Couldn't Be Better and TX-Traveler, thanks for your responses. You make a valuable point, it seems to me, TX: the Public Religion Research Institute study seems to compare people without college degrees across the nation, without looking (as far as I can see) at the quality of education that demographic receives up to the college level region by region.

If I am understanding your point correctly, a high-school diploma in one part of the nation may well represent a different level of education than a high-school diploma in another point of the country. And I think that's correct. I also doubt that the PRRI study factors that discrepancy into its report.

I do also think that the way religion plays out in the South, the way it imbues our culture--and the way in which it is distinctively different in much of the South--is an important explanatory factor here. And, of course, religion and education interact in our region. A person only has to look at the attempt of some religious groups to control the curricula of even public schools when it comes to matters like teaching evolution to see that.

Were he to be elected Romney is going to back pedal like there's no tomorrow on all his Rwing proclamations. He would likely tweak Affordable Health Care but not change the premise. I've never been able to wrap my mind around the idea that there are enough people in the US who believe in such a minor figure as Mike Huckabee that it allows him to become rich and still richer no matter what stupid thing he says. Except for the gift of bullshit, Huckabee is a very average man. He looks like your plumber. He's not very truthful. He's been digging for money since his days playing on his grandmother's mythical dirt floor.

Huckbee has no great political accomplishments other than being on the Arkansas tit for 12 years. We now know in the early years he was also getting under the table money from Big Tobacco to spy on Hillary Clinton. What other under the table money did he take or is taking now? How can enough people believe in him to keep Janet farting thru silk all these years later?

If we don't keep a lid on our religionists in 20 years Baptists will be beheading and stoning people, wearing dynamite on their chests and killing Ambassadors when some minor thing pisses them off. Our future can been seen in last week's film clips from Libya if we're not careful. People who live in fantasy are the most dangerous people on earth. And Huck is always there scooping up their cash that would better be spent on the education of the offspring of these sheeple.

However, as bad as Huck is, John Boozman is worse. From his seat-warming position in the Senate Boozman has the power to make life worse for us in the 99-47% and he showed us that yesterday when he joined 3 other Senate nobodies in defeating the bipartisan job corp bill for returning veterans of our senseless wars. Tyson just got some more bloody chicken plant workers because someone used John Boozman's voting hand to stop a good helpful bill for those we pretend are the greatest of the newer generation.

Our abused military should go out on strike over Boozman's bad vote. Our veterans should be standing outside of Boozman's offices throwing rocks and screaming threats today. But like he aways does, Boozman will get a pass because the rest of the time he doesn't really matter to anyone. A chicken fried steak and a good night's sleep will fix him up and he'll be back to daydreaming about cattle in his Senate seat tomorrow. A Hitler? No. A jackbooted SS officer? No. A little used tool to use in rotation to stop good things for good people? YES!

W.D.L - I agree in whole with what you say regarding the influence and type of religion on molding a person's view of the world. However, I would like to argue that education is much more of an influence than you think. First, education in the south since the time of the civil war was not equal. Following desegration education was not equal and even today I bet you a dollar to a donut that many of smaller and poorer school districts cannot come near to matching those of the richer and more influential districts. I would also argue that the effect of education on those who are the proponents of religion, the leaders who very much influence their followers in many ways have a lack of a world view, are insular, are intolerant and have a respect for only one reference source on which to base their life. That has I believe, led to a never ending cycle of what you describe. Couple the effect of religion and lack of education with economic disparity or lack of opportunity and for me it becomes easy to see and understand.

