I could drink three gin (no vodka for me) and tonics a night guys. I don't know if I should though. Could I just drink the quinine or tonic water?

You can use gin as a weed killer too. If you will notice the cedars---as they are called around here, but they are really junipers---have very little vegetation growing beneath them. I had a recipe once for gin-weed killer, but it seemed a waste of gin to me.

If you don't believe me that they are junipers and NOT cedars, crush and sniff some of the blue berries they produce---they smell just like gin.

Also I'm thinking Mrs. Hodge may be staying behind to sell their home. I don't know what part of Brooklyn they live in. I don't know if they could afford a brownstone in Park Slope or Brooklyn Heights at today's prices. And he's certainly not going to be able to maintain such a place if he owns one on the OA salary. Maybe the Mrs. has a high-powered career. If she does, I certainly understand her not wanting to give it up and I say good on her.

The curative power of quinine water, Outlier, was discovered by the British when they built their colony in India in the 1800s. They took their quinine water with gin, but it helped them avoid the malaria and other insect borne diseases of India as they attempted to bring civilization to the "heathens," and solidified their empire in the process. . It's funny how alcohol and disease control have such a symbiotic relationship; kinda like medical marijuana and cancer. Which brings me to the point. You need to listen to Durango. He knows of which he writes, and he wouldn't steer you wrong--I don't think.

Outlier, I reckon maybe I need to come up air to Burrvul and learn you my northwest Arkansas survival course. Them ticks and chiggers? You need fret and suffer no longer, young lady. The problem is that you ain’t a drinkin’ enough vodka tonics — America’s best libation for good health.

Y'see, the quinine water in the tonic will make them chiggers and ticks run from you the minute they touch yer skin. And faster than a wind-blown wildfire, ‘cause they hate the very thought of quinine. My Rx for you: Three (3) VTs a day. Two before supper and one at bedtime. You’ll be a new woman. (And you’ll sleep better, too.)
She needs to ask me about chiggers and ticks before she makes a move. I don't remember them being anything like they are today and I was outdoors, in the grass, in the trees in Arkansas, Mississippi, Kansas, and Oklahoma. I went camping, fishing, hiking and I never had a tick. My major problem was sunburn.

Well, good for the Oxford American, publisher Sabin, and Roger Hodge whose professional credentials are impressive (we can forgive him for being born in Texas, he can’t help that).

We very much enjoy the OA here at Casa de Durango. Always have. And wish nothing but the best for it and its new editor. Do hope the mag’s relationship with UCA continues. Believe the partnership is important to both.

PS: Outlier — With regard to the possibility of culture shock, it appears that Don Bacigalupi, executive director of Crystal Bridges, has handled it nicely. As have so many others. Y’know, like one of my favorite posters here — a former California gal known in these here parts as “the outlier.”
