Three days of night shooting have left me exhausted but enlightened. Finally home readjusting my chakras and lubricating my meridians with mandala visualizations and flutes of Dom Pérignon ‘98. So eclipsical!

I always carry light reading on location. Not some fiction about randy vampires (I work with enough real ones). This time an advance copy of "The New Geography of Jobs" by Enrico Moretti, in bookstores in mere days. Amazing.

Now, however, home again, realigned and eclipsed, I rush to my Razorbabies’ blog on this new morning to reimmerse myself in The Rock’s assorted dramas: roly-poly Mayors and assorted Good Ol’ Boys in Commerce and at Chambers of Commerce tragic-comically legislating further permanence of the 1% / 99% ratio; gigundosities like UAMS and UALR slicing off another handy big ol’ piece of pie for themselves and cutting out the poorer darker kids; still dealing with racism and desegregation like in that movie that time about Wind.

Frankly, my dears, I give a damn. Because I can’t help relating it all to Enrico Moretti’s “New Geography of Jobs.” He is SO right!

“Over the past half century, the United States has shifted from an economy centered on producing physical goods to one centered on innovation and knowledge. Jobs in the innovation sector have been growing disproportionately fast.”

We were shooting a chase sequence in an alley in the Valley, requiring lots of tedious setups involving wet pavement, crashes, explosions, and me with half my clothes torn off. Ample down time in between for multi-tasking through reading and education. (That or Texas Hold Em’ with the other cast.)

“The growing divergence of American communities is important not just in itself but because of what it means for American society. While the divide is first and foremost economic, it is now beginning to affect cultural identity, health, family stability, and even politics. The sorting of highly educated Americans into some communities and less educated American into others tends to magnify and exacerbate all other socioeconomic differences.”

My god, I’m thinking! Sounds EXACTLY like The Rock and so many other places. Because just last week they released those maps showing U.S. counties strongest and weakest in religion; those predominantly red or blue and becoming more so; and the riches and the poorest. You guessed it. There’s The Natural State! And there’s my beloved Big Apple and the City of Angels!

As Moretti says . . .

“. . . origins in the 1980s, when American cities started to be increasingly defined by their residents’ levels of education. Cities with many college-educated workers started attracting even more, and cities with a less educated workforce started losing ground.”

Ain’t it the truth, Razorbabies?

“America’s new economic map shows growing differences, not just between people but between communities. A handful of cities with the ‘right’ industries and a solid base of human capital keep attracting good employers and offering high wages, while those at the other extreme, cities with the ‘wrong’ industries and a limited human capital base, are stuck with dead-end jobs and low average wages.”

“Geographically, American workers are increasingly sorting along educational lines. At the same time that American communities are desegregating racially, they are becoming more segregated in terms of schooling and earnings.”

“Something deeper is going on. A worker’s education has an effect not just on his own salary but on the entire community around him. The presence of many college-educated residents changes the local economy in profound ways.”

Moretti goes on to outline possible solutions and examine probable futures but I don’t have time right now. My plate is full. Juggling too many balls. Pushing lots of envelopes. Going outside boxes. So it’s off to Pilates to fine-tune my instrument on this glorious new morn!

Razorbabies who read, get it! "The New Geography of Jobs" by Enrico Moretti.

(Remember those additional copies to share with the Chamber of Commerce, Dickson Flake, the Mayor, UAMS, UALR, et al.)
I never knew Ruth Carter, but read about her tumultuous, remarkable life in the obituary pages of yesterday’s paper. Here’s the gist of it:

Mrs. Carter got married right out of high school, circa late 1930s, and shortly after the birth of her youngest child, her husband just up and disappeared, never to be seen again.

She and her kids stayed in southwest Arkansas with her parents for awhile, and then — in search of a better life — the strong-willed woman and her little ones moved to Little Rock.

She went to business school. Learned accounting principles. Got a job and worked hard. By 1954, she was able to buy a little house on Maryland Ave. She choose the house because it was close to her church, grocery stores, and schools. One of which was UAMS. To which years later her two sons — both of whom became physicians — could walk to class.

Although Carter had plenty of challenges of her own, she was one of those people who, no matter what, looked after others in need. Like in 1982 when her daughter died of cancer, leaving four young children: Carter took the kids into her small house and raised them.

As if that and her mostly freelance accounting jobs were not enough during those years, she also became primary caregiver for a friend who was ill and alone. Every day for the last seven years of his life, she prepared breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the man and fed him at his house. “She was just driven to help other people, her heart was that big,” her grandson said.

