I am really tired of all this "what would you liberals do without oil" claptrap. That is not the point. It's why a giant corporation continues to pump oil through a 60 year old pipeline that spans several states, with no plans to replace or update any of it, or reroute the portions of it that threaten local watersheds. We were in Alaska last year, and there is still plenty of oil in Prince William Sound that was once aboard the Exxon Valdez. "Cleanup" seems to be a relative term to them. We are sure it will be no different in Mayflower. Have any of the homeowners moved back in?

Mark Darr's idiotic comments remind me of a wonderful children's book - "Bartholomew and the Oobleck" by Dr. Suess -

The green sludge is falling from the sky as we join the story, already in progress -

===

The King sprang out of his royal bed sheets.

"By my royal whiskers, it is!" he cried. "Oh, that beautiful oobleck! And it's mine! All mine!"

"I don't like the looks of those blobs, sire," said Bartholomew. "They're coming down as big as greenish peanuts."

"The bigger the better!" laughed the King. "Oh, what a day! I'm going to make it a holiday! I want every man, woman and child in my kingdom to go out and dance in my glorious oobleck!"

"Out in that stuff . . . ?" asked Bartholomew. Do you really think it's safe, Sire?"

"Stop asking foolish questions!" snapped the King. "Boy, you run to my royal bell tower. Wake my royal bell ringer. Tell him to ring the great holiday bell!"

For a moment Bartholomew Cubbins didn't move.

"Run!" barked the King. Bartholomew ran.

For political history buffs highly recommended late evening reading materia,
hat tip to Stephen Smith:

"The New Deal That Could Have Been
RICH YESELSON

"How the white-supremacist South made possible the New Deal—and drastically curtailed it.

snip:
It’s not news to say that the South was different. Katznelson quotes Ulrich Phillips, early 20th-century historian of the antebellum slave South, observing that the region’s “white folk [are] a people with common resolve indomitably maintained—that [the South] shall be and remain a white man’s country.” Katznelson notes that as late as 1938, only 4 percent of African Americans in the South were registered to vote. As University of Michigan political scientist Robert Mickey argues in his forthcoming study, Paths out of Dixie, during this period, there were, in fact, significant variations between “Outer” Southern states and the region’s core—states like Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina that Mickey labels “authoritarian enclaves” under the loose aegis of a democratic federal government. But during the New Deal, at the level of national lawmaking in Washington, D.C., these variations mattered little: The region’s members of Congress mostly supported or opposed the same bills.
.....
Katznelson’s mining of the record yields dazzling, daunting results. In battle after legislative battle, Southern Democrats found themselves pitted on the one hand against Republicans who opposed government expansion and entry into the war and on the other hand against liberal Northern Democrats like Senator Robert Wagner of New York, who sought to strengthen labor and expand African Americans’ civil and political rights. In the New Deal’s early years, Southern members of Congress stuck with their long-held Democratic loyalty and championed the vast sums of federal dollars rushing into their impoverished states. Even the rabidly racist Theodore Bilbo, senator from Mississippi, who proposed as late as 1946 that blacks be resettled in Liberia, voted in 1935 for the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), labor’s so-called Magna Carta.

Considering the low level of understanding of science in this country and how Republicans have exploited it, the public believing stars can shine through the moon is not far-fetched.

Case in point, they trotted out the old "pregnancies can't occur with rape" argument to pass yet another ban on abortions in the House today. When the sponsor said that in the committee hearing and destroyed the fence-building Repugs had attempted with women voters, they had another congresscritter carry the bill on the House floor.

I'm a little hurt lesbians aren't addressed by this Republican as to why gay folks aren't deserving of any equality legislation in the workplace. If all gay men will show up to work in tutus, according to the Republican, what will the lesbians wear?

Will we show up dressed as lumberjacks? Or, as bikers in some leather ensemble? I'd like to know so I can stock up on these items in the off chance that ENDA is passed.
