I wonder what ever happened to Gene Scott. Back in the 1980s, I used to tune him in occasionally. He always had a cigar in his hand, which he would stop and take a puff off of every now and then. You knew he didn't believe his own b---s--t, but he apparently made money anyway.

Look forward to hearing your review of PHG. We're hoping to check it out next time we're in town.

We talked about dining at the Packet House this very night, but decided to stay home and finish off the last of DSSW’s todiefer beef stroganoff. Will certainly give you a full review after we go, and that’ll be very soon.

Judging by the parking lot a couple nights this week, I’d say the PH is doing very well. Sure hope it’s a long-term success. As you well know, an ancient mansion overlooking the river is the perfect setting for an upscale restaurant.

Not hearing enough from you of late, HHW. Some of us need at least one “HHW fix” a day!

Jim, heard all that about Humbard and Bakker. My momma was a sucker for those cons.

I think Jimmy Swaggart broke her devout heart. My father went to a different church and was somewhat cynical about religion but joined in for the community service his small church did a few times a year for needy families. Momma simply sent in money to her favorite cons and played music for her local church.

Bakker and Humbard were both products of their times. Humbard had about four money counters working for him. The Bakkers employed about 25. Humbard hit radio just when radios were getting well dispersed around the nation, people had time to listen and trusted a voice of god on the radio.

Bakker hit TV when working class protestants began to accumulate some money ('66). Likely JFK's tax cut produced more prosperity for both Humbard and Bakker than we realize. TV had already spread to a majority of homes but the cash flow improvements were great and afforded all those working class prots to invest in Bakker's land schemes. Plus, Robertson had just begun mining the gold in TV broadcast and cable networks. Baker captured the power of TV persuasion but it was built up by a strong increase of incomes across the breadbasket of America and while conspicuous consumption began to rule the day after Reagan's Morning in America tax cut was done on the national credit card.

After his fall and release Bakker criticized prosperity gospel but not many listened. They're still going strong cause gettin something for little or nothing always finds an audience. Then there's always death-bed christians who seek one more way to redeem. Preachers really like those.

"Oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz."

Could be, plainjim, that part of the attraction was Humbard’s being a fellow Arkie who was born in Little Rock and was broadcasting on Hot Springs radio when he was 13. By the time he reached his mid-20s he was on national radio and we know the rest.
There was a jobs report today. Kind of a big deal. Unemployment is finally below 8%. The right wing immediately flew into a batshit spiral and started throwing out accusations that the numbers were cooked like Enrons books. Leader of the charge was Jack Welch, fascist mummy and former head of GE (We bring good things to life, and bad things to Chinese rivers). He went out on Twitter (really, a relic that tweets) and Fox to sound the call. Chris Matthews (a former employee) took a few swats at him in the afternoon on MSNBC.
It's hard to believe that it has been 23 years since Jim Bakker was convicted of fraud. I used to watch his show, not because of its content, but rather to watch him and Tammy Faye con the audience. He was a supreme con man. He probably should have been a lawyer. He could have worked his con without every being charged with a crime. What was amazing, though, is that even after he was charged, and convicted, the true believers never lost faith.

What kind of charisma can create this kind of blind loyalty, and adulation? To a lesser degree, wasn't Mike Huckabee a Jim Bakker? Jim Bakker was always asking for money; Mike Huckabee was also, albeit for different purposes--Bakker's for the glorification of the Lord; Mike's for political salvation. Where did the idea that money would buy you redemption come from anyway?

My father was a bigtime sinner most of his life, but in the last years of his time on earth he became a big fan of Rex Humbard (now deceased), a television evangelist. He watched his programs on TV regularly, and he sent Rex money, I guess in the hope that he could buy his way through the pearly gates. I understand how Jim Bakker could make the money that he did. What I can't understand is how someone who starts out with the idea of saving people, which Jim Bakker apparently did, according to accounts I have read of his life, ended up conning them out of their money.

Warwick wont agree to this and his new NY editor wont either. last thing they want is eidtorial board with pesky and disgruntled uca profs getting in their two pennies on editorial decicsions. no way this'll happen in the way its outlined right now. i doubt OA needs UCA anymore with all the private money coming in.

It's true Ark grows some ignorant Republicans, mean and racist, but we haven't
matched Minn's Bachmann or Missouri's Akin, just yet. I hope it's a while before we match this Repub Congressdude from Georgia who thinks embryology is like evolution, plus big bang theory, ""all lies straight from the pit of hell." He's moved Earth's age up to 9,000 yrs.
The review of Portis' work that was quoted by Max shows how most reviews are nothing but bullshit. Portis was not trying to establish any deeper truths;, or universal appreciation "for the sweep of history." He was just portraying people the way they are, which, in itself, is a pretty damn big accomplishment. Why the hell are literary critics, intellectual idiots that they are, always trying to make more of something than is there.

How do you think Obama is doing:
"I think he's got it the next four years wrapped up"

"We're in trouble economically. I don't think you can blame it all on one black man.
We spent 50 years gettin ourselves in trouble and it may take a long time to get
ourselves out of it."
