Outlier……as excellent assessment of the Celestine Prophecy. I try to read at least one book a week and several people had recommended it to me.

I had to force myself to finish it, but found it to be insulting for anyone with average intelligence. I thought it was condescending, and even caught myself laughing at the absurdity of it all.

And I would give the exact same review to that silly book “The Shack”.

Tbogg sums it up for you, radcen.
"Married CIA Director General Saint David Howell Petraeus had an affair with a third-string Bond girl named Broadwell who goes all “hands off my adulterous love-machine with the mad oral skillz, bitch” to another woman who also has ladywood for a man in a uniform, prompting lady number two to give the bitchagrams to a friend in the FBI (who has incidentally has a boner on for lady number two) who in turn gives them to his superiors, and then subsequently refuses to butt out because he’s still hoping for some post-chivalry nookie, and then the whole thing blows up right after President Obama steals the election from Mitt Romney with the help of women, browns, blahs, gays, youngs, hip urbanites, Jews, Catholics and Nate Silver who is A Wizard, A True Star."
In other news Ms. Broadwell is a fan of "The Celestine Prophecy".

No judgement is implied regarding her reading choices, it's just FYI. Redfield, who wrote "The Celestine Prophecy" is one of a very long line of people who are part of the human potential movement. Some have cashed in quite handsomely. Many friends recommended the book to me in the 1990's. I tried reading it, but it is so poorly written, full of grammatical errors, etc. that I didn't get very far.

The people who were touting this book to me also got on the bandwagon for Joel Osteen's "Your Best Life Now". FYI.

Washington Post - "The FBI probe into the sex scandal that led to the resignation of CIA director David Petraeus has expanded to ensnare Gen. John R. Allen, the commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced early Tuesday."

"According to a senior U.S. defense official, the FBI has uncovered between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of “potentially inappropriate” emails between Allen and Jill Kelley, a 37-year-old Tampa woman whose close friendship with Petraeus ultimately led to his downfall. Allen, a Marine, succeeded Petraeus as the top allied commander in Afghanistan in July 2011."

Durango, I saw "Steel Magnolias" and remember liking it---it had a power house cast. I read Ya-Ya Sisterhood and didn't like it at all so I skipped the movie. I couldn't relate to the mother/daughter angst/bullshit. I never had much angst to speak of with my own mom and not much to speak of with Hayden either.

Just got an email from my brother and he sent me this link to a picture of my step-grandfather's general store in Lamont, OK, or whats left of it. There was an awning on it in the old days and "Browning's" was painted on the brick facade above the windows. In the summer, there would be wooden benches out front where the old codgers would sit and talk. In the winter, Mr. Browning moved the benches inside and placed them around the old coal-burning, pot-bellied stove which was in the back third of the store, and the old men would come in there and sit for hours.

He closed the store in 1961. My grandmother died in 1959 and it was hard for him to run it by himself. When I was little, Mr. Browning had an old cat named Tom who would walk to the store every evening and wait for him at the store's back door and walk home with him. I guess Tom heard my grandmother making supper and knew it was time for the store to close.

It really was a general store like "Little House on the Prairie". He sold khakis, work clothes, yard goods, and all sorts of things---no fresh meat though. He just had cheeses and lunch meats like baloney and something I called "goose liver" that only my Dad and I liked.

If you read the first comment at the flickr site, the author talks about Mr. Browning humming all the time. When us kids were little, we could never figure out if he was humming a song or what. I wonder if it was a habit he picked up in France where he was an ambulance driver in WWI.
It's not & shouldn't be any of our business what is done in their private lives. It is the business of the affected partners and public scrutiny just makes it worse for the families & children causing angst & embarrassment to the innocent.
We need to grow up and cease pointing fingers like we're still in kindergarten.

Yes, crazy idea but do you know what's in ur stuff? Hydrogen, a valuable fuel and yields six hours per liter:
"Oh, this? Just some teenage girls from Africa who invented a urine-powered generator."
I gotta go with outlier on not quite knowing where the southern girls thing was coming from. Maybe, it's because, at times, we are them, though at least in my case not at all in their sense of style/fashion. If nothing else we know them. It wasn't near over the top enough to be pure camp. Without any offense at all on my part I think it might be a bit of male/female thing going on with how it's viewed.

The Petreus thing just keeps getting weirder. I'm starting to think Broadwell reminds me perhaps of Lisa Nowak, the astronaut who kidnapped the air force officer awhile back. It's just a different circle of players. And there's all kinds of politics involved. It may be best that Obama was out of the loop, which is a proverbial cluster mess.

Outlier, plainjim is spot-on. Couldn’t have said it better myself. Most of us guys (and gals, too, I suspect) love women like these with all our hearts.

I mean, what’s not to love about them? They’re cute, pretty, humorous, sincere, in touch with themselves, and tell it the way they see it.

In addition to plainjim’s recommendation that you see “Steel Magnolias,” I’d suggest you rent “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.” Great flicks, both of ‘em.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divine_Secret…)

Also, read some of the comments that follow the clip we’re discussing.

You cannot F around and think you are not going to get caught...now we have David Petraeus, by all accounts a brilliant man and soldier carrying on with a woman, sending e-mails and God knows what else via the internet...and he is the Director of the CIA...a very good example of the little head doing all the thinking.
How's that working out for ya David??

Outlier, I think it is a little bit of both. While recognizing that they are a little bit ridiculous, we still love them, because they do reduce things to their basics. Durango referenced "Steel Magnolias." Watch the movie, and you should understand Southern women--I think, although I am not too sure, having lived among then for all of my live, and having been married to two of them.

outlier - It kind of reminds me of John Edwards. His paramour approached him about doing documentary videos. Broadwell approached Petraeus to do a biography. This is how the more sophisticated political groupies can flatter the egos of their prospective conquests.