Carter, who worked until she was 87 or so, could help herself, too. Earlier this month at age 92, she went on Little Rock television urging city officials not to bulldoze her house for a technology park. The house she’d lived in for 58 years. Where she’d raised her children and grandchildren. And where she’d prepared all those meals for her sick friend.

In a flier protesting her neighborhood as one of the proposed locations for the park, Mrs. Carter wrote: “It would be hard for anyone to imagine the joys and the sorrows I have experienced in this house from 1954 until 2012 . . . I am too old to even think about having to move and to see my home torn down!”

Mrs. Carter died of heart failure in that very house Tuesday of last week. As fate would have it, there was an announcement the next day proposing changes in some of the boundary lines; changes that would remove her home from the area being considered for the technology park.

Mrs. Carter’s son told the ArkD-G’s Aprille Hanson that his mother — who had a “Not for Sale” sign on her property — wasn’t somebody who’d consider herself a community activist, but that she’d be “proud” and “very happy” to know her home was spared.

Ruth Carter’s story has given me even more appreciation for the struggles faced by some of the people living in the neighborhoods that could be taken for the technology park. My fingers are crossed for those who want to continue living — and maybe even like Mrs. Carter — die where they are.
It's hard to say what/where state Rep Bell comes from. His state Rep site, last I looked, posted NO educational achievements whatsoever.

It's fertile ground for Cato to explore seeing as how they're from the same area.
Be interesting to see if Bell graduated from high school.
Since President Obama's Harvard transcript seems so important to wingnuts maybe it's time we began demanding transcripts from each of them.

Go, Ron Paul, go! At least the military would be cut back to a reasonable level and subsidities (business socialism) would cease. Not really, he wouldn't get any more cooperation from the Republicans than President Obama. I am sure that McConnell will be pushing to make him a 1-term president so the Republicans in the Senate will be less useful than they have been this year (there are negative numbers!).

eLwood, the only totally documented evidence of voter fraud to back-stop the Republican concern occurred this year in three Republican primaries, especially Iowa, where they have no idea who actually won and declared a tie between "Ribberman" Romney and "Pope Rick I" Santorium because they "lost" the votes from not 1, but 3, counties. Bell is right as his party has a record of doing it and even admitted on the news that they couldn't tell who won Iowa since they "lost" the votes.

Maybe, Bell needs to spend more time contemplating his navel! It would be more useful to the discussion than the lies he continues to spout. Isn't this also the "repay scholarship" twerp? Is he the product of a recognized state college or some private religious school?? He doesn't come acrioss as too well educated (I guess he is a lawyer??).

How could anyone have known that those cop killers were dangerous? EVERYONE I know has bought an AK47 for cash at a gun show in Arizona.

That's also what all the Mexican drug lords on Emily's List highly recommend -- and who would know better than someone who makes their living by shooting people?

To those professional killers, it's not about the price. It's the customer service, lack of record-keeping, and the friendly NRA environment that keeps them coming back for more.

Republicans in the House get honest about their need for dishonesty. Really. They're now making it official to use propaganda and false information on the public.
"The new law would give sweeping powers to the State Department and Pentagon to push television, radio, newspaper, and social media onto the U.S. public. “It removes the protection for Americans,” says a Pentagon official who is concerned about the law. “It removes oversight from the people who want to put out this information. There are no checks and balances. No one knows if the information is accurate, partially accurate, or entirely false.”
State Rep. Nate Bell Continues to Mislead, Falsify Facts

(LITTLE ROCK) In another attempt to distract voters from the issues, Republican State Representative Nate Bell continued his pattern of falsifying facts for his own political gain, turning his attention this weekend to mislead Arkansans on restrictive laws that have kept veterans, minorities, women, religious workers, and even former members of Congress from lawfully casting their vote.

“Representative Bell continues to outright falsify facts and mislead Arkansans,” Candace Martin, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Arkansas said. “After he misquoted Adolph Hitler to make a comparison that Democrats were like Nazis, one would think that Bell would take more care in choosing his words and be honest with the voters on the issues, but his latest comments show that Bell has no interest in being honest with Arkansans.”

Representative Bell tweeted over the weekend of the “talk about ‘hypothetical’ voters ‘potentially’ being disenfranchised by ID requirements. Where are the documented cases?”

Has Bell-ringer or any other Ark Repub shown evidence that voter fraud exists in Ark due to a lack of photo-ID?
