Is SCOTUS ready to nix the Voting Rights Act? How would that impact state Sen Bryan King's plans for Voter ID and other suppression tactics?

"A key pillar of American civil rights law is now in danger of being nullified by the Supreme Court.

Shelby County, Alabama, is seeking to have Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, the law that first guaranteed the right of blacks in the South to vote, declared unconstitutional. Section 5 forces areas of the country with a history of discrimination—mostly, but not entirely in the South—to ask the Department of Justice for its approval before making any changes to election rules. The DOJ is then supposed to ensure any changes protect Americans' voting rights. The law has a provision allowing jurisdictions to "bail out," but conservatives have repeatedly challeged the law as unconstitutional federal overreach that is no longer necessary because America has transcended its history of racial discrimination. The Supreme Court announced Friday that it would take up the case.

The last time conservatives challenged Section 5, in 2009, the Supreme Court handed down a very narrow 8-1 ruling (Clarence Thomas was the only dissenter) that did not declare the law unconstitutional. .....
Artificial Intelligence, thank you for your every astute evaluation of the average Arkansan. They have heard the Republican propaganda that no one has to be poor, and if they are, it's their own fault, so long that it has become a mantra. These are people whom you sit next to in church every Sunday morning, so convinced that they are good Christians. It is like the woman that the Blog posted about the other other day who "wanted her country back." Get that--"her country"-- and not the country of blacks, Hispanics, gays, lesbians and other minorities. How could someone have so much self-centered, egotistic concern? Next to Sky Pilot, I may be the oldest poster on this Blog. I don't pretend to be the most moral person in the world. I have admitted that I drink a little--sometimes a little too much-- but I would never presume to say that the United States of America is "my country," to the exclusion of all the millions of other Americans.

This is why the Republican Party has become the party of angry old white people. It is also why
they represent a dying viewpoint--and one that we should be glad the country is getting rid of.
Already, the Republicans are talking finally about immigration reform, after our President got something like 80 per cent of the non-Cuban Hispanic vote. An Hispanic candidate for the Rogers City Council made history by getting into a runoff with the 28-year incumbent.

As Bob Dylan said: "The times, they are a changing." It is going to be an exciting time. I hope I live long enough to see it play out.

I have been reflecting on the event of this week today in my quiet time. I am not a young man anymore, but I haven't slid into 'Kindly Older Gentleman' status either. This is the first Presidential election in my adulthood where I voted a straight Democratic ticket. There have been a few times in the past where I felt the Republican candidate for office was better than the Democratic candidate...not this year. Amongst my friends, I was vastly outnumbered. To say I was voting for President Obama was the easiest way to silence dinner conversation. And never in my life have I been surrounded by people who are totally incapable of grasping the fact that Americans fall through the cracks, that they become poor and impoverished through acts that are not their own making. I can not understand how middle-class-at-best people can be so quick to bestow even more power and priviledge to the few who rule the many.

Saline, the issue at hand is NOT a debt ceiling increase. It is the expiring Bush tax cuts which were extended 2 years in 2010 in exchange for more stimulus.

The question now is raising taxes on the 250,000+ income earners and maintaining the tax cuts for the middle class and the poor.

As Krugman said in his column today and linked earlier by me, this is not a fiscal cliff.
Wasn't the Clinton era tax rates that Obama wants partly what helped create a surplus?<<

Right on target Ron. Plus, there was a big economic factor of the dot.com and computer bubble. Clinton didn't start two wars, keep them "off-budget" and on the national credit card. When Obama put Bush's Two Wars back into the federal budget it didn't look so good.

"Off Budget" is another of the fantasy excuses and another example of why you never want Republicans in charge of a national economy.

That's something Saline Republican will NEVER address, Bush's Two Wars and keeping them "off budget," like we live in a make-believe economy.
Hmm. I think so. Proof that the solution is multi fold. Increase revenue, sensible gradual reductions and weeding out fraud, waste and abuse.

      >>Anyway, now that the Hillcrest liberals and their union buddies have succeeded in giving our Senate seat to John Boozman...< posted by stylus.

Been at politicking long stylus? Apparently not. It's called crossover voting. It's done to help select a candidate the challenging party wishes to oppose. In 2010 Boozman and company wanted to run against Blanche because she supported "Obamacare."
So, Republican primary voters suddenly became Demo primary voters, en masse, and scurried to primary polls to select Blanche over Bill Halter because they had a sneaky idea Halter could have given Boozman a run for his money, if not a whooping.

Check the voting history stylus. You will find more people voted in the Demo Primary held between three candidates than in the entire Republican primary which featured 8 US Senate candidates, all big names in Ark-Repub politics. Then the reverse happened in the general election. Repubs went home, en masse to support Boozman.

Crossover voting was done in Missouri Senate race in the recent election. Demos teamed up to promote Repub Akin's candidacy in the Missouri primary because that's who they wanted Sen Claire MacKasill(D) to run against. It worked, she won.
