Let us not forget about Lou Hardin, another politician who turned to academia.
Baker apply for tenure? You better believe he will.
Is it obvious yet that Conway is all about cronyism? You kiss mine and I'll kiss yours. Oddly this all this smooching and schmoozing is with taxpayers and others money.
Conway was a nice town not long ago. Sad how it's gone to the dogs. It is funny how the Republicans run on a less govt platform and Gilbert Baker is chasing after a govt check from any quasi-govt entity such as a university after receiving a govt check as a legislator. Don't forget that UCA was in a financial crunch from overspending their budget under Lou Hardin. Instead of tightening their belt and working thru their financial problems, Tom Courtway is needing a govt bailout and ironically seeks a so-called Republican Gilbert Baker to help the university get such funds. Question- Is Gilbert Baker really a Tea Party Republican that seeks fiscal responsiblity?

That would be the music department. I'm sure they will be happy to give him tenure, assuming he has evidence of multiple scholarly publications and a Ph.D. No? Tom and the Board can take care of that the same way they handled this job search in a completely transparent manner. Why does Courtway think a done-for member of the party that vows to slash public education to zero will be helpful in getting new funds for UCA?

"Courtway said Baker, who had tenure as a teacher at UCA, likely would apply for tenure again. But he said that was an academic matter, outside his purview, and would go through the normal procedure within the relevant department."

Within the relevant department? As an assistant to the president? Which department would that be? Courtway is taking Arkies for fools. Maybe he's right.

"Courtway said he had not advertised the job opening. He said advertising was the more typical practice, but it was not always necessary and "this was one of those times." He indicated he'd decided early on that because of Baker's support for UCA and knowledge of the institution that he was the right pick for the job and an application process would have been a waste of time. He said he'd started talking to Baker about the job during the summer and firmed it up four to six weeks ago."

You know Mr. Courtway, it's fine if you use your own money to hire a buddy for your own business without going through a competitive bid . *This is public money you are using.* In case I haven't been clear above, you Mr. Courtway totally lack even a semblance of ethics and integrity. This is bold-faced cronyism and should be illegal. Oh, poor Arkansas.

Thanks, Durango, for providing a touch of reality. Carl Whilloch was a lobbyist for years for the University of Arkansas. When David Pryor was elected Governor, he turned to Whilloch as his top assistant. This led to the Presidency of Arkansas State University, and the beginning of Arkansas State's rise. He later went on to serve as president of the electric cooperatives of Arkansas. Whilloch was a lawyer, though he never practiced law, not an academician, just as Thornton, and just as Courtway. As I said on another thread the other night. Anyone who thinks academia is any more pure or honorable than any other bidness is simply not living in our world. Although I don't like Baker's politics, his appointment makes a lot of sense.

"I made a good decision for UCA." ~ Tom Courtway

Undeniably true: A good decision for UCA. Because few things are more “political” than higher education and the state budget that funds much of it, including operations at UCA.

Bidness is bidness, folks. And legislative experience counts big-time in all aspects of the bidness that's conducted at the state Capitol.

Which, of course, is why former Oklahoma governor and U.S. Sen. David Boren is currently serving as president of the University of Oklahoma.

And why Arkansas State University and the University of Arkansas lined up former Arkansas Attorney General and U.S. Rep. Ray Thornton to lead their campuses years ago.

To say nothing of the fact that his experience in the Arkansas General Assembly is a chief reason Tom Courtway is president of UCA.

We don’t gotta like it, but that’s often the reality when it comes to education, money, and politics.
