You can brew some bottles of Better Boys or roma.

Elwood…they do indeed still make a Cynthiana wine.
The Cynthiana grape, which some people call a Norton, is native to Arkansas and is now our state grape, thanks to some fierce lobbying a few years ago by Ms. Audrey House, owner of Chateau Aux Arc in Altus. If you haven’t visited her vineyard and tasting room, I highly recommend it, especially when she has a wine tasting event or brings in a chef to do food and wine pairings. Lovely place. New, compared to Post and Weiderkehrs, but it has a special charm.
We bought our infant Cynthiana vines from her 5 years ago.

Oh my. Why didn't you say so! I think I have a new mountaingirlfriend.
Love that variety.

Does Weidiker (sp) still make a Cynthiana? I used to buy it by the case when I drove thru Altus. Can't find it up here. One fellow outside of Fayetteville used to have Cynthiana vines and we would gather a few bushels and take our best shot making the stuff. Never really good but drinkable.

Didn't make the Brummett v Collins debate because sweetie lost a relative last night and lost a close friend with who she had worked for a few years. Her friend just went home and fell over. GOLFER AT THE DENTIST
A man and his wife walked into a dentist's office. The man said to the dentist, "Doc, I'm in one heck of a hurry I have two buddies sitting out in my car waiting for us to go play golf, so forget about the anesthetic, I don't have time for the gums to get numb. I just want you to pull the tooth, and be done with it! We have a 10:00 AM tee time at the best golf course in town and it's 9:30 already... I don't have time to wait for the anesthetic to work!'
The dentist thought to himself, "My goodness, this is surely a very brave man asking to have his tooth pulled without using anything to kill the pain." So the dentist asks him, "Which tooth is it, sir?"
The man turned to his wife and said,
"Open your mouth, Honey, and show him........"
In the same vein of the best of our Arkansas legislators, the North Carolina legislators have solved the issue of global warning and the projected 1- meter sea level rise affecting coastal areas by the end of the century by legislastive fiat. They have written a law that does not allow the state's own NC Coastal Resources Commission to develop needed data to protect its coast line by initiating a law that says:

“These rates shall only be determined using historical data, and these data shall be limited to the time period following the year 1900. Rates of seas-level rise may be extrapolated linearly. …” .

Unfortunately, the increases in sea level have been exponential but the state won't allow the measurements. This is the same as predicting the impact of a hurricane on an area by reviewing the weather in the same area for the PRIOR two weeks. Lots of data and totally useless as information.

http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/plugge…

Outlier…..as usual, I admire your bravery. I must admit, I am frightened of snakes. You said exactly what a man told me last week. He said it isn’t the snake itself that friehtens him, it is the unexpected appearance of a snake that frightens him. Me, I’m just scared of all of it.

And the fires in New Mexico are indeed heartbreaking. I feel the same sorrow when they occur each summer in the beautiful mountain areas of California. I have been out there during those fires when ash is so thick in the air you can see it and feel it, miles from the actual fire itself.

Yossarian…..the vineyard is my husband’s baby, but I am the fulltime nanny! It is something he had dreamed of and talked about for years as we would travel the wine country in Italy and France. After we moved back to Arkansas a few years ago, he finally put those thoughts and dreams into action and built his own. Not being too farsighted, I encouraged the venture. It took me less than a year to realize while he is traveling the world with his pro baseball job, I would be the one to nurse the vines through their tender early years. They are established now, but still require a lot of work, especially when we go long periods with no rain or when the heat is beyond the comfort level of their native California. But it is a labor of love……….although a dirty sweaty one!
Jim, thanks for the reassurance. I appreciate your thoughts.
I am about 1000 feet up, surrounded by the Ouachita National Forest. I see a lot of wildlife up here but never have I seen a mountain lion or panther. But there were some pretty credible people on here the other night with stories about their existence, so it has caused me to look into the woods a little more cautiously.
If they are here, it was their home before it was mine, so I will try to respect that.
MG, My garden is not any near being close to your magnitude - Besides my veggie plot, I've got 6 grape vines, a dozen or so of other berry vines (thank you, UofA Aggies for the thornless blackberry strains), and a handful of fruit trees. Enough for an urban hermit to make a coupla gallons of wine and a summer's supply of fruit popsicles.

The biggest threats I deal with are drive-by fruit thieves who jump out of their cars and strip my fruit trees and drive off, feral city cats the size of dogs, and the code enforcer who doesn't know the difference between lawn weeds and veggie plantings. The only panther I've seen was when I was living in Oakland.

Don't fear the lions and bear, Mountaingirl. They are more frightened of you! Last week there was a five foot blacksnake right next to my house. I watched him (her?) as he went on his way. They are so beautiful when moving. At my book club later in the week when I mentioned it, I was shocked when someone asked if I killed it. I said why would I kill it. I'm inclined to leave the copperheads alone as well, as long as they leave me alone.

I'm not afraid of snakes, although they sometimes startle me. I'm more afraid of chiggers and ticks! I understand there is quite a bit of tick fever going around.

And Jim, I recall reading about a bear in Springdale just a few years back. They pass regularly through Albuquerque yards on their way to the Rio Grande when foraging is poor in the mountains. Friends who live out in the sticks way south of Berryville report mountain lion sightings.

Speaking of Albuquerque, my beloved NM is burning. A fire had reached 170,000 acres in size in the Gila National Forest yesterday. I haven't looked in on it today. That is the largest wild fire on record in NM. I feel for all the critters who are killed or maimed.

Mountaingirl, the tales of panthers and mountain lions are just that--tales. There has not been a verified panther sighting in years and years. You might be able to find a mountain lion or two deep in the Ozark National Forest.

And, by the way, let me add my appreciation tp the Arkansas Blog. If it weren't for the Blog, I wouldn't be able to talk to anyone but Republicans. (Well, maybe, a half-dozen or so others.)

Yosarrian….your gardening thoughts bring to mind my own plight.

We have a vineyard…about an acre which is small by commercial standards, but large by backyard standards. We have Cabernet, Chardonnay and Cynthiana vines. The vines for the state grape came from Altus. The other two varieties came from Napa Valley.

This venture has given me a new appreciation for what farmers do each year, living and dying by the whims of nature. Forces they cannot control, control their destiny.

Last year, the part of our crop that wasn’t killed by consecutive days of torrential downpour was killed later in the summer by consecutive days of 100+ temperatures. It was heartbreaking to cut each dead or dying cluster by hand, mourning a year’s worth of labor and beautiful fruit lost.

From this I learned I do not have the fortitude and conviction it takes to do this sort of thing for a living. My heart is not strong enough. But a newfound respect was formed for those who do.

The young grapes are off to a hardy start this year. I tend them every evening when the sun is beginning to go down and their drinking water doesn’t evaporate so quickly.

However, all of those tales here a few days ago about panthers and mountain lions lurking in the Arkansas woods have me a little spooked. I find myself looking over my shoulder to the surrounding forest a little more frequently , hoping I don’t see something looking back. I have always know the deer and bear are there and we have developed a mutual understanding. But, I haven’t made any deals with cats the size of me and I would prefer not to.
