http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darryl_S._Ina…
Quotes from Darryl Inaba
Pharm.D. Director of the Haight-Ashbury Detoxification, Rehabilitation, and Aftercare Clinic / CNS / 20040115

"Marijuana is a substance that contains up to 360 active brain chemicals in every variety a person smokes. We found that just one of those chemicals, Delta-9 THC, thought to be the most potent and causing the greatest amount of brain effects, is altered by the liver.

The liver tries to destroy this drug and get rid of it but in the process, it actually creates 60 or more new drugs that are active in the brain. So marijuana is a multitude of drugs."
"There is marijuana growing everywhere with a very high potency of 14-20% THC. To fully understand importance of this, we must realize that people who smoked in the 1960s thought marijuana was a benign drug.

Smoking one joint today is the equivalent of smoking about 14 of those joints from the '60s. Thus, we have a much greater concern about the health consequences of today's marijuana."

"The big problem we see at the Haight-Ashbury Clinic is that the potent form of marijuana today is causing a lot more problems than we saw in the 1960s. I never treated a single self-admitted marijuana addict in the Clinic from the early '60s through the mid-'80s.

However, by the late-1980s we started seeing people coming in saying, "Help me. I want to stop smoking pot. It is causing me to have memory problems. Causing me to be too spaced out. Not to function in my work. I can't complete tasks. It's causing me to be sick in the morning and cough. I have withdrawal symptoms. I want to stop and I can't stop."

We now have at our program in San Francisco about 100 new patients every month who are in treatment specifically for marijuana addiction."
All of the slang names for the various strains of marijuana are already registed trademarks owned by the top tobacco companies, just waiting for legalization to commence. The largest studies done by the government on marijuana were done right here in Arkansas at the NCTR facilities near Pine Bluff back in the 1980's. Why not send a reporter down there Max to see if anyone involved is still around & let us know the results? It might be especially timely between now and November!

I would vote to legalize marijuana, period. It is not near as dangerous as alcohol. I have never used marijuana in my life, but I have prosecuted a lot of people who have. I have never prosecuted anyone who beat the shit out of his wife because he was stoned on marijuana. In almost every case I have had of domestic battery, alcohol has been the reason. To me, alcohol is much more dangerous than pot. Is marijuana a gateway drug? Not likely. Most marijuana smokers never go beyond pot. Legalize it, license it, and make as much money off of it as the state does alcohol. Can you just see the American Tobacco Company getting into the pot business?

Yes that farm supplied our lab's drugs in the 1980s.

There are tons of results of well done studies (you may just not like some of the results, LOL). Look at NIH or OIH databases.

One derivative, Marinol, was released in the mid 1980's and was later re-classified by the FDA to Class III to make it easier to prescribe. You can ask your doctor to prescribe it tomorrow (but it doesn't retain a lot of pyschoactive effects)

The FDA still struggles with the inherent safety issues related to it's most common form of administration. A drug that is intended to be burned and inhaled faces an uphill battle.

Don't get me wrong. Legalizing all recreational drugs has a certain merit. Marijuana isn't likely to kill you.

I will share my West Coast experience, the majority (don't tell me about your Aunt Hanna) of folks who use marijuana for nausea, MS, weight control, depression, TMJ, PMS, CFS, etc were frequent recreational users before they gained access via legal channels.
CBB - The fact that there is a federal marijuana farm outside Oxford, Mississippi does NOT mean the government knows it works. It simply means that in order to do research, you have to have a standardized form and dose of the drug. (I didn't know they did the pills too, just knew about the joints). I mean it just doesn't work to say, "Hey, go out and buy another couple of lids for the rest of the study"

Yes, it is clear that marijuana has medicinal benefits. The question is whether it is "better" than other modalities. And at some point those studies include whether more restrictions would be needed with marijuana than drugs such as phenergan, Reglan, or Zofran. And yes, it is hard to get NHI grants to study marijuana and industry support is non existent.
Wasn't there a petition drive to take the Conservation Sales Tax (1/8th of 1 percent) away from the Game and Fish Commission? Fellow named Jimmy White, I believe, was the driving force. He lives at Manila, the area where local duck hunters are mad about private blinds in state management areas being phased out.

Glaucoma Research Foundation is an industry-supported group with a number of high-priced patented products that could be negatively impacted so they aren't exasctly an honest broker on this. No one is actually pushing too hard for glaucoma anyway. Cancer is the big one and guess what, there are MJ tablets that come from the FDA-owned MJ farm in Mississippi (yes, Mississippi!) that have been made available to cancer patients. Why does the FDA grow MJ is there is no need for it?

My vote-Yes on Ethics (now that would be a positive change for the AR elected officials), yes on MJ, no on casinos, yes on the severance tax (if you vote "no" on this, than shut up about the conditions of your county roads), and right now, no on the road tax because of the sneaky way that the truckers got out of their diesel tax increase. The truckers do far more damage than all of the cars on the road today.

The proposed oad tax doesn't come close to paying for the identified work presently known but I have watched them screw up the 107/36 intersection over the past 6 months or so, solving a problem that only existed in their small minds. They have now put a stop sign and sharp right turn on the main traffic road between two county seats while giving priority to a small local road. If this is how they work out priorities (over the protests of the local residents), they have way too many people, too many vehicles, and too much money already.
