I'm not Columbo and I will admit I'm always on the lookout for racist behavior, but from this tape, there's no evidence I can see that a rogue cop was looking to put another notch on his gun. Who knows what happened, but the evidence points to Carter acting alone in the backseat of the patrol car.

Maybe it was suicide or maybe the gun went off by accident when he found it in his pants or stuck in the backseat? Too many black men die at the hands of the cops, but doesn't look like that was the case here.

But I also don't want to be Bill Frist diagnosing a brain dead girl in Florida via video tape.

Reasonable people will eventually know what happened, although there are some who will never let facts get in the way of their preconceived ideas. Admitting no inside knowledge of the situation, it nevertheless seems to me a more reasonable explanation is that the young man shot himself which is not the equivalent of suicide. Initial reports of "suicide" really didn't make much sense. A more plausible explanation to me is that he found the gun in the back seat ((possibly left by a previous arrestee), was trying to get it out of the seat, and it accidentally discharged. I doubt if his mind had come up with a plan once he got a weapon into his hands; perhaps he thought he could shoot his way out of the situation, but that does not seem very rational either. We probably will never know exactly what he was thinking.

". . . officers took Carter out of the patrol car, placed him under arrest, searched him, handcuffed his hands behind his back, and then locked him inside with the vehicle's windows tightly closed. Several witnesses observed it all." ~ Gene Lyons

SEVERAL WITNESSES OBSERVED IT ALL.

In addition to the dashcam footage released earlier, the ArkD-G this morning posted telephone and video interviews of two witnesses, Casper Gibson and Jamie Anderson, who described what they saw while standing just a few feet away from the patrol car in which Chavis Carter was shot. I listened closely to those two interviews and encourage others to do the same.

http://www.arkansasonline.com/videos/2012/…

Both witnesses (interviewed hours apart) said it was they who were responsible for calling the police and that they saw everything from beginning to end. Both said the officers placed Chavis Carter in the back seat of the patrol car and closed the doors (as Lyons notes above, from the police report).

Both Gipson and Ms. Anderson said the police officers were standing outside of and several feet away from the closed-door patrol car talking to each other when they (Gipson and Ms. Anderson) heard a pop that apparently was the gunshot that killed Carter. Ms. Anderson is quite sure that the pop she heard was a gunshot.

Despite the protests and conjecture to the contrary, witnesses Gibson and Anderson appear to be certain that the Jonesboro police officers did not shoot and kill Chavis Carter. It will be interesting to see how much investigative weight is given to their accounts.
Can't speak definitvely on this because I am not a sound technician, only minor exposure to audio technology, but I'll mention this so someone more qualified may be led to address the issue: The sound of a gunshot may or may not sound like a gunshot, the way we hear them in TV shows.

Some microphones have some kind of device that protects their fragile diaphragm from being overwhelmed, and damaged. It may not still be true, as I'm not up on the technology, but years ago special microphones were required to record close gunshots and cannon--as in recording the cannons frequently used in the "Eighteen Twelve Overture."

Thus, the microphone in the police car MAY have blocked some of the vibrations to protect the diaphragm, and therefore distorted the sound of the gunshot.

Let's hear from one of our sound engineers.
