There is also the possibility that sales figures dropped precipitously after the initial eat-in. The fickle supporters failed to follow through with their publicized commitment. Facing brisk competition from other greasy spork sellers of dead animals and a boycott, the franchise owners likely prevailed on the corporate office to mend its wicked ways. It's the money, not the conversion of a bigot, that won in this case.

Chick-fil-A's response is national in scope, not related only to the Chicago siting decision. We may learn it's less than it appears. But if it is at it appears, the circumstantial evidence suggests Chick-fil-A decided it wasn't good for business to be identified as a symbol of opposition to equality, its logo the Confederate flag for oppression of gay people. THAT is the point. And it took no suppression of free speech -- indeed, only after robust expression of it from all directions did it come to this pass.

Exactly. NO one is arguing for discrimination. As a private citizen the alderman may say or do anything he wishes. As a government official he must represent all citizens equally no matter how much he may disagree with their opinions or actions. To do anything less is Mark Martin territory. Partisanship in politics is one thing, in govt operations it is something different altogether.

We've been through these battles about free speech, religious belief, and the "right" to discriminate in my own lifetime. I well remember a time when a large percentage of the citizens of Arkansas believed in the "right" of Caucasians to discriminate against people of color because "religious freedom" mandates that they engage in this discrimination.

The bible tells us so was the fundamental argument I heard over and over again, growing up as a boy in Arkansas, about why white folks should have the "right" to practice discrimination against black folks.

Fast forward a half century, and you'd be hard pressed to find large numbers of people willing to voice openly those "religious" ideas (though they're still held in private). Or to defend the "right" of people to practice racial discrimination on the grounds of "religious freedom."

Just as you'd be hard pressed to find a large percentage of people who would argue that the government has no business restricting the right of groups to practice racial discrimination--even if they do believe that the bible tells them so. This was precisely what the case of Bob Jones v. U.S. was about--a case in which the Supreme Court, under a GOP president, Ronald Reagan, instructed Bob Jones Univ. to stop practicing discrimination, no matter what the school believed about the bible, or forego federal funding.

The notion that racial discrimination is intolerable and the government has a hand in assuring that it cease was once considered impossibly "leftist."

i wonder on what credible ground folks who now argue that discrimination against gays, because the bible tells me so, is a case apart from the case of race build their argument. When there are such self-evident parallels between the cases of racial discrimination and discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation.

People were just as convinced in 1950 that the bible tells them they must draw discriminatory lines between white skin and black skin as many folks are now convinced (in places like Arkansas, where it's still 1950) that the bible tells them they must draw discriminatory lines between straight folks and gay ones. And they're just as wrong about the latter conviction as they were about the former one.
The denial of rights is if a mayor or alderman (gov't official) bases a zoning decision on the owner's religion or lack there of.

I do have a problem with gov't restraining speech.

We fault the Libyans and Egyptions for not knowing the difference between someone in America making a silly movie or the GOV'T making an offensive movie.

The Arab Spring countries are 6 months into developing rules and laws and we don't cut them slack when they get it all wrong.

We have had 200 plus years and people can't seem to understand the freedom of speech is in respect to gov't not infringing but other citizens don't have to listen AND they are free to shout back or boycott you.

      What Norma and Outlier said.

Imagine a political figure trying to "effect" a business's decision. In the U.S. of A., at that!

Nobody's free speech has been throttled in the Chik-fil-A situation, Full Throttle.

The owners of this business have had perfect liberty to make their views known.

Just as those who oppose their bigotry have every right to make our views known.

When businesses whose bottom line is profit, after all, find out that there's a price to be paid for voicing bigotry, it's absurd for them or anyone else to claim they've been denied free speech.

Boycotts are one thing, freedom of assembly is good, using the power of your political position to effect a business decision is one step too far. This is what makes the left equal with the idiots on the right. I've never voted republican. It would be hard to fine one to vote for. But, some of this leftist nonsense deserves a good opposition party.

@Full Throttle: "Good chicken and free speech are sacred in this country."

And money also talks.

No one's free speech has been in any way infringed in this saga.

People have used their money both to voice support for Chik-fil-A and vice versa. It appears that the food chain may have recognized that, as a business, it behooves them not to alienate large numbers of people who use their right of free speech to voice discontent with bigotry.
