Well, that's the meaning if you take it literally.

The thing is, I didn't mean it literally.

Actually, this is a tongue-in-cheek expression I picked up from a friend nearly sixty years ago; and he didn't really mean it literally either--it's just an expression.

Sky, that is a lot more cynicism than I have come to expect from you.

cbb, I am relieved to know that the money drain from Arkansas was only two million.

I am listening to a debate between Dan Savage, gay married man, parent and a really good spokesman for GLBT people and Dan Brown, head of the National Organization of (for?) Marriage.

http://www.balloon-juice.com/2012/08/23/di…

There are so many holes in Brown's arguments. Savage, who is Catholic, knows his scripture very well. Brown cites Orthodox Jews as a group that takes literally the Old Testament laws. Last I checked, Orthodox Jews were not stoning adulterers or forcing girls to marry their rapists or marrying their brother's widow. Well, maybe that last one happens, but not if the living brother is already married. Orthodox women do make sure their elbows are covered and they are wearing a hat, at least, when they leave the house. Some of the one's I knew in L.A. also did the ritual bath thingy.

Totally irrelevant aside: From this old hetero lady's viewpoint, Savage is definitely hotter and manlier looking.

Verla, CNN is reporting that the Romney soiree raised about $2 million or what Stephens spends to build a high school so his kids or grandkids won't have to associate with the "other". They say there were about 100 people at the dinner and reception at $50,000/couple but I guess that Stephens covered all the costs of his over-priced private hotel. He gets it at wholesale.

The Rmoney campaign is sorta huffy because the networks are snubbing Ann by not broadcasting her Monday night sermon, spiel, rant (take your pick). "Us people" who are waiting with bated breath for her words of wisdom can catch them on PBS or CSPAN.
This seems like another screw-up from a spectacularly incompetent staff.
NB, you are most definitely the id. Norma Bates is our super ego here at ATblog. I think that AR needs the higher consciousness that she brings to our discussions.

Norma, I wish that Akin was an outlier in the Repub party. Unfortunately he is the median. Or is he the mean? Statistics is HARD. At any rate there's this from the wiki page about us.

"... it is ill-advised to ignore the presence of outliers. Outliers that cannot be readily explained demand special attention"

As for the Darlene who is hoping to pick up some extra change, my knowledge of Tampa titty-bars is limited to this one NY Times story.

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2012/08/20…

The king of Tampa adult entertainment thinks the convention is going to be too Mormonish to be good for business and he's going to be in Vegas for a different convention next week.

"Other strip club owners in Tampa are more optimistic than Lange about seeing more customers; 2001 Odyssey's Kleinhans said he's put in a VIP area for the RNC, complete with a private entrance around the side of the club, so anyone who wants to sneak in unannounced can do so. Redner refuses to do that for his customers. "I can't play to that part of human nature," sniffs Redner. "If you gotta hide from what you're doing, you shouldn't be doing it."

Tampa sounds like a nightmare. What was the site selection committee thinking when they picked that spot at the peak of the hurricane season? Alex Reed and thousands of other Republican delegates will be trapped in the Tampa-Dome, trying to watch Romney's acceptance speech by candlelight as Cat-5 Hurricane Isaac roars outside. The delegates will be begging FEMA and the White House to send the National Guard with bottled water, but Obama will refuse because he's too busy rehearsing his acceptance speech for the Charlotte convention. It could get ugly.

Politicians got bought (literally) on the idea of privatizing public services. Seldom has the transition of public ownership of services to private resulted in lower costs in the long run, ... unless the quality of service declined.

As many cities and counties face bankruptcy and short-sighted anti-tax attacks, the allure of divesting themselves of seemingly costly services and getting infusions of cash seems irresistible. On the front end, the unit of government may receive some initial benefit. As this article from Alternet.org shows, there are numerous downsides:
http://bit.ly/PDENFs

Corporations swoop in when the governments are most vulnerable and make offers too good to be believed. And, then, after the ink has dried, they proceed Bain-like to squeeze every ounce of profit out of the service.

That is the key in the fallacy of "private can do it cheaper" - profit. Where is the profit - that government never collected or needed - coming from to make it worthwhile for the owners? Reduced services? Poorer quality? Make services unavailable for costly clients? Ever-increasing fees? Lose employees' pay, benefits, and safety?

A new report outlines the threat of the current push to grab up water and sewer systems:

"Investment bankers and other major financial players are increasingly interested in taking control of water and sewer services across the United States. Private equity vehicles are armed with more than $100 billion for infrastructure worldwide. Although most deals in the U.S. water utility market have involved existing private sector companies, a number of fund managers anticipate that the ongoing fiscal crisis will drive some governments to privatize their water infrastructure. To make that prediction a reality, major financial interests are backing various government proposals that facilitate privatization and private financing of public infrastructure."
http://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/reports/p…
http://bit.ly/R1Xd1f

Is it happening in Arkansas? Perhaps Lindsey, Max and the rest of the AT newshounds can sniff it out.

Along with the hurricane, I'm pretty sure the wingularity will hit Tampa next week. For the uninitiated the wingularity is defined thus:

"the point at which the insanity from the far right and those controlling the Republican Party [continues] to grow exponentially until it reaches an unsustainable weight and collapses upon itself. This is also known as the Purity Spiral, wherein the density of wingnut increases compared to mainstream conservatives to the point of pure wingnut. As the ratio rises, this creates a phenomenon wherein no logic or sanity can penetrate or escape. When rightwing argument has become completely inaccessible to the uninitiated, it has reached the Wingularity."
