I like to call today's deer hunting, "Mechanized Death". It is ridiculous!
Teams of people huddled in tree trunks, taking potshots at deer nibbling corn from a feeder. Set the feeder to dispense at 10 am and the hunter need only arrive around 9 AM for a good shot.
Today, its about who's 4-wheel drive truck or 4-wheeler can penetrate the wilderness deeper, faster, and get Johnny back to camp for booze and gin rummy the soonest after he shoots his tame deer.
To top it off, the Game and Fish Commission has created ridiculous rules to build a super herd of giant bucks, or something. You have to count the tines on the antlers and other bullshit before you shoot. I heard Wild Man Steve Wilson of Game and Fish on the radio the other day. He told a complaining hunter to just look through his binoculars! Jesus, the Indians didn't need binoculars, Daniel Boone didn't either.
I learned to hunt with iron sights on a rifle, a recurve bow without sights, and some good woods craft. Bunch'a pussies out there today and I'll be god-damned if I pay to join some yahoo club in the woods.

A night or two next week I’ll probably join some old boys at their deer camp down near Hamburg. Won’t be after a deer, though. What I’ll be hunting will be some of the best chili, steaks, catfish, and tall-tale-tellin’ a body can find in our small wonderful state. All of that plus some still-hot tins of tamales from Miss Rhoda’s will prove, yet again, that heaven really does exist.

Seriously! Up here the leaves are too orange... requiring hunter orange is enough to keep me out of the woods this fall. There is no way other hunters would be able to notice/differentiate - even in close range.

And I just can't make myself hunt while weather is still so warm. Late season bow hunting gets better with age.

I have no problem with hunters who actually eat what they kill. But the trophy hunters, especially the ones solely after the trophy, leaving a butchered carcass behind - I have no use for them.

If you don't need the meat in the freezer, stay home. Or if you go hunting anyway, make sure you donate the kill (and the money for processing) to any of the meat processors who will donate it to food pantries.

Max, our local paper prints pictures of small children sitting on the back of a truck, with a gun bigger than they are and a dead deer carcass across their laps. Disturbing for lots of reasons .

Hubby came home to take care of all things mountain while I'm in Florida. The 22 acres are clearly posted, the sheriff is on speed dial, and we have motion activated cameras now so I hope the hunters who had no problem the last few years coming on our property and killing baby deer will heed their more than fair warning.

Just something about a trespasser mowing down what you consider to be a pet in your own backyard that brings out the worst in a person.

Last year when three brothers were hunting across the road from my place, they were text messaging if they saw one heading toward another, letting them know which direction they would be coming from. Right now, 45 minutes after the start time, we have heard only 4 shots from east and south of us and there are no trucks parked on the road to my house which is very unusual as there are usually 2 or 3 but they may have taken a pass on the first day since the usual group also bow hunt and use muzzle
loaders. We will see if the 6 deer that come up to the cattle tank for water every evening show up tonight.
