Somewhat related to Norma's post about Mitch Daniels' appointment to head Purdue---by a board of directors appointed by him---is this story about UVA. There's lots of skulduggery in this story about the ouster of a university president who didn't share some board members' belief that a university should be run like a Fortune 500 business.

One department head says"What's happening at other kinds of institutions around the country is now coming home to roost in higher education."

Quite a few years ago, I read some hand wringing about corporate control of higher ed. because so many colleges and universities are dependent on corporations for research grant money. The money does not arrive without strings attached.
Nor could it GET more thrilling than Mary Ann's win for "Last Shot with Judge Gunn" at tonight's Daytime Emmy Awards!

The Darlenes were all rooting for her and I waved every time I got near a camera!

Caught up with many old friends at the Beverly Hilton.

None older than Barbara Walters, looking recently refreshed. The question at our table was exactly what's the cutoff age for further work? One knowledgeable beauty (66 but still plays 45 on a soap) authoritatively offered, "Eighty-five. Janet de Cordova. 'Course, it was in Mexico. Where she lived as the guest of her former maid and housekeeper after Freddie died. They'll do anything in Mexico."

No one knew who Mary Ann Gunn was or had seen her show, forestalling their sharing in her moment of glory as fully as I, familiar as I am with the REAL heartbreak behind the robes and smile: a mousy nobody coming from nothing by way of Fayetteville, Arkansas; barred from practicing there; now embraced by the warm and eager hearts of Hollywood, at least that segment of Tinseltown largely unfollowed by paparazzi because more suited to syndicated daytime reality strips on TV than Big Screen status; strutting and fretting her radiant hour upon the stage in triumph with her award-winning first show!

The mouse that roared!

Mary Ann, too, looked suspiciously refreshed compared to the woman I met in Burbank last fall. That southern California air and climate!

Janet de Cordova died five years after her last lift, whatshername somberly related, prompted by her considered perception that we cared, and cared deeply.
