My county clerk sends me a voter registration ID. It has no photo and is free. I resnt having to show my driver's license photo, and this registration ID should be all I need. DL's and other photo ID's cost money which is equal to a poll tax in my opinion. I believe poll tax is no longer legal.

Sound Policy, I remember stories of government workers being told to tell people that the voter IDs weren't free. I think this also happened in Tennessee, if I'm not mistaken. And tippytom, I think the equivalent to your story would be if you were a TSA agent telling people they didn't need IDs.

My issue with requiring photo IDs is that they require a fee to obtain. Even free voter IDs surely require showing a birth certificate or other paperwork. And it's not just old folks born in Arizona who may not have them. My husband, after serving in the military, working for the federal government at various times, attaining several advanced degrees, and all the other usual stuff adults do, had to replace his lost birth certificate. From another state. At a cost of $50. Seems akin to a poll tax to me.
Thank you, mountaingirl. Love the Emerald Coast, but aint no place like home. Don't know if your niece was the subject of this, but very early in our stay, a plane few down the beach several times pulling a trailer that said, "Linda Will You Marry Me? Bill."

D 'ya reckon? Did see a couple of late afternoon beach weddings, which as you know are a frequent sight. Hope many happy years are ahead for your niece and her fella.

Sure know what you mean about those cool sea breezes. Never got over 88 while we were there. By the way, some folks here think there is no heaven. They're wrong. There is. I know. I've been there. Heaven is sitting under a beach umbrella all day long reading Louis L'Amour and sipping ice-cold vodka tonics. Oh yes it is!

NVR: Think I forgot to tell you. Saw "Bernie." Another great NVR movie call!

tippytom

"tippytom, roughly 1 out of 9 Americans don't have a government issued ID. When Wisconsin passed a so-called voter ID law, it required the state to provide free government issued IDs for voters who didn't have one. Guess what? The Rethuglicons in charge lied to people by telling them they would have to pay for an ID despite what the law said, thus discouraging folks who have a legal right to vote."

...therefore the issue is not that voters have to show a valid ID but that a garbage tactic was used to confuse voters. Again, once implemented those arguments would be moot.

To further that point, if I stand out in front of Clinton airport tomorrow, holding an official looking sign telling airline travelers they don't have to show ID to fly is the problem with the TSA screening process or does the problem lie with the act/crime/lie I've told? Seriously? It's not the TSA, so why discount the TSA process?

How can we expect the electorate to become any more educated about the issues and how those issues affect them if we totally discount their ability to understand right from wrong? You want someone to understand what the healthcare act means to them yet you discount their ability to know what's shit and what's shinola. if someone makes a comment like "i'm against obamacare" you're more than likely to tell them two things: 1)educate yourself and 2)explain to them why it's in their best interest because getting them to understand that IS in their best interest. But when you as a citizen decide you're against something rather than helping someone to understand (as in this case that obtaining an ID is free), you'd rather submarine the process because that's what your party has told you the party line will be.

You know, as a military veteran I have zero respect for a party that regularly does everything in its power to keep eligible voters from casting a ballot. Can you say Tim "Vote Cager' Griffin? Rethuglicons seem to think all is fair in war and elections in America. I strongly disagree.

CBB....we are getting by, but it sure isn't pretty.

Grapes are dyin daily. Pitiful sight. With a lot of luck we may be able to save some of the Chardonnay, but the Cab and the Cynthannia are pretty much a lost cause.

My pond is about 1/3 its normal size and I am working to keep my catfish, crappie, and perch alive. I ordered a nice fountain pond aerator from Michigan and got it installed last week, hoping it would keep oxygen in the water. But now it is tripping the breaker on the well pumps so I have an electrician coming tomorrow to explore the possibility of running another line and putting in another meter, designated for the pond and cabin. I have a dozer crew coming next week to double the size of the pond and dig out some deep areas so when this hot dry stretch happens again, the fish can seek refuge in cooler deeper water. The 5' of water I have left feels like bath water right now.

Do you have plenty of water for your sheep? So sorry about the fires in your area. That is frightening, especially when we hear about so many being caused yesterday by firecrackers.

Those meals you have been describing are very appetizing. You eat well at the CBB place!

Because we are getting by, I feel fortunate. I know we are better off than a lot of folks around here with chicken houses and cattle. Those are the people with real problems. City water supplies are getting short and folks I talked to today are worried about rationing.

My husband mentioned tongiht that he is missing those nice cool summer evenings we had when we lived on the beach in Florioda. Who ever thought we would be daydreaming of the cooler weather in Florida?

Watching the forecast tonight, there seems to be some hope on the horizon.......I saw cooler temps and some rain coming our way.

And to top it off, my husband's assignment may be in Amsterdam next week. I have an invitationto go but I can't leave this place until we get a serious break in the heat and lack of rain. He always sends great pictures since that is about as close as I can get these days to somewhere interesting outside Yell County!

Think I will change my avatar to a snow scene and entertain thoughts about spending Christmas in New York City again this year. The cold sounds perfect! Should keep me occupied until I have to head back outside and do it all over again in the morning.

Sending wishes for water and cool temps to all of the blog friends!

Why are Southern cops always wanting to arrest famous people? Do they think they will get 15 minutes of fame by doing so? Or do they just hate anyone who is not like them? (You don't need to answer that rhetorical question; I think I already know the answer.)

tippy, when there is no real fraud in actual voting since registering usually takes care of that why have a bunch of restrictions on what one needs to show at the polling place unless you want to disenfranchise voters based on certain demographics?

Show me where there is real VOTER fraud and I might listen. Otherwise, this is just another Republican effort to ensure that they win despite their war on the middle and lower classes.

If you are making less than $300k a year and you vote Republican, then you are voting against your own interests. But then I bet the idea of a socialist, commie, liberal, facist Kenyan as president scares the hell out of you. Whoa, I forgot MOOOOOOSLIM!

But that's how your party plays the game. Make up shit and scare the hell out of the ignorant.

Saline, we have been waiting for 6 months for anyone to identify voter cheating and all we have so far are two Republican 2012 primaries-Iowa and Maine. In one, they lost the votes from three counties and in the other, half their delegates were given the wrong date.

I have to admit-when Republican cheat, they don't waste the time on a single vote. For the last 3 elections, it has been voting machines that don't have written records. I guess it is the Dillinger thing with you Republicans-if you steal, steal big, not just one vote at a time. And with the current group of crooks running, I am surprised that anyone gets more than 10 votes (friends, relatives, and of course, Saline).
