least five times with her water gun during the game. She does this anytime and every time I get “out of control” and need to be "cooled down"whilst watching ballgames or imbibing a bit too much.

On another note (to everybody), is our boys learning anything at school? Y’know, besides football and other sports? I’d say they is at Bentonville High School. Don’t know that I’ve ever heard a finer three-minute rendition of an old favorite than this ‘un. Congrats to these talented lads. May we never lose the young men and women of their generation to anything as senseless as war.
You're on a roll, Norma. Loved your 6:51 post and last night's emasculation of our resident gay bigot and misogynist, Louie. It made me smile, my friend.

But, I have to take Durango to task for suggesting the oh-so-unfortunate image of Jane Fonda "pleasuring'' Louie. I'd rather run naked down Kavanaugh screaming "Roll Tide'' than have that thought cross my innocent, Southern Belle mind again. Fiddle-dee-dee!

NVR, thanks for the shout-out the other night about my Commodores. Twas the first time since 1951 my alma mater brought home the SEC trophy. I talked to my adorable, 82-year-old dad after the game and he was on Cloud Nine. He was a junior at Vanderbilt when the 'Dores last hoisted the trophy.

Well, NVR, I have no answers about your bracket. The first round will be a virtual crap shoot for all but the overall top 8 seeds (1-2 in each of the four regions). I do have my 'Dores advancing to the Elite Eight because Syracuse's starting center was ruled ineligible today.

I refuse to have Kentucky winning it all because Calipari is running a basketball factory in Lexington and has bad karma going for him from his time at UMass and Memphis. The basketball gods frown on his behavior and will NEVER allow him to win a national championship.

My Vandy boys could make some noise if they get by Harvard Thursday (a terrible matchup for us. I'm a nervous wreck already). Don't forget to wear Black & Gold on Thursday at 3:40 p.m.!

And Steven, my love, I'll defend you tooth & nail about accusations of being a "sexist.'' (Outlier probably didn't mean it in the first place). I think you're much more liberal on social issues than some card-carrying "Democratic'' men who post here. Yes, plainjim, I'm looking squarely at you and folks like Louie. Y'all can't hold a candle to Steven when it comes to women's or LGBT equality.

Show Your Gold!

P.S. Durango and Tap, this is my song to you....
Good lord, norma...guess our much-vaunted healthcare system will only be affordable to the one percent and all the foreign one-percenters. On this issue alone so many Americans have proven themselves dumber than dirt and willing to buy anything the corporatists shovel. Who doesn't need affordable healthcare?? At this rate I expect Republicans to make it legal to toss sick folks on the street rather than provide healthcare to anyone who can't afford the ungodly prices.

Growing up we always had healthcare 'cause my father was a working union man and the union successfully fought for the basics. We even had dental and eye care. Today hubby/I pay a lot for my coverage (he's covered by the job), continue to pay more and more and get less and don't bother dreaming of eye/dental care. Even with great coverage we pay a lot every time a test is run and/or a hospital is visited; and prescriptions are now designated by the insurer rather than the doctor. If there is a drug advertised on TV, forget it. Even so, I can't imagine dealing with an illness while fighting for enough funds to simply visit a doctor...there's only enough energy for so many battles at a time.

Sure health-reform isn't perfect but at least it's an attempt to stop the bleeding until reason prevails and the healthcare profiteers are kicked from the system. Sadly I have little hope that sanity will prevail in my lifetime. What is wrong with people??? Do they honestly believe that their family will never face a serious illness or are they stupid enough to believe that because they have some sort of policy they'll be just fine? They won't be.
