Thanks for the link, Gylippus. Fits right in with an article and Diane Rehm show about Amy Berman who was diagnosed with Stage IV inflammatory breast cancer and chose palliative care rather than likely useless surgeries, chemo, etc. Berman chose quality of life and may also get quantity as part of her grand bargain. So far she's alive 18 months after being diagnosed, doing better than average and living a relatively normal life. Someone recently posted a link on the blog to an article about her battle. Here's a link to her Diane Rehm show appearance:
It's long at 51 minutes, but I found it worth the investment of time.

Good, Gyl, we can stop all that Koman stuff where 18% actually goes to the research they tout so widely and we can send a check directly to the research organization and cut out the 82% overhead. And unless you have ovarian cancer, there are treatments that do work for a wide variety of cancers. I don't think you are suggesting that we go back to the 1930's where cancer was a death warrant, are you?

Ovarian cancer still has a very low survival rate and I write this as one who lost a SIL to the disease after a long battle. It doesn't have all the campaign fluff that Koman has but then again, their research money goes to research, not excessive salaries and promotion costs.

The state appears to be getting an increase in tax receipts that would or could help with this issue but unless we suddenly start getting Republicans who act like the Christians they say they are, we will start hurting families. I suggest if nursing homes get closed because of funding, teh local representative get a new family member to take care of.

I'd pick cancer, particularly terminal cases. There is evidence that aggressive, and really expensive, cancer treatment in terminal patients is counterproductive.
There are many other counterproductive and ineffective treatments out there that could be done away with as well..

We are experiencing the Republican third way right now... It's called neo-liberalism and inverted totalitarianism. This is where both parties always meet.

Spend nearly an additional trillion government dollars to protect and further enrich for profit medicine in this country. While compelling many more millions to buy/enrich privateers with more trillions. Instead of coming close to trying to do the right thing. There is a very sound reason it can be called Dole Romney Obama care.

As well as further enriching criminal banksters to the tune of way over a hundred trillion dollars. Instead of prosecuting criminals and breaking up the behemoths. Democrats led the way, far more than doubling down on systemic fail...all are responsible for.

Just one example:

***Here’s a quick look into the three former Fannie Mae executives who brought down Wall Street.

Franklin Raines – was a Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Fannie Mae. Raines was forced to retire from his position with Fannie Mae when auditing discovered severe irregularities in Fannie Mae’s accounting activities. Raines left with a “golden parachute valued at $240 Million in benefits. The Government filed suit against Raines when the depth of the accounting scandal became clear.

Tim Howard – was the Chief Financial Officer of Fannie Mae. Howard “was a strong internal proponent of using accounting strategies that would ensure a “stable pattern of earnings” at Fannie. Investigations by federal regulators and the company’s board of directors since concluded that management did manipulate 1998 earnings to trigger bonuses. Raines and Howard resigned under pressure in late 2004. Howard’s Golden Parachute was estimated at $20 Million!

Jim Johnson – A former executive at Lehman Brothers and who was later forced from his position as Fannie Mae CEO. Investigators found that Fannie Mae had hidden a substantial amount of Johnson’s 1998 compensation from the public, reporting that it was between $6 million and $7 million when it fact it was $21 million.” Johnson is currently under investigation for taking illegal loans from Countrywide while serving as CEO of Fannie Mae. Johnson’s Golden Parachute was estimated at $28 Million.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

FRANKLIN RAINES?
Raines works for the Obama Campaign as his Chief Economic Advisor.

TIM HOWARD?
Howard is a Chief Economic Advisor to Obama under Franklin Raines.

JIM JOHNSON?
Johnson was hired as a Senior Obama Finance Advisor and was selected to run Obama’s Vice Presidential Search Committee.***

Furthermore civil liberties have been completely turned upside-down... Dems have been consistently taking Bush years and making them worse. All war criminals run free and profit, promise more. Democrats are as inhumane and criminal on this front as any. Why liberal Obama just preserved the intent/ability to stay in Afghanistan thru 2024!

