The tale of Wal-Mart and the elderly greeter -- sad story in so many ways:
Someone so intent on having a wonderful Christmas at her house, she apparently shoved an old lady;
Wal-Mart not taking into account the employee's lengthy service and any possible extenuating circumstances;
Wal-Mart not showing the tape of the whole incident rather than screen grabs;
The employee not paying off or paying down her mortgage -- and putting some money aside -- rather than spiffing up her house with the $50,000 she got when Wal-Mart ended their profit sharing plan a few years ago.
All this aside, the worst thing I think Wal-Mart has done to its employees -- and perhaps eventually to themselves -- is to end that profit sharing plan. Bet they didn't eliminate stock options for managerial and executive types. Probably increased that.
A pox on Wal-Mart.
Yeah, I still shop there -- some -- but I've trimmed it down to about a month between trips when I stock up on a few items I can only find there, or can find substantially cheaper there. Truth be told, if the cats were a bit less persnickety about their litter, I could probably eliminate Wal-Mart shopping altogether.

      @joeburris:
A six-figure salary doesn't necessarily put someone into the ranks of the 1%. This article in the NY Times breaks it down for you: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/10… and shows that to be in the 1% an income of $386,000 is the least an American one-percenter makes. And that doesn't even touch the $2,000,000 it takes to be a 0.1 percenter, or the $11,000,000 it requires to be in the 0.01%.

To put things in perspective, half of the world's one-percenters live in the US - because it only takes $40,000 to make the cut worldwide. http://money.cnn.com/2012/01/04/news/econo…
Hey Sister….good to hear from you tonight.

Congratulations on the upcoming nuptials. This is an exciting time for us all and I am thrilled this day draws near.

As for the dress…..last time I sent you a dress suggestion, I think your reply was “I don’t think I can carry that off”. But good news! My sister-in-law and I are now in the (long) process of looking (and looking) for a wedding dress for my niece, so my wedding dress shopping skills have improved greatly since I suggested the short poufy thing for you last year. We go most weekends and you would be welcome to join us as we sit in bridal shops around the country as ladies bring out 20-50 dresses for us to look at and then narrow down to about 10-15 to try on. We then narrow down to 2-3, make a record of them, and go on to the next place. I keep telling my precious niece she will know it is THE dress when she has it on. So far, we haven’t found it yet. But I know it is out there and we will look until we find it.

You would be welcome to come along and we could all help find one for you too. But you better do it soon. Her second wedding dress (yes, there are two dresss) we ordered last month will be ready in late September. The big first dress may take somewhat longer. So the clock is ticking.

But you are so precious with that southern belle thing going on. You will look beautiful no matter what you decide. But if you do need an extra pair of eyes when you go shopping, I know any of us Blog Girls will be happy to assist.

And I will buy the drinks!

      Well, it's officially wedding month.

We're going to the beach between now and then with the young Ls, so I doubt I'll give it too much thought (wink). It's not like we're writing our vows or anything. We'll be going to the courthouse and will be hitched by the Justice of the Peace. It's the E-Z Mart of nuptials.

Well, I do need to figure out what to wear between now and then. In a low-key situation such as this, it would be nice if we looked half-decent for the requisite photo we'll be looking at for the rest of our lives. I want to wear a tasteful skirt, blouse & pumps, but WBW would drop dead before she wore something that resembled a dress (although she did promise to do that very thing at the funeral for one/both of my parents).

Don't get me wrong, she's not averse to looking feminine. Actually, she's a real hottie when I can coax her to bathe every other day and put on a little mascara. Oh, I kid. Let's just say she's more the "outdoor, tomboy type'' and feels most comfortable caked in dirt.

What to wear? I probably need some pointers from Norma. Though I'll probably wing it at the last minute, it would be nice to get some helpful hints from the fashionable hetero women on the blog (like Norma, MG, NVR, HHW, Nanc, Kizzy, et al).

But I do have to admit to my blog friends I'm getting a tad nervous. Even writing that makes me a little uneasy. It's not cold feat by any means; this is the woman for me, although we are as different as night and day.

When I say "I do'' I intend it to mean forever. I'm not the easiest person to live with and nor is she. We've been together for 7 years and we're not kids anymore. We're closer to menopause than we are to being the irresponsible schmucks we were in our 20s.

These vows won't mean a damn thing legally because we don't live in Connecticut and Bill Clinton's DOMA is still law of the land.

But, the vows do mean something to us. And, that's why I'm getting nervous (she won't verbalize it but I know it's affecting her the same way too).

Until then, I'll do my best Scarlett O'Hara and worry about it tomorrow. After all, tomorrow is another day.

