I expect Republicans to elect their guy. Why wouldn't they? But they'll pay at least a tiny political price. The past is a bucket of ashes, as Lincoln biographer Carl Sandberg once wrote. The present is what counts. In Arkansas and Mississippi and similar, the Republican Party holds firm to the Southern strategy and evangelical guidance, while the majority of the country moves in the opposite direction. We have always been late to trends. We join one today as it is eroding. Short-term gains, long-term problems.
