I just found this great quote from FDR in the comment section of Our Mister Brooks' latest edition of watery gruel, revisionist history which passes for an op-ed column.

"Let me warn the nation against the smooth evasion which says, 'Of course we believe all these things; we believe in Social Security; we believe in work for the unemployed; we believe in saving homes. Cross our hearts and hope to die, we believe in all these things; but we do not like the way the present administration is doing them. Just turn them over to us. We will do all of them–we will do more of them–we will do them better; and, most important of all, the doing of them will not cost anybody anything.' "

–Franklin Roosevelt, 1936

I worry that the electorate will fall for the siren song of "something for nothing." Americans have always been a sucker for that.

Saline, why would you quote scripture to eLwood, of all people, to try to win your argument? There are also many Christians who don't believe the Bible is literal and inerrant----probably more of them than there are of you.

You think it is a good idea for the very few females who get pregnant as a result of rape or incest to carry the fetus to term. Two wrongs don't make a right or something. That is not a just and loving god that I could ever worship.

Why do you take antibiotics when you have an infection? That is interfering with the natural order of things and not accepting God's will. Maybe God wants you dead that's why you were struck with a deadly infection.

You presume to know the mind of God in all things. I can't believe your hubris. You are willing to take your "understanding" of an ancient text and use it to force that understanding on everyone else---even those whose understanding of it is different from yours. That is dangerous territory.

Elwood, I disagree with your assertion that you are not a person according to the Bible until you are born. I mention your view on my bloghttp://thedailyhatch.org/2012/05/25/hank-hanegraaff-on-the-issue-of-abortion-part-1/ Check out Psalms 139. Hank Hanegraaff clears up this type of thinking below:

Another biblical pretext, typically referred to as the “argument from breath,” involves Genesis 2:7: “The Lord God formed man from dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being.”

The “argument from breath” is frequently presented in the following manner: God did not consider Adam to be a “living soul” until He had breathed the “breath of life” into him. Thus a child does not become a human being until he or she begins to breathe.

Dispensing with this argument is a simple matter. Adam was inanimate before God breathed the breath of life into him. Conversely, as science demonstrates, the conceptus or preborn child is alive from the very moment of conception. It is important to note that the breath of life exists in the preborn child from the moment of conception. In reality, it is the form, not the fact, of oxygen transfer (breath) that changes at birth.

You know saline, I'm sure you believe that since you've twisted the scripture to fit your political agenda. If you check the Bible a "person" didn't exist until he/she reached one month of age. In more than one Biblical instance the Hebrew god ordered the killing of unborns. So don't use the Bible to justify your political agenda.

Max you are a Christian man and I wanted to pass on a scripture.
"Rescue those being taken off to death, and save those stumbling toward slaughter" (Proverbs 24:11). We should be actively involved in politics to protect the lives of unborn children.

Dr. Hymie Gordon (Mayo Clinic): “By all criteria of modern molecular biology, life is present from the moment of conception.”

Dr. Micheline Matthews-Roth (Harvard University Medical School): “It is scientifically correct to say that an individual human life begins at conception.”

Dr. Alfred Bongioanni (University of Pennsylvania): “I have learned from my earliest medical education that human life begins at the time of conception.”

Dr. Jerome LeJeune, “the Father of Modern Genetics” (University of Descartes, Paris): “To accept the fact that after fertilization has taken place a new human has come into being is no longer a matter of taste or opinion . . . it is plain experimental evidence.”
Keep holding on, Kizzy! We'll know next month if the Supreme Court is going to kill the advances Obama made. If they do let's make a pact to hold hands and jump off the bridge of your choice. If they don't, more help is on the way especially if Obama wins a 2nd term in November....no wait, ONLY if Obama wins a 2nd term in November.

Maybe our resident lawyers can chip in some advice, but I think it would be wise to get your name off all the property & cars now to protect your family in case your health goes south in a hurry. Remember I had to divorce my 1st wife when her good Blue Cross & Blue Shield was about to max out in order for her to be eligible for SSI insurance.

Fortunately by that point she wasn't fully aware of what was going on, so I was the sad one and it still upsets me over 30 years later. But it's what had to be done or they would have thrown her out in the street and we would have had to treat her terminal brain tumor with sweet sweet prayers to Jesus or burnt chicken bones.....goddamn it. SSI allowed her to die in a hospital like good people are supposed to be able to do. Hang in there girl!

I'll follow up what Roland is saying by presenting these facts:

I lost my Tom's Of New Jersey health insurance in 1993 when I was diagnosed with hemochromatosis, the inability of my body to get rid of excess iron. It's pretty common stuff, I got it from my parents.

Without health insurance I had to pay 59 dollars each time I had my blood drawn off until my iron levels became normal. This is the same procedure I could have had done at any blood bank for free, plus I would have gotten juice & cookies. Plus my O negative blood could have helped any sick person. At the time it was illegal to give my blood to sick folks.

Around 2001 I had to have this treatment again and by then the cost had gone up to 363 bucks per blood draw and legislation had passed that allowed my blood to be drawn for free at a blood bank & given to sick people, but my doctor apparently wanted me to pay Cooper Clinic, not get this done for free and save lives. Still no health insurance for me.

In 2002 my blood specialist at Cooper Clinic finally decided to test my blood for excess sugar and found I had type 2 diabetes to the max. By then my nice white teeth had crumbled, my penis was blinky & my eyesight was failing. Still no ability to buy health insurance.

I fixed myself for other ailments many a time by visiting the Farmer's Co-op buying animal antibiotics. Other times I just sat at home and toughed it out. We got the kids on AR Kids and each saw a doctor 1 time each....thank Allah for healthy breast-fed kids!

In 2007 or 8 I managed to get access to our local charity clinic even though mag and I made 7000 more per year than was allowed. I only joined to be able to continue to get my diabetic meds. The director was a pal and snuck me in.