To add to your argument I think there is a really ugly side of religion where it is used to gain political power, to implement a religious social agenda or to make millions. Frankly if Huckabee had not been a preacher, I don't think he could have ever been elected governor. Again I would argue that education can help someone recognize what goes on in the world and most importantly provide the ability to have a logical understanding about what people say and what they really mean. I also realize that having an education does not necessarily change one's view of the world. That statement in and of itself begs the question is that person educated? But (snark) as Lawrence O'Donnell said about mittens last night, one cannot cure stupidity.
Without giving the Huck link a click, because to me he's usually an idiot only interested in cashing in. I will say, yes, absolutely he should say whatever he wants about Islam or muslims or anything else. He should always be considered a bad comic, looking for another buck. But that is the price of free speech. I don't think we should censor ourselves or others out of fear as so many appear willing and eager to do. By all means condemn him for what he says, but don't whittle away at an already weakened liberty. The radical Hucks and radical Mohammed's deserve each other. Want to reduce radial Muslims a great deal... quite invading, occupying and murdering them all over the world. Even American so-called liberals wont insist upon ending this... so, very few libs have any credibility when they sneer at the Hucks, imo.

I'm far more concerned about suppression of speech and information in our country on so many levels... we watched with OWS over the last year, outside political conventions this summer... and the vast amount of secrecy granted by government. The way the press only covers major party candidates with 'quote approval', th NSA letter, patriot act and so on. If what remaining ability I have to say these things means the Hucks can spew their distractions, so be it.

What I find interesting is that on today's Yahoo front page the reason given for their vote against the bill was made because of a lack of funding with no mention of their participation in writing the bill; that part of it was, as Maddow noted a bipartisan effort with the democrats. If funding was an issue why participate in writing the bill? Both Murphy and Maddow agreed that it was nothing but a charade on Boozeman and the other's part to simply stiff the President & the Democratic members of the senate. And most importantly screw the vets.
I’m still "reviewing” (with disdain) Echols’ blasting of Jason Baldwin, the man to whom Echols owes his freedom. Doubt I’ll bother with Echols’ book.

I think Mike knows his base well. He's made quite a career out of pandering to the base (base, baser, basest).

Re: that base: there's a fascinating new report by the Public Religion Research Institute entitled "Beyond Guns and God: Understanding the Complexities of the White Working Class in America." The survey is here: http://publicreligion.org/research/2012/09…. The report defines "working-class" as "non-Hispanic white Americans without a four-year college degree who hold non-salaried jobs."

A key finding: Southerners are different. Southerners stand out. In mid-August, Romney was leading by 40 points among white working-class voters in the South. In other parts of the country, neither candidate had a commanding lead among working-class voters in the same time frame.

White working-class citizens are far more likely to live in households with firearms in the South than are their counterparts in other parts of the country.

There is far greater opposition to same-sex marriage among Southern white working-class folks than among white working-class Americans in other regions. While only 32% of white working-class Southerners favor permitting gay and lesbian people to marry, 44% do so in the Midwest, 47% in the West, and 57% in the Northeast.

"White working-class Americans in the West (40%), Midwest (48%), and Northeast (48%) are less likely than white working-class Americans in the South (58%) to believe that over the past few decades, the government has paid too much attention to the problems of blacks and other minorities."

I wonder what makes us so different in the South. The study is comparing people at the same educational level and with similar socioeconomic status. So the difference must be situated someplace else than in the area of education or socioeconomic status.

My guess: the significant difference between white Southerners and the rest of the country has everything in the world to do with the distinctive kind of religion that dominates in Southern culture. And with the racism that has historically been long embedded in that religious worldview--not to mention the male dominance and patriarchal values.

The world that Huckabee himself represents, knows very well, and has profited from . . . .

As for Dr. No--Rachel did not use that term, but she insisted that all of those four Republican senators had their own amendments in the law they voted against. Do the men have no shame? Is that the GOP of Lincoln, Gov. Rockefeller, Teddy Roosevelt and my greatgrandfather who was a member of the 10th Brigade? Again, talk about evolution.

Mike will never accept responsibility of any military deaths caused by demonstrations against whatever he does. No Republican ever takes responsibility for anything. They have never acknowledged that $11 trillion of the national debt was run up by Republicans IN GOOD TIMES when they should have been paying it down. There was some acknowledgement by keeping George W Bish, Dick Cheney, Rumsfield, and Powell locked in a closet for the duration of the GOTP convention. In their little bitty hearts, they are all Fonzie when it comes to m-m-m-i-i-s-s-t-t-a-a-k-k-e-e-e-s-s-.
