"Those negatives, Rogers said, have since been appraised at $18 million dollars."

Oh please. This is total self-promotion. The idea that these negatives are worth 18 million dollars is pure fantasy. There isn't an institution or museum anywhere that would pay that kind of money for negatives, let alone a collector. Does anyone actually believe Roger's pompous BS?

When the offices of The Sporting News were located in St. Louis, the glass plate negatives and acetate negatives taken by Charles Conlon--some 8000 images in all--were taken care of according to the highest archival standards. The negatives had been cleaned, and they were being stored in acid-neutral sleeves and boxes. Moreover, there was a catalog listing each image in many particulars. Furthermore, TSN had stopped making prints directly from the glass plates, for obvious reasons. The company had paid for a complete run of inter-positives and reproduction duplicates from which new prints were being made. That the Conlons were buried in a warehouse once the company moved to Charlotte speaks not very highly about how the current ownership cared for its resources. It's a great pity.

I think I enjoyed this article more than any other I've read in the Arkansas Times. From what I can tell the Fort Smith paper hauled their 100 year collection of photographs and negatives to the landfill in the late 1990s. I'm still sick about it.

While Mr. Rogers is digging around...keep an eye out for Fort Smith newspapers from the years 1859-1860-1861. With the exception of 4 or 5 issues on microfilm around the nation, all those papers appear to have been lost at the outbreak of the Civil War. It's a black hole for researchers.

What a fantastic story. I've heard of this John Rogers (there are several John Rogers in Arkansas) but reading a complete history of his beginnings and where he is currently, and his love for North Little Rock is fascinating. Thank you David.