Hugs to all my blog buddies,

"One side believes that a civilized country should provide health care for all its citizens, even if that means a shared payment. The other side doesn't believe in a shared obligation to universal care."

Which side would that be, Greens?

Both D vs R sides believe in denying tens of millions health care... while insisting the rest pay double to triple the next highest in the known universe.

Just the fact you want to promote/pen articles on business/corporations rather than human beings days after this decision says so much. There is simply no way dropping two words (over 65) from the original Medicare bill wouldn't have been a huge relief and significant savings for the overwhelming majority of human beings and business in this country.

Only the outsiders/ third sides can claim to be for saving money and providing care for all. For the two sides both demanded it never be considered, or waged apologencia warfare in order to help a neoliberal out...much less fought for and passed Medicare for all... which could have been done with 50 Senate Dems plus Biden as a tie breaker a couple of years ago... in no time at all.

This several year old link really paints a clear historic (150 year) picture of just how two-faced Democrats have always been.
http://polizeros.com/avocado-declaration/

To sit here post ACA Supreme decision, where so-called liberals from the oval to congress to the supreme court to their cheerleading press squad voted in unanimity to do the wrong thing and just one Republican Supreme had to sully themselves to help you sink your own ship.. To sit here and read Democrats claim Single Payer is the right thing to do is to watch them stab good intent in the back. Again! You were never for single payer or universal care beyond enjoying the way it sounds at pearl-clutching times like this - when it's an impossibility for awhile, thanks to you far more than Republicans. Because at least they never lied in this respect, they just waited until you passed it for them.. You are merely saying single payer or universal care to falsely protect your aristocratic neoliberal party.

Of course aristocratic liberal supreme judges are going to meet republicans in agreement that a tax as nothing but a penalty is a fine way to manipulate people... especially if it protects the rich profit stream... even if it keeps tens of millions bankrupt or without care. And they likely just left the commerce clause in worse shape than it was before these bad questions were forced by Democrats.

The liberal legislators and supremes just took tax as punishment to a whole new level. If I don't buy a corporate for profit product at whatever price, whatever bad fine print deal they say... I now pay a government enforced penalty. When providing care for all is much, much cheaper.... much less bureaucratic, much more humane in every possible sense.

And don't tell us new regulations are in place... because we all know both parties never regulate their true owners anymore. ANd both parties are lined up to take bribes to whittle away at any worrisome regulation which may be in place for the sole purpose of talking/false fight points today. Even the most liberal progressive dems in the House have all said.. they are abandoning SP U care for now. So only the bribes and the whittling will be at play... because no Democrat really expects/insists upon the right thing and they know it.

If that's what goes for liberalism, then Hell no, I am not a liberal!

Just as 95 plus percent of Democrats have either said nothing or cheered when their leaders promote sayings/actions like "humanitarian bombing". Their uttering of the words single payer or universal care now should be met with outrage by sincere humanitarians. And you simply cannot be a humanitarian inside either criminal party today. But you can abuse the heck out of the words.

To my personal knowledge, "Max's wife," otherwise known as the Hon. Ellen Brantley, Circuit Judge, who could put Joe Burris's sorry ass in jail if he had the guts to stand up and disrespect her when she was on the bench in her court, has been a member of the Arkansas judiciary since before 1987, when all the judges came to Harrison for an October gathering. It happened that year to be my sorry fate to preside over the Boone-Newton local bar, and to be responsible for entertaining all the judges of Arkansas.

I remember that Ellen hiked Lost Valley. Don't remember that Max was there. We bypassed the dry county.

As with most Arkansas professionals, the Hon. Ellen Brantley is woefully underpaid. Unless Max is netting a quarter-mill a year from the Arkansas Times (which seems unlikely) they are not in the top 1% as a couple, though they might make top 5%.
I am shocked, shocked that Wal-Mart treated an employee (elderly or otherwise) unfairly. Of course nothing will come of it. I have a vision of a Smiley figure in a Wal-Mart smock walking into the fog with one of their political lapdogs saying 'this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship'. I shop there as little as possible and only for what I absolutely need and nothing else. The impulse shopping I save for Target and Kroger.

I did the LR-Memphis run a couple of weekends ago and got caught in both mentioned bottlenecks. I took the Hazen Brinkley route coming back, it's much much easier than the demo derby on I-40 plus I like the bridges over the Caddo and White Rivers on Hwy 70.

If you want to avoid the traffic/construction mess in Memphis, which starts just after you turn south on I-55 just past McLemore Ave. and goes all the way to Elvis Presley Blvd. and I-240, take the left exit at the I-40/I-55 split like you are going to Nashville and then go south on I-240. It will save you a gallon or two and a wasted half-hour on a Saturday afternoon.