In 2010 I thought I had the flu but it turned out to be Tick Fever. An old doctor at the charity clinic diagnosed it after I managed to pull myself thru the door before I collapsed. If I had had health insurance he would have put me in the hospital, instead I spent 2 weeks in bed at home out of my head...but by god I made it!

About 7 months ago thanks to Obama-Romneycare I was allowed to pay 300 a month and purchase health insurance for the first time in 19 years. I get to go see a real doctor! Unfortunately now I'm on insulin that I shoot in my belly 4 to 6 times per day. I've had dentures for years, Mr. Penis is way blinky, my feet & legs hurt like hell day and night and some days I have trouble walking.

My new so-so insurance pays 30 dollars of the 274 dollars my Norvo Nordisk Flex-pens cost. Pays nothing for the 72 dollars per month I must spend on test strips, but I can go to bed at night reasonably sure that if a tumor pops up mag won't have to live under the bridge.

My life isn't very important, I'm just an average guy, but it's a damn shame I'm semi-ruined at 56 and probably won't see 70. It's also a damn shame at some point in the future my illnesses will overrun my so-so insurance and I'll wind up costing you all a lot of money. Maybe Medicare will still be around in 8 years assuming I'm still around in 8 years? My inability to get the health care I needed for almost 20 years is still going to cost you all a bunch unless I step in front of a bus. Sorry about that, I did the best I could in a man-made bad situation. If the Supreme Court kills Obama-Romneycare I don't know where I'll be? And ultimately, where will you be?
I agree with DBI's post. The Kochs and their ilk have no idea of what their unleashing by churning up people's rage in this country. Sadly, they don't understand that once that rage is unleashed it will be beyond their control. Folks the Civil War was one bloody, and messy period in our history.

DBI is a modern-day prophet. He ought to be governor.

Now, just to clear up another misconception in the thread:

In our for-profit health care system, a life is worth exactly as much as the profit it represents to the companies supplying the health care market.

For example, a child whose parents do not have health insurance is 60%-100% more likely to die of a given condition than one whose parents can afford insurance.

A for-profit health care system, with care dispensed according to patient wealth, is a clear conservative principle. Why should unborn children be an exception to it?

If a child can die AFTER it is born because of poverty, why the concern about children who die BEFORE they are born because of poverty?

That disconnection is exactly why the war on abortion is seen by most Americans for what it is - a war on women, by the modern American Taliban.

I have spent the last 7 months reading newspapers from the left side of the state on microfilm starting with the year 1859. I didn't just read every 10th paper, I've read them all up to about 1872 and brothers & sisters we are living in those exact times once again.

The bitching started with the pro-slavery crowd even though at the time only 6% of Arkansas' population owned slaves. As the rhetoric ratcheted up so did the pro-slavery-anti-Federal government bills introduced in our legislature. The violence of neighbor on neighbor swelled too and BANG out of the blue the Civil War started even taking those who had been yacking endlessly by surprise. Voting mattered before, but actually it was bad voting after the Civil War that devastated Arkansas until the 1880s.

Reading in 1860 & 1861 I see people on both sides talking big talk about their God given individual rights, claiming to want war if that's what it took to "get their country back." I feel so sorry for them because not a single one of the experts had a clue of the misery they were wishing upon themselves. They had no idea of how horrible it was to be, no idea of the bloodshed or the personal fortunes lost or the lasting-ness of a decade of crushing poverty with little hope for better times.

After the war Powell Clayton (the Scott Walker of 1868) came to power in Arkansas and possessing all the marbles declared war on anyone who had been connected, even in thought, with the Confederacy. Those Republicans not only took out their revenge, what actually motivated them was the riches to be had by disenfranchising the Democrats, taking their homes, their businesses, their farms. Clayton declared war on the Klu Klux Klan which might have been fine if they hadn't taken the opportunity to kill any former southern sympathizer (read Democrat) they ran across in the year 1868. (talk about lasting voter suppression!)

I'm telling you....we don't want what's coming right at us today. Arkansas' 6 representatives to Congress are too stupid to read history so they'll gladly help us right over the damn cliff. As there was no way to stop the idiots of 1861, we're fairly powerless to stop the 2012 idiots...they won't listen to reason and most think if war breaks out they'll go unscathed...and good luck with that, boys.

We must throw out these modern Powell Claytons before the shooting starts. If you don't believe me, head to your local library...they have microfilm to read....go way back and look at our future if you dare.

“I do not understand the cost-benefit here,” Will said. “The costs are clear. The benefits – what voter is going to vote for him because he’s seen with Donald Trump? The cost of appearing with this bloviating ignoramus is obvious, it seems to me. Donald Trump is redundant evidence that if your net worth is high enough, your IQ can be very low, and you can still intrude into American politics.”
As someone over there said, this is how it all began with Charles Johnson at LittleGreenFootballs. He saw the light and was drummed out of polite (that is meant as a joke) conservative company. Maybe the door to Will's brain is ajar enough to let a little light shine in.
eL, I clinked that link. I see Koch industries had 67,000 employees in 2010. The percentage change in employees for the last year is -9.5%. That's a minus. So much for the jobs creators. They can't create jobs without demand.

That's 6,365 jobs lost. How many more jobs were lost because of those Koch industry jobs? How many houses went into foreclosure? How many people no longer have health insurance and have untreated problems like diabetes, etc.

You can be sure Charles and David are still employing little brown skinned folks to do their crap work for them, so there's that. You can be sure that they are sitill living in their multiple mansions. You can be sure that they are buying the very best medical care for themselves.

You can be sure they are spending multi-millions to influence elections and buy legislators to do their bidding. There is not enough money in the world to fill up the hollowness in their souls.
