Arkie, it is an addictive drug. Probably one of the most damaging out there. It has ruined many peoples lives. It is a huge tax maker. Pasta sauce is not really damaging.18 vs 21 is probably a more logical age for legal consumption since you can be shipped off to kill people at that age. I don't have enough time to go thru all other reasons but how you can compare the two items really escapes me. I am naive. Name me a state or a nation that does not regulate it. It a very dangerous substance. What is your point? Should valium not be regulated? If it was up to me it pot would be legal it is a much safer way to blow off steam. I think that is the main point of the substance. I just don't know where you are going. Google American Indians and Alcohol. Putin and Alcohol. It is dangerous go to an AA meeting.

There is no "Washington county cartel ". Springdale maybe , but it's family owned as are all of the neighborhood package stores in wet counties except for Sam's. You may save a pint of gas on your purchase of the three gallons of gas you burned to get to Costco instead of the store just 3 blocks away. When the cashier has to call the manager over to ring your product up you may want to evaluate your time savings as well. Our laws are not perfect. All of the states are different. Sure California has some more progressive laws but they do on most things. Costco and Trader Joes will be here when Ikea comes all while the tech park pumps up the income base. What you guys should be thinking about is why these big box guys can't get a bank thing going.Think if our banking services were less costly and Walmart had it's own home loan department. We are talking real savings when the bankers are worried about Walmart. There is no big corrupt machine in the alcohol world in Arkansas. it is really pretty tidy compared to most states. Why do you think the state runs some of them? Keep wishing for a small savings for less selection all while killing your neighbors livelihood like you did the Pharmacist that had the store in the same part of your neighborhood. You can have it. I will continue to shop, eat and live in Hillcrest.

Unfortunately, under Arkansas liquor laws, Macadoodles can not have another liquor store in Arkansas under that name. The father-in-law of Jim Phillips, who owns the Springdale Liquor Association, got that law passed after being assured that his nine stores would be grandfathered in. I assume, though, that we will have liquor stores based upon the Macadoodles model, which as everyone has pointed out, is a very successful one. I have made the trip to Springdale weekly since it opened. Crown Royal, Miller Lite, vodka, and Australian wines are usually on my shopping list, although not all at the same time. I don't want you all to think I am some kind of sot. Sometimes, I will splurge for Makers Mark, but I don't have the kind of money to pay $160.00 a bottle for whiskey.

He is loving exploring his new environs. He pretty much has covered the Sierras south of Tahoe and coastal areas south of Santa Cruz, but that leaves a whole lot still to explore.

Believe it or not, mountaingirl, there are crazier liquor laws in some states. In Idaho the state owns and runs the (hard)liquor stores. There are different rules for who can sell beer and wine. You can get wine or a before-dinner drink in all of the restaurants there as far as I know.
>> Macadoodles outfit... their huge new store on I-540 in Springdale, I'm ready to say you can do a LOT worse in Arkansas, on both price and selection.<<

AMEN. Finally a blog shout-out for my favorite liquor store. I make a trip once per month. Their gas prices are the lowest around too and for disabled farts like me, can't breathe the fumes, the attendant will pump your gas.

Dos XX beer prices are lower than Walmart. We used to travel to the state line to get bottles of Rothschild wine, produced and bottled in Chile, for $7 a bottle. Now it's $15 wherever you go and MacAdoodles has it regularly. For hard liquor their prices are $3-4 per bottle less than the local monopoly. But, I think Max will agree, you can get lost in their wine rooms, in Spdle or Anderson, Mo, just across the line.

The only booze place I've shopped with wider selections and lower prices are the stores in St. Louis. Can't recall the name but they were huge and competitive in the 70s and 80s.

When the hubby and I moved to Arkansas in '03 (originally home for me but not for him), I had a heck of a time trying to explain to him what a "dry" county was. He was especially intrigued by not being able to legally buy a botle of wine to take home and enjoy with dinner, but being able to go to a public "private" place and drink that same bottle of wine on their property, then drive home.
SELECTION:

Wonder if they’ve got Pappy Van Winkle's 20-year on the shelves. Gotta get on Colonial’s or Popatop’s waiting list to get it here in the Rock.

http://acorkabove.com/images/pappy20.jpg

PRICE:

Also wonder about Macadoodles’ price for Pappy’s. Sticker shock in LR: About $150 a bottle.

Not for everyday drinking ‘round here, but Lord it’s fine for special occasions.

Just ask the store owners in Oregon & Idaho how well it is working, not so much for the consumers in Washington state.

Here are some questions for Republicans: Why the hell is it any of the government's business if I want to open a store to sell a legal product? Why should liquor stores be regulated any different from other retail stores? Why should restaurants be treated differently if they want to sell a glass of wine with a meal as opposed to ice tea?

Our current liquor laws help to maintain a cartel and keep prices high. The Arkansas Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission should be terminated with extreme prejudice.