Zelda's (and 99 percent of all Democrats) inability and unwillingness to see the whole board is just bizarre. It's the same problem she's determined to pretend is a wing-nut exclusive.

Even if I allowed that you have many roads, we are forced to vote as if we have one. And thus, so are our represenatives. And that is the sad truth that makes us think the opposition is "one roaded."

ARKids is a fine, deserving program that without my Leadership Arkansas would never have had. ARkids was a signature effort to move people forward. Many thank-you messages still arrive for our tremendous efforts to create ARKids. It was a crowning achievement and someone must have a heart of stone to deny a child basic access to medical care.

Frankly churches no longer fill such roles and it's understandable why. Churches are here to fulfill spiritual needs and Arkansans have a deep need for that. That's why it's necessary to keep two homes so that where the spiritual need is greatest we are still part of the people and society . But, in a Christian nation like ours, there is no excuse for denying children basic access to health care.

"You can't cut Medicaid without throwing people out of nursing homes or depriving children of working poor of health care. You can't sustain the program without more money. Democrats will be willing to make that tough choice."

Which tough choice are the Democrats willing to make? Throwing people out? Depriving? Those are the tough choices. Taxing someone else is not a tough choice.

Unfortunately, both sides now follow a "single ancient worn out and rutted" road. Taxes need to be paid and government spending needs to be cut. Some rich, white guys need to pay more in and some entitlements need to be "thrown out."

The liberals (even on this blog) an the Rethuglicans have all become "one roaders". So I guess we can take comfort in the fact that our representatives truly represent us by being equally single minded.

Max, there is "fat". There must be or there wouldn't be legislatiors elected to a job paying less than $15K a year but the pull down a total of over $50K each in state monies. I suggest they go after and correct that illegal operation and then they can talk about hitting nursing homes. I also suggest they go and read the ADG ariticle by Mike Masterson, one of their great backers, on the existing problems with Arkansas nursing homes already. Maybe, they want the state to take over all of these "capitalistic" businesses that are killing people and violating both state and federal laws as well as many of the religious commandments that these people wave around like a flag. And don't forget all of those illegal "religious" daycare centers in violation of state and federal law and usually run by a legisltor themselves or a close friend (milking the government).

It would all be laughable if the blatant lying and blatant failure to offer halfway workable policy alternatives hadn't worked so well for the 'I know nothing except Obama/Democrats are 100 percent wrong REGARDLESS' Republicans. It's clear that lying incompetency works and is profitable for Republicans.

We're not a full four years past the biggest economic collapse of most of our lifetimes and at least fifty percent of the country has forgotten any fact or detail about what policies and which guy/Party led the country over the cliff...(and another chunk think EVERYTHING bad that happened during Dubya's tenure was Clinton's fault). Soo...once again our Presidential race is dominated by lying Republicans who offer NOTHING substantive nor specific, other than the failed 'policies' of God Reagan, to fix all the things they say Obama's broken. 'Trickle down, trickl'down, tax cuts, tax cuts, blah blah blah...'

And after watching them spend a fortune successfully destroying the character/war record of Silver Star earning war hero John Kerry (but one horrid lie that went against all their lying rhetoric about revering our military/soldiers), I expect them to succeed selling more of their failed policies and lies all the way to the White House...especially after their Supreme Court gave them the tools with 'Citizens United...'.

This writing has been written on the wall in green blazing lights for years. And now that train is getting closer to derailment, here come the liberals. Sen. Jonathan Dismang tried to get the Dems to cut their own pet projects and fund the shortage with surplus revenues this past session. But naturally, its better to build signs, preserve historic monuments and pave roads outside of wealthy donors houses in middle of no where Arkansas than to help the needy.

And here we are once again. Two roads diverged in a liberal wood. And they, they want the road that's taxed heavier. One question for the liberal though, on the last tax increase, where is that new fancy trauma center? Oh....what's that? It hasn't even broken ground yet. What.....why? Oh....because Beebe has been balancing the budget with that tax money instead of using it for what it was supposed to go for? Oh yes, let's raise taxes to help with the medicaid shortage. I'm sure it will all end up there. Good grief.
