Norma, what would you propose doing, then, with the significant number of Catholics who push against the immoral behavior of church leaders, but who continue to claim that the church belongs to us, too?

It sounds as if your prescription is to walk away, and perhaps that's the only possible moral position when an institution is so totally corrupt that having anything at all to do with it implicates one in its immorality.

If that's the situation with the Catholic church, though, I'd say it's the situation with all structures of organized religion--and in that case, your prescription is to walk away from religion altogether.

But if people who see transformative potential within religion--potential to sustain alternative social imaginations of a more humane world--all walk away, what kind of world do we leave the religionists to build then? If religious groups are comprised only of like-minded dictators with stunted moral imaginations?

It seems to me not only prejudiced to view all Catholics as champions of clerical sexual abuse of children, or attacks on gays and lesbians, or laws prohibiting access to birth control. It seems inaccurate. You want to ridicule the notion of what studies say or don't say, but studies do, in fact, show that a larger percentage of Catholics in the U.S. support gay rights and gay marriage than is the case in the population at large. Or among evangelical Christians.

Your unrelenting anti-Catholicism, which lumps Nicholas Kristof, Nancy Pelosi, and Kathleen Sibelius together with Bill Donohue, as if "all Catholics" are the same, places you, ironically, right with Watson in your approach to matters Catholic.

I don't see it as politically wise to undercut solidarity with people of faith in all religious groups who are working to create a more humane world.

So yeah, I'm not sure I give a shit about Augusta...private clubs and all that can be asses if they want, one of the unfortunate prices of "liberty".
Though we all know that important stuff goes on in those private clubs the rest of us are barred from due to sex or our financial status.
What I do know is that if I was the female CEO of a company there is no way my company would be a party/sponsor of that rubbish.

I'm more worried about state inbred Republican Reps and assclown Governors who have made it their mission this year to start taking away access to programs and medical procedures that directly effect women's lives and their personal economic status. Nikki Haley can spew all she wants that women don't care about contraception, they care about the economy. But she knows that is bullshit because there is nothing more important to women & their personal economics then being able to control reproduction.

(and FFS don't go down that whole "personal responsibility" road. It is a straw man. Adult women have sex as do adult men and one should be able to have a healthy sex life without worrying about pregnancy.)

The truth is woman will never be truly equal in this country (and this world) until we are able to completely control reproduction.

My mother was great, my father, not so much. My first wife was wonderful, just terminally ill. mag saved my life and has given me 30 years of constant devotion, love, understanding, guidance and unconditional help, along with hope and forgiveness for my ignorance. mag also gave me 2 female children who get more wonderful with each passing day. The majority of my friends and mentors were/are women.

Now....where in all that would it behoove me to think of women as 2nd class humans? And where in all that would there be something that deterred me from taking up a 2 by 4 and clobbering someone who was bashing women? I can't think of another reason that would upset me more. So I'm pretty sure I should never have coffee or a beer with hatin dinosaurs like Watson.

Ignorance is the number one reason why a person would bash women or minorities of any kind, and I should point out women folk are not in the minority. Ancient religion helps the haters too and I'll have none of that either, thank you. It's 2012, we should be smarter, we should be better and though there's not much I can do to raise the intelligence level of Americans, I can go all ape-shit on the misogynist willing to bash women within my earshot. And I can do all I can to prevent friends & relatives from voting Republican as long as there is a War On Women, and there is a War On Women going on right now. Just hide & watch how well that turns out for the Republican Party.

You appear to have a very unsteady grasp on a central idea of Christian theology, Watson. This is the biblically grounded notion that the church is the people of God and not a building or those who are ordained or those who hold official leadership positions in the church.

The Greek word for Greek, ekklesia, refers to those who are "called out"--the community of those gathered together by the Spirit to form church. Or, as one of the epistles of Peter in the Christian scriptures says, the living stones gathered together to form the edifice we call the church.

The notion that you can have some kind of viable church community in which a handful of church leaders simply ignores and refuses to listen to the sense of the Spirit within the large majority of church members contradicts the most fundamental New Testament understanding of the church. As Cardinal Newman stated, the sensus fidelium is part of the process by which the teaching of church leaders is established. Teachings that are not received by the majority of the faithful--as in the case of the birth control teaching, where 98% of Catholics reject it--are simply not true teachings.

It's interesting that as someone who isn't Catholic you have so much invested in trying to impose the teaching of a handful of Catholic leaders about birth control on the vast majority of Catholics who reject that teaching. It's also astonishing you'd want to suggest that the 98% of Catholics who reject that teaching for valid moral and theological reasons are Judas.

What's your motivation in this intra-Catholic discussion, I wonder?

@Watson: "Judas was a disciple of Christ."

Well, I'm not quite sure I'm ready to go so far as to see the hierarchy of the Catholic church as Judas. Not quite yet, perhaps.

But if I did, I'd certainly want to remember that Jesus offers bread to Judas at the Last Supper--something some members of the current hierarchy don't want to do in the case of gay Catholics.

And that Jesus opened his arms in forgiveness to everyone at all on the cross, including the criminals crucified alongside him . . . .

You're surely right to suggest that some followers of Jesus often obscure his face and his message by their unforgiving attitudes, by their punitive attacks on the poor and stigmatized minority groups, though.
