I am the one that provided the "Unconfirmed Quote List" of David Barton to Rob Boston in 1996 and I told Boston that this list demonstrates that Barton is trying to raise the level of scholarship to where people are encouraged to use only quotes that have primary sources and not secondary sources. As a result of getting the list Rob Boston wrote the 1996 article "Consumer Alert" that implies that Boston made up these quotes. Over the next few years Boston never apologized although he admitted in 2009 that he knew Barton did not make them up.

My effort to get Boston to apologize including getting several board members of Americans United to confront Boston about his misleading article and one board member was so concerned that he visited with me on the phone countless times and helped me write a paper to be submitted for publication as a response in the Church and State Magazine, but Barry Lynn (who I spoke to also) later declined to publish it. http://thedailyhatch.org/2012/06/18/did-da…

Google the phrase " David Barton fabricated quotes" and you will get many websites that claim this is true and Rob Boston's 1996 article "consumer alert" in the Church and State Magazine is what prompted this reaction throughout the country. As a journalist you would think people like Max would call Boston out on this. An apology should have been issued by Boston years ago.

Hold onto your old history books. They have amazing stuff. I found a set of 1921 Collier's encyclopedia in my attic. They tell how the Turks sent the Armenians into the dessert (in 1915, I think) in graphic detail. Something the US Government has never completely acknowledged.

Speaking of re-writing history, James Rosen, a Faux News executive, is on CSPAN now whitewashing John Mitchell and the Watergate felons. He is also whining that John Dean has been mean to him with "menacing" threats of law suits. I think I just heard him say that the deaths of 3,000 on September 11th was worse than Watergate---apples and oranges? You decide.

Earlier, that gamblin' man who likes to lecture us about values and morals was on spewing his right wing bull shit about education. That would be Bill Bennet. He was President Reagan's Secretary of Education. I think anyone who understands so little about the odds in casino gambling to the point of losing 7 or 8 million dollars isn't smart enough to have anything to do with education

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/…

A more suitable position was as Bush père's Director of the National Drug Control Policy since he has first hand knowledge of addictions.

I can say with almost certainty that Bennett never had to pay for meals, hotel rooms, drinks or anything else his little black heart desired. Casino owners love high rolling losers like him and the comps just keep coming as long as they are at the tables.

Barton is sorta Rushdoony-lite. He has spoken to Christian Identity groups who are Holocaust deniers. I don't know how deep his association with those groups goes. You are known by the company you keep.

Saline can never admit he is wrong about any of the bull shit he peddles here. His mind is closed to rational argument. His time spent on this blog is a waste for him and arguing with him is a waste of time for us.

He is so obtuse, he can't see that a xtian theocracy would be as dangerous to him as it would be to the rest of us. There will always be usurpers, Saline---people who would find your interpretation of the historical and biblical texts in error and not pure enough. Your best protection from the purity police are people like Yossarian and I who will let you practice your beliefs as long as you don't force them on the rest of society.

I just wasted 10 minutes of my life that I will never get back. Maybe someone less rigid in their thinking will benefit from it.

I just checked out Barton's wiki page and he contends that Keith Ellison is not our first Muslim congressman. He cites an expression of sympathy that John Randolph of 19th Century Virginia wrote about Arab Muslims during the xtian crusades as proof. That's the kind of "impeccable" scholarship that Barton practices. Barton pals around with Glenn "vicks will make you cry" Beck. He will never out-charlatan Beck, but it won't be for lack of trying.

David Barton excels in writing about how he thinks things should have been, not how they really were. Barton is careful to include just enough of the historically accepted facts so that his version at least sounds plausible and he cannot be dismissed as a complete fabricator. Since Barton's version of "the facts" also fits in with what a lot of people in the Republican Party actually believe, it becomes easy for them to blindly buy into Barton's BS-hook, line and sinker.

Barton is also the one who has helped revise the state school standards for history so that they have no resemblance to reality which may be good for other states when competing for the same college slots. And his "standards" don't apply to university professors who aren't usually bought off that easy or to even high school teachers with any ethics at all.

Don't ever overlook that David Barton was Vice-Chairman of the Texas Republican Party.

I cannot say if Weems and Wirt had a well-defined agenda but Barton's is clear.

Deathbyinches wrote, "They'd rather cut & paste what someone else wrote 58 years ago or do like Barton and just make it up." If you google David Barton then several sites come up accusing him of making up quotes and attributing them to the founding fathers. This has never occurred. Check out this link:
http://www.publiceye.org/ifas/fw/9705/quot…

Actually Barton has researched quotes of the founding fathers and come up with an "Unconfirmed Quote List" where he recommends not using quotes unless they have primary sources.

Barton's research concerning these unconfirmed quotes has brought nods of approval from both religious and secular arenas. Professor John George commented, "While not agreeing with Barton concerning separation of church and state, I must say he has done everyone a service by circulating the 'Unconfirmed Quote List.' Especially gratifying is his encouraging those in his own ... camp to cite only primary sources for the quotes they utilize. Unfortunately, a sizable minority will ignore the advice."

That was exactly my thought, DBI.

For a group who spend a lot of time quoting Stalin and comparing Obama to him, the Tea Party sure does use a lot of Josef's tactics, with rewriting history and using the BIG lie at the top of the list.

And we have the purge of intellectuals, liberals, gays and other minorities to look forward to if they ever get power.

People who are out to takeover a country have many methods and one of them is to muddy up a country's history. The USSR was a master of it and today's Russia is busy rewriting the facts of Stalin's life trying to spruce him up for a new generation.

This Barton feller would make the Russians proud. Unfortunately, most Americans don't give a damn about history, that's why Fox News can dupe them into easily repeating our past mistakes for the profit of the 1%. I've recently found out for the first time how to ferret out real historical facts and it's hard hard work that most people won't mess with. They'd rather cut & paste what someone else wrote 58 years ago or do like Barton and just make it up. Either way the real facts get lost or molded into a message that serves the fake historian with an agenda.

We don't have to go back 200 years to get confused. Huckabee revisionist history serves as a good model. If everyone knew what a rotten guy Huck was & is, he'd have trouble getting a job at McDonalds. We just had a weeks worth of praise for Jennings Osborne though next to no one brought up the many thousands of dollars Jennings heaped on Huck's head over 12 years. Was that just a man-crush or something more sinister? We'll never know because Huckabee is too unimportant to ever deserve a real biography. One would think a 12 year crime spree covering an entire state would make him worthy of a historical investigation, but I guess not.
I just listened to Stewart's 3 part interview with Huckabee as I had not heard it before. In part 3, the Huckster cites Andres Serrano's "Piss Christ" as an example of how Christians are "persecuted" in this country.

No Mike, it was a mirror that Serrano held up for you to really see yourself. Huck went on to say how the Koran-burning pastor was ostracized and Serrano was not. "Piss Christ" was about how Christian symbols are cheapened and commercialized for the sake of more money and self-aggrandizement. Serrano was telling some Christians that their spirituality is in the toilet.

Max, David Burton is just a modern Parson Weems and William Wirt. You know those historical facts about "give me liberty or give me death" and chopping down the cherry tree and praying at Valley Forge. Myths and legends are all part of a nation's history. After all, we all know the mighty General George Armstrong Custer was the last to fall at Little Big Horn after shooting and waving his sabre in the air at all those injuns. Right?
