I had just started a big pot of chili late last night when the power went off. (My days and nights are a bit skewed.) After about an hour, I had heard no trucks prowling the area so I decided to finish the chili on the side grill burner and hope power came on in time for me to put it in the fridge and freezer. Several barn cats made it up to the back porch to keep me company -- and see if there was anything they could mooch.
Success at about midnight -- chili done (with water added a couple of times), no flaming cats' tails and power people with spotlights walking the line through the woods to see if there was any more damage closer than they found on the highway. Twenty minutes later I had power and was waiting for the chili to cool a bit before putting most of it in freezer containers.
I plan to eat well now and then over the next few ... weeks?
Next project? A big pot of soup, I think. But I'll start it during the day. If necessary, it's a lot easier to cook outside when it's light.

Thanks mountaingirl. If you ever run across any sort of ham product from Burger's Smokehouse it's worth a try. The shanks are my favorite because they're just right for a pot of greens or a big pot of soup. It was a pleasant surprise awhile back when my daughter and I went shopping at her Conway Kroger and found them carrying it.

Highway 27's beauty is year round, but this year's fall colors have been particularly eye catching here, so I can just imagine. Russellville to Mt. Ida is a leg of a trip I've been making for more than 50 years. The landmarks along the way provide the comfortable familiarity that stands the test of time. I think there's something about the air.........

That's a lesson he learned, he would be the first to tell you, from programs like the CCC and WPA. This country gave him the opportunity to make a great life for himself and his family. So he did. Good one Durango. And Max and eL......you boys are making me hungry!

I flew back from Florida this afternoon and landed in LR just as the storms began. I was driving home from the airport on I40 as the hubby was driving the opposite direction back to the airport, headed to the Dominican.

I didn't think much could top the ocean view I had from my balcony on Miami Beach this week. But that was before I drove through rural Pulaski, Faulker, Pope and Yell counties this afternoon and saw some of the most beautiful colors I have ever seen. I doubt anyone could paint something so spectular and do it justice. I was definitely "driving while distracted", trying to take it all in, knowing this sight would be a fleeting thing and never look exactly as it did at that moment.

Between Dardanelle and Danville, the wind picked up and was blowing the beautifully colored leaves off of the trees and across highway 27 with such force it felt as though I was driving through a flock of manic tropical birds. Exciting and a little frightening all at the same time.

As I told my niece and her friend when I took them home, "It's always fun to go somewhere, but even more fun when you come back home."

And fond, happy memories of my yellow dog grandfather who went to extremes to overcome high blood pressure to be admitted into the army during WWII. A very wealthy, self-made man who wanted to be taxed more, not less, because it was the fair and right thing to do.

      “I am cooking a mess of okra that I bought yesterday . . .” ~ Max

“Had three hefty Farmer's market eggs for breakfast.” ~ eLwood

All this talk of buying groceries and cooking brings to mind this story:

Tiffany Jones, 23, a resident of Dallas, was visiting her in-laws and while there went to a nearby supermarket to pick up some groceries. Later, her husband noticed her sitting in her car in the driveway with the windows rolled up and with her eyes closed. Both of her hands were behind the back of her head.

Her husband became concerned and walked over to the car. He noticed that Tiffany’s eyes were now open and that she looked very peculiar. He asked through her closed window if she was okay. She replied weakly that she had been shot in the back of the head and had been holding her brains in her hands for over an hour.

Her husband called the paramedics who quickly arrived and broke into the car because the doors were locked. Once in the car, they found that Tiffany had a wad of bread dough on the back of her head.

A Pillsbury biscuit canister had exploded from the Texas heat, making a loud noise that sounded like a gunshot and causing the wad of dough to hit Tiffany in her head. When she reached back to find out what it was, she felt the dough and thought it was her brains.

Tiffany is a bleached blonde and a teabagger Republican who voted for Romney. But that could all be a coincidence. The defective biscuit canister was analyzed and the expiration date was found to be in October, 2000. Thus the explosion was determined to be Bill Clinton’s fault.

It's been a good, rainy day in Northwest Arkansas, but nothing violent. Hope it's the same in Parts Down South of us. I stayed away from the Sunday talk shows, and their endless analysis of what happened and how by Washington pundits. Back when I was a working newspaperman, we always used to say that the Washington Press Corps was about the worst there was. Movies which I have seen before are better than George Stepanouplis, and particularly George Will. Why does anyone pay him anymore?
